Why no thanking via shouts?
12 years ago
- It consumes time in having to switch to one's user page (or, for very active accounts, "Manage Page Shouts") to read the communication.
- It feels less personal than a note or a friendly comment on the user's journals/submissions.
- Some users go so far as to consider it spam, in that a shout advertises the shouter's page.
There are probably other legitimate reasons, but whatever the reason(s) might be, it is ultimately a matter of respecting others' wishes regarding communication on their home turf.
Often, policies rendered in plain text go unread. I used to have my own sitting right at the top of my userpage in bold red text, but it didn't seem to deter shouts of thanks much.
It's my hope that having an icon will call more attention to such desires, and lead to a little less cluttering of shoutboxes for those who desire such.
(Also, PLEASE let me know if there's already a group of this sort on FA. I looked around and found that none of the obvious account names were used, or if they were, didn't have more than the default paintbrush icon.)
(edit: since I've dropped this on my own main page, I've had exactly one shout of thanks --
and it amusingly and specifically referenced the presence of the nothanking icon,
so I'm feeling that this is actually a useful thing I've done here.
no need to +watch, just stick this puppy in your profile and be done with it...
though I'd love to get a note if you are finding this an effective measure. :3 )

I did this once to someone who didn't like it. I didn't really know, and she ended up being a huge dick to me about it :\ she turned ME into a bad guy. She made me look like I was the worst kind of asshole who had ever existed just because I took 5 minutes out of my way to construct a nice "thanks for watching me", except it was a lot longer than that. I think all my "thanks" through, but after I explained it to her? She cussed me out and blocked me and made a journal, without referencing me, about how I'm a huge dick who doesn't respect anyone and doesn't deserve friends and who should learn how to be a proper person :l Ya, she copied and pasted my thanks into her journal. So I know it was me :\ This is why I really don't like, or see any reason, for a group like this. I think it's just an excuse for people to be dicks and feign being victims.
some people over do it, just like some people who give thanks for watches and fav's are actually thankful, but the only way to take the negatives out of life is to rid ourselves of the positives along with them, if i dont want the heatless copy pasted thanks, i cant have yours either, and if im to have a group to tell people to not thank me, a positive in "my" view, then i have to take the crazy ass holes who will join along with it, this "theme" can be applied to everything in life, the choices we make arent good or bad, just the one of a million different cons we have to sort through, i'd prefer to simply not have any thanks for watches and such, but i wont add this group on my page because it will take away from possible conversations and some people who could possibly one day be my friend may think of me as an ass for having it on my page, + adding this to my page means my list of awesome people gets reduced by one
This group is all about user preference.
I'm not saying there shouldn't be any thank-shouts ever --
Just please don't make them to folks who don't want them. :3
But I think the most damning thing of all is that such people are forgetting why it's called the Shout section. It's meant for shoutouts. And such shoutouts would generally be in the form of thank yous to express appreciation for you taking time out to check out your page, fave one of their gallery submissions, or add them to your watch list. If you would presume to be so vengeful towards a person over them just trying to be courteous and polite, then frankly you have no business being on FurAffinity. That's just my two cents on the matter.
Such expressions can be just as easily made via notes (for those users who have them enabled).
Anyway, here's a fun fact for you (five months hence from your comment):
I don't carry the no-thanking icon on my own art page because I don't mind such shouts.
This group's for those who do have issue(s) with it, for whatever reason.
The biggest reason is unsolicited advertisement, otherwise known as spam.
Regardless of whether you agree with this, it's still up to the user to decide what content is appropriate in their shoutbox.
If they don't want thank-shouts, then darn well don't make 'em and cause unnecessary annoyance.
Spam is a matter of common sense. Of course, no one wants spam on their page. But posting this icon will just send the wrong message, or rather blow it out of proportion. So if anything, that icon should read "Spam Shouts" with that circle and line through it.
Precisely why not to do it!
Thanks for this and hopefully it keeps people from thanking me in shouts. One can only hope.
I'm thankful for my followers, and I always write a journal to my fans, instead of writing a thanks for the watch on their pages. ;;; But, yeah, I'm sorry you had to deal with that. That's so disrespectful. People really should treat their fans better. Without my fans, I can't get anywhere as an artist and that's how I feel. I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way. And I was like huh, where is this comment coming from??? xD was like oh, I forgot I wrote this here... Hm.. Cool! :D Ahaha~ I hardly get comments since I'm not popular yet. I've been trying to make a name for myself for a year, and it's been a really fun road so far. That's a great goal though, my goal is pretty much the same. I first started posting art as a way to cope last year, and now I have met great friends on other social media, like twitter and Tumblr, and I have met one on FA, so, it's really great meeting friends and sharing my art with people that likes it. It really keeps me going, no joke. Anyway, I hope you have a nice day today, and thanks so much for sending me a comment, means a lot! ;U;
* hugs * and I'm glad it means a lot ^^
