Back From the Shadows Again....
(anybody remember that song from the Firesign Theatre "We're All Bozos on This Bus" album?)
It's been quite a stressful two months, but I think I've got things mostly sorted between moving the daughter to a new residence, finding tenants for our rental house, funeral (very distant relative I'd met only once), an emergency book editing job, contract illos, running an election (I'm an election judge and there's actually a bit of work to do for that), helping a friend (briefly) as they close their comic book store, and the usual round of daily life. There was more stuff in there, but thankfully it's all a blur now.
At the gym, my personal trainer left and I acquired another one, who actually was an assistant at a physical therapy center. I've written briefly about getting a trainer at a gym after my last round of physical therapy, and just this week I was delighted to discover that I can walk, pain free, like a normal person. My knees haven't magically gotten better (they're in such bad shape that the orthopedic surgeon I see thought I would probably be having shots in a few weeks) but this exercise has really made a big turn-around in my life. If you'd seen me two years ago at a convention, I was limping and using a cane. Today I can walk and move around moderate weights (20-30 pound boxes) easily.
In some ways I'm far healthier than I was when I was "downsized" in 2005. I still need to lose a bunch of weight, but that'll come this year.
But with the new expenses, I'm going to look for a part-time job; perhaps substitute teaching. I may abandon that later on (who knows) but for now it'll be better than working as a greeter at Walmart. While I wish I could make a living off my art and writing, it's clear that this isn't possible at the moment. I'm not going to quit doing art, but I do need to think about bills (which, if you wondered why you didn't see more of my art or me promoting myself... it's the ol' 9-to-5 that stops me)
Anyway, here I am in May, feeling a lot more content and happy that the problems of the past few months are resolving themselves.
I am looking forward to Soonercon (and have to get on the ball for Anthrocon) where I'll be meeting a friend from Compuserv days (that would be the early 1980's, kids) that I haven't heard from in decades! Later on in the summer I'll go to Armadillocon and catch up with relatives and friends in Austin... and sometime in there we're going to shoehorn in some time to go see the Texas Shakespeare Festival - one friend is involved in that and we'll be going to Kilgore to hang out with them for a day or so.
And our annual trip to Florida to the condo (inherited from my parents) is coming up.
I think it's going to be a wonderful summer!

Hope your daughter is happy in the new place, and that the renters turn out to be decent and reliable.
We're goin' back to the Shadows again !
Out where an Indian's your friend!
Where the vegetables are green,
And you can pee right into the stream!
(And that's important!)
We're back from the Shadows again
"Antelope freeway..."
You're busy, and doing a lot of good work, and that's great.
I wrecked my right knee in a bicycle crash when I was 14. It's usually fine, but every once in a while it's a problem. It was giving me trouble in the last few days, to the point where I was limping, but is much better today. That hasn't happened in a LONG time.
I can't believe how many cons and such you attend.
Hey, I'm old...
Come to think of it, we still use "in the late devouring age, fish became obnoxious" bit.
