Call for contributing artists for the Anthro Calendar.CLOSED
Posted 11 years agoUPDATE: Thank you. Entries are now closed and successful applicants will be notified soon.
(Cross-post from our DA group.)
Limited spaces have opened up in this years calendar. If you would like to participate, have amazing skills and a strong portfolio you are encouraged to apply for a position.
How do people contribute to the Anthro Calendar?
Rare occasionally has openings for new artists to join the team and contribute artwork for an edition. The selection process can vary and is not set. There can be an open call for artists to apply with their portfolios or the producer can personally invite an artist.
Remember that there are not always openings. With only 12 months in the year there is obviously limited spaces for artwork in the calendar. The producer may be satisfied with the existing line-up of artists and wish to keep it the same.
What factors affect an artist's chance of selection or invitation?
Rare looks for exceptional artists and top of the line contributions. You can view the standard of art the producer wishes contributors to aspire to here: http://anthrocalendar.deviantart.co.....rites/49267557
Before applying, an artist should make sure their portfolio contains full coloured works of this nature. An artist will never be selected on a "promise of potential", only proven experience.
Other factors include popularity, previous contribution, location and willingness to purchase copies of the calendar for private resale. Rare is a product and it's purpose is to generate profits for the artists. The more copies printed and sold over the world the better the profit margin.
Requirements?
Produce an 8.5x11 inch full colour work - theme and subject TBA.
Final art deadline is September 1st with milestones in between.
Artists will be invited to join our group on Livejournal to receive and contribute feedback on works in progress.
While it is not mandatory, artists are encouraged to buy calendars at cost for resale at conventions and other avenues.
Please send links to your portfolios anthrocalendar[at]ashalind.com by June 30.
You can highlight particular pieces if you want by linking them individually. Please also introduce yourself and tell us why you should be invited. If you have already sent your portfolio prior to this, we have a record of it but feel free to touch base again.

Married!
Posted 11 years agoOn Friday 22.2.13, at the beautiful Lyrebird Falls in the Dandenong Ranges, I married my best friend. :)
The weather was amazingly sunny despite the forecast threat of thunderstorms and rain, allowing for a stunning garden ceremony. Reception was a blast, food to die for and lots of fun to be had at the photobooth.
I can't wait for all the photos to come back. Money well spent, that's for sure! ;)

Stolen from the lovely ~Ithkale :>
Where are you staying?
My house!
What day are you getting there?
When Chairman Pete tells me to start setting up! :P Sunday/Monday, I forget...
Where will you be most of the time during the days?
Dealers den
Where will you be most of the time during the nights?
Home possibly working on badges. I have weeknight netball too...
Who will you be hanging out with?
Camerooni and Sirim, my dealer assistant biatches!
Can we hang out?
Doubt it, I'm pretty busy.
Who are you hoping to meet?
The dingo puppies!!
What time do you get up/go to bed?
Midnightish. Alarm goes off at 7am...might not actually get up though.
What's the best way to get a hold of you?
I'm always at my table! You can also email me or use the Bloodhound app to get in touch with me later.
Do you do free art/trades?
Nope. No free art. Need to make a living. Sometimes in the past I have bartered goods with other dealers but it's rare.
Are you selling anything at MiDFur?
YES. Anthro Calendars, art prints, badges, key rings, writing quills, originals too!
What do you look like?
Long blonde hair, might have colours in it the ends. Average build with a large bust...female! :P
Do you have a fursuit?
Nope, not my thing.
Hugs?
Only if I know you a little bit.
Can I talk to you?
Yes, you can! Feel free to ask me stuff, just don't loiter around my table all day. :P
Can I look in your sketchbook?
I don't have one, but I will have many artworks on display for you to sift through.
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
Don't have one, but I'll draw in yours for a price. ;)
Can I buy you a drink?
No that's ok, thanks. I have to drive. :)
Can I take your picture?
Sure! You can get a picture with me if you want.
See you all there!!

Too busy for a life! :P
Posted 11 years agoSo after about 10 weeks of unemployment and no commissions (aside from 2 where I was kindly thrown me a bone), I find myself inundated with offers for work. My old boss at Infinite Interactive bailed me up for a weeks worth of work at the same time I was in negotiations with 2 other game companies that need me long term! Then I wake up to an email from some one else out of the blue asking me my rates in relation to concepting some tabletop miniatures. Seriously, it never rains, but it pours!
I had to tell the tabletop guy I was too busy until at least September. I've accepted 2 jobs as a sprite animator that will take at least 5 weeks and I2 will have more work for me down the track. Basically I'm working from 7am to 11pm. Somewhere amongst all that I have to finish producing the Anthro Calendar, which btw, is freaking awesome so pre-order it!
So anyway, probably not going to see much from me or of me for a while. If you want a commission...talk to me in November! :P Any work I complete for my clients will most likely be covered by an NDA so I can't upload it until it's released. I do hope to finish one thing though that I've been working on secretly...

New Website
Posted 12 years agoSince my redundancy I've been working on making my website more "pro" and less "exclusively anthro". I do have a lot of work in a range of styles, and I think it's time I showcased it. I may not have a degree in graphic design, but I've always had an eye for it. If I can't find something else in the games industry, then design may have to be a fall back. I have a Bachelor of Multimedia, so maybe I can even try my had at web design. I was able to make this after all...with a little help. ;)

Redundant...
Posted 12 years agoYeah, so after 4 years in the games industry dodging job cuts, redundancies and mergers, I finally got the chop! Unfortunately in a studio that predominantly sticks to 3D iOS games, there's not enough work to go around for little ole me. ;( It's been a really awesome experience and I will miss all the people (and all the free food!), but I can see many doors opening and opportunity arising. I will actually be posting some of my work on SPY Mouse over the next few days, so stay tuned.
So, in lieu of this devastating news, I am going to attempt to try my hand at freelancing while I poke around for something more stable. I guess that means commissions are WIIIIIIDE open!

MiDFur experience and new inspiration!
Posted 12 years agoLast week I attended MiDFur 13th: Tales from the Crypt and had a great time. It was my fourth year there and I have always felt I do great in the Dealer's Den. This time was no exeption. I made my own personal budget and the reward for reaching it was to buy myself an iPad. I had a lot of help from my good friend Camerooni (he was asked if he was my personal slave, lol) who did coffee and lunch runs, merchandising and just kept me company for 4 days. Thanks Cam!
I painted quite a few badge commissions. 2011 was a really quite year for me in terms of art produced, but with my recent art splurge, I feel really possessed to vomit out a load of works this year. It's not exactly a resolution of the New Year variety, but a goal I'd like to achieve. It just happens to coincide with the first month. :P I'd like to dig up some old sketches and finish them, make a new range of bookmarks, paint one thing per month, and open back up for commissions. Obviously this means not so much video gaming, and that's quite hard with Skyrim whispering to me from the corner of the room...
I also made a different Facebook account for the Anthro/Furry Fandom and I basically accept all requests, as opposed to my personal account which is just for real friends. You can find me under Ashalind Art.

Dear scumbags...
Posted 13 years agoTo the people who are re-uploading my work to furry porn sites such as e621 or Furry Booru,
YOU ARE BREACHING MY COPYRIGHT!
You do not have permission to re-upload my work. Even if it is something you commissioned from me, it is not your god-given right, but something that must be negotiated. I don't want my work anywhere I don't know the location. It is not fair on me to have to trawl the internet looking for images in breach and then report them. That's time I could spend making more art!
Not only that, but tagging my real name is quite rude and thoughtless. I don't want professionals googling my name for a prospective job position to be slapped in the face with animal boob! I keep the adult art and the clean art separate for a reason and I would like it to stay that way.
I know that the majority of people who read this are innocent and are faithful watchers, but to those few of you that are either deliberately or unknowingly doing it, this stops right now... OR NO MORE ART!
Thank you, Queen Bitchface!

Calling artists for RARE 2012!!!
Posted 13 years agoEDIT: APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED. THANKS TO ALL WHO APPLIED. SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS TO BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY.
Applications are now open for artist participation in the next anthro calendar entitled:
RARE: 2012
A Mythical Anthro Calendar
(Cookies to those who guessed correctly.)
Project Outline
This edition will feature an anthropomorhised range of creatures from various myths and legends.
Contributing artists will be required to illustrate a creature and submit it to the Creative Lead by the deadline as well as demonstrating progress for the duration of the project. Both traditional and digital mediums will be accepted. Proficiency in your chosen medium is expected as well as a keen attitude toward constructive criticism. Artists will be required to subject their pieces at various stages to the scrutiny of the rest of the group to ensure the best possible art is submitted.
The deadline for submitting finished art is AUGUST 31, 2011.
It is a requirement that participating artists make themselves contactable online by email AND through correspondence via the #anthrocalendar group on DeviantART. In past years, Livejournal has been a useful tool in the sharing of WIPs and receiving of feedback, and will most likely be used again. Artists will need to sign a contract following a successful application, which will include the terms of the project as well as any financial obligations towards production.
Costs to Contributors
A pre-order campaign will be run to reduce costs, however an entry fee of US$35 will be required from successful applicants to secure their spot in the project. This fee will go towards advertising costs, promotional giveaways and the minimum order quantity of calendars. Artists may forfeit all or part of their deposit if they fail to meet submission deadlines. Any profits gained through sales of the calendar will be paid out to the artists as a percentage via PAYPAL.
Artists will be able to order as many extra calendars as they wish at cost price to take to conventions or sell on their own website at RRP. All shipping and customs costs on these extras will be the responsibility of the individual.
NON-FINANCIAL individuals need not apply.
Selection of Artists and Species
Artists will be selected based on their artistic ability, suitability to a species and their experience in other anthro related projects. Style is important, as the calendar must have continuity across the artwork. Previous contributors to RARE: 2010 and 2011 are more than welcome to apply for a position again, however rotating artists is essential in keeping a product looking fresh and innovative. Exclusion from the 2012 calendar in no way implies a permanent or future refusal.
RARE: 2012 will require unique art for 12 months, and a centerfold allowing the participation of 13 artists. The anthros that will feature in this year's calendar have already been determined, therefore interested parties are required to apply for a particular species listed below. If the application is successful the artist will be informed of their allocated species. Artists may show interest in a maximum of three species, but will only contribute one. Less popular species may have less applicants and vice versa so keep that in mind.
Species List
Great Dragon
Sea Serpent
Unicorn
Thunderbird
Pheonix
Hellhound
Peryton
Gryphon
Catoblepas
Jackalope
Kitsune
Bakeneko/Nekomato
Tanuki
Guidelines on submitted artwork
The calendar is rated G for all ages. No nudity or blood.
No humans.
Other creatures may be included as long as they also display some form of anthropomorphism, ie clothing, gesturing/behaviour, human anatomy, etc. It must still be clear which species is the focus of the piece.
Artwork should be submitted no smaller than 3300x2550px at 300dpi.
Applicants must complete the form found here:

Please make sure it is filled out correctly and in full where indicated. Artists will be selected by the Producer and the decision will be final.
Only successful applicants will be notified and a list of all participating artists will be made available to the public once finalised.
Applications close JUNE 05, 2011. Good Luck!
