US Cons survival guide
Posted 12 years agowritten by Hypr
Okay, I been wanting to write this for a while. In general the most common US cons furries go to are Anthrocon, FCN and MFF. (And to the lesser extent furfright and Furlaxation come September)
But anyways the reason i am writing this is to save troubles / time / money when entering the US from vital information to how much one can bring back to roaming on cell phones.
When you enter the united states be sure have a valid passport or enhanced drivers license, if you don't have either, then you will be denied entry into the states, but you can pay the passport office to do a rush passport.
Money, be sure you bring enough of it while you are away, typically for a trip, expect to spend $100 a day, even though it seems impossible to but buying commissions can really make money disappear fast.
Know your limits and play within them when you cross into the United States and you plan on bringing stuff back because Canada Customs isn't afraid to tax you if you go over, as of right now if you go for the day you can bring back $50 tax free (6-12 bottles of beer) for over 48 hours its $400 1.5 L of liquor or 24 pack of beer, and for 7 days its $750, a bit more but I highly doubt anyone will be in the US for a week unless they have a timeshare)
When Just 1st comes up things will change, less than 24 hours you can bring back $200, more than 48 goes up to $800, as well as 7 days, $800 as well, alcohol and tobacco limits stay the same.
Don't lie to US or Canada customs about where you are going or what you are doing, and don't complain that customs was being mean or yelled at you, because odds are you probably did something stupid, and customs doesn't have time for any BS they have a stressful job as it is. Treat them the same way you want to be treated, and the border crossing will be fine. And don't lie about how much stuff you bring back, if you go over the tax exempt limit or else you will be taxed.
Cell Phones
If you want to save money be sure your cell phone if it takes SIM cards it can be unlocked then you can purchase a US sim card and go on a US plan while at the con. T-Mobile offers 10 cents a minute in the US to anyone. vs whatever Rogers or Bell or Wind charges for roaming. In the long run you won't have a huge cell phone bill to deal with.
**Added by Talmak
Otherwise you can buy a cheap pre-paid phone and use it locally I got one 5 year ago from walmart (verizon phone) and I simply stop at a verizon outlet paid 20-40$ and use it as a local phone ; post the number on your twitter or tell your friends et voila **
Weather
Dress appropriately for the time of the year.
FCN has a mix of warm and cool days, its perfect for fursuiting but it can be a bit rainy sometimes
Anthrocon, Hot and humid days, fursuiting can be uncomfortable, generally shorts weather.
Midwest Furfest, cold and windy, its colder in Chicago in November vs Toronto, so do yourself a favor and bundle up a bit.
Cons in General
FCN
It is typically cheaper to get a sponsor for FCN due to the free food and drink vs buying meals every day at the con, I've sponsored this con ever since I started going in 2009, and it saved me quite a bit. The hotel is in a shopping area, so it is perfect for the cross border shopper with Dicks Sporting Goods, Best Buy, Office Max, and Meijers all within reasonable walking distance. (As well as good for the furry artist who has ran out of stuff for conbadges etc)
Anthrocon
It is downtown Pittsburgh, humid and rainy most days, expect to do a good bit of walking here, get some comfortable shoes and expect to walk in excess to 75 - 100 miles during the duraton of the convention. Don't overdo the fursuiting either.
MFF
It is away from shopping ares, but I wouldn't go outside since they don't call Chicago the windy city for nothing.
Rideshares and Roomshares
Be sure you know who you are riding and rooming with for the cons, be sure their passports are valid. Have a backup plan for a ride to the con, nothing is more stressful than bringing a fursuit with you on the greyhound or on the air plane (if you decide to do MFF, Texas Furry Fiesta, FWA, or FC.)
Make the rideshare into a road trip, it can help like if you know a good restaurant to go to for lets say AC or FCN suggest it and the driver might be more than happy to go there, like typically for FCN and AC we stop at the Cracker Barrel either on the way down or the way back. Just to take a break.
If you are doing a convoy, it might take a bit longer to get to the con, but it is still good to go with a group to a convention, last year my group and I turned a short drive to Pittsburgh into an 8 hour road trip.
Be sure you know the laws in the state or country as a whole you are in because if you commit a crime in the US you could be banned from entering the states for a few years, or face jail time in either Canada or the US.
Airplanes
Check your boarding pass, no liquids on board etc
Alcohol
21 is the legal drinking age in the US, respect the drinking age there, even though you are 19 in Ontario doesn't mean you can legally drink in the US.
Pennsylvania is a dry state you think the LCBO is bad, try the PA control board.
- Beer is sold in only beer stores
- Liquor in only liquor stores
- 12 - 5 is the times the liquor stores are open and closed on Sundays, if you plan on going to Anthrocon (even though it is an unenforced law from the days of running moonshine and is still illegal but police don't enforce this they are not going to do random trunk searches at road check points believe me people in Ottawa go to Quebec for beer since its cheaper) if you want to get alcohol, but no time get it outside of PA and save the trouble.
- Don't expect to find beer or liquor to be found in grocery stores either you won't find any
- if you want a six pack you can buy a six pack at the bars they will let you do it.
Michigan can be expensive for alcohol due to when Governor Jennifer Granholm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jennifer_Granholm was governor of Michigan from 2003-2011 during her terms she raised the prices on alcohol and cigarettes to deter drinking and smoking due to the high unemployment rates that Michigan has suffered (it became more apparent due to the recession in 2008/2009)
However Michigan has bigger payouts for deposits of beer, liquor and soft drink cans and bottles, 10 Cents, mind you not everything can be returned.
Indiana is cheaper than Illinois for Alcohol
19 states in the United States are control states as the governments control the sales of Alcohol About 1/4 of the US lives in a control state, which includes Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoho.....#State_listing
Tipping
- Waiter / waitress 15% is good, 20% for exceptional, and bad service no less than 10%. Groups may have a different tipping rate, which is included on the bill.
-Wine steward, 15% the cost of the bottle,
-Bartender 15 - 20% of the tab, mininum 50 cents per soft drink and $1 per alcoholic drink
- Parking Valet (usually $2 tip)
- Hotel doorman / bellhop $1 per bag, but $2 if you just have one bag
- Hotel Housekeeper $2 - $5 per night, but since conventions give 1 dollar per how many people are in the room, don't save it till the end since different house keepers clean the room each day
Exchange rates
Since 2002 the US dollar had been dropping against the Canadian dollar, and the Pound, Most times the CAD vs USD is at par or withing 1 - 2 cents different
Banned stuff
- Drugs of course, getting caught with any drugs will get you life in prison for trafficing.
- Kinder Eggs, (believe it or not) they are banned in the US due to the small parts kids can choke on
- Absinthe (they sorta lifted the ban but there isn't much wormwood in North American Absinthe, its the European stuff they are concerned about, Chartreuse is a legal alternative which apparently is a bit stronger.
- Four Loko (the mix of alcohol and caffeine was the reason the FDA banned it)
Medical Insurrance
Get it, since it tends to be a bit pricey in the US if you need medical help. CAA is best to get it, banks charge a bit more.
**Added by Talmak
Some personal or work insurance, as well as credit card come with Limited coverage, For quebec resident, Provincial system will reimburse some fees but you will have to pay up front check Medicare site for more info and details **
I believe we covered everything (I hope)

*MORE UPDATES TO COME!*
For the fifth year in a row, Furry Canada Day(FCD) is back again!
When: 1st July 2011
Where: Start at Supreme Court at 2PM until the end of fireworks at 10:05PM
Why: Be proud! Be furry! Be Canadian! Be yourself!
Furry Canada Day is our annual way of celebrating Canada's birthday with a furry twist.
For the past four years, we've gathered in downtown Ottawa to help make Canada Day a little more special for everyone.
Your mission is simple, should you chose to accept it: walk from the Supreme Court to
the National Art Gallery, followed by a meal, and finally regroup for fireworks.
Psst... We've have a secret:
For those who plan on coming, we'll be giving out a limited number of Canadian flags
decorated with paws for free. There will be a very limited number, so its first come first
serve. Also! This years will be all medium flags and no small flags!
AFTER THE WALK: Base on the feedback we got from last year we decided to bring the blue tarp (At the location for the fireworks of last year) at the same location but right after the parade. This will act like a place to meet up and relax until the fireworks gets started.
TAKE NOTE: That even if the tarp is a nice place to leave your things that it should not be consider a place to simply leave your things and comes a few hours later as we CANNOT garanti the safety of your belongings.
Events at Canada Day
There are two main events planned for this year, the walk and the fireworks.
The Walk, starting at 2:00 PM:
1. We will walk from the Supreme Court to Parliament Hill and then there shall be
pictures, laughs and hanging out. The official group picture will be taken near the war memorial.
2. Afterwards the walk will bring us to the National Art Gallery, about 5 minutes
walking distance from Parliament Hill where we'll take a break.
3. Break for food, drink and unsuiting.
The Fireworks, starting around 9:00 PM:
4. After eating, meet up on the Quebec side of the river, at the Museum of Civilization.
There will be a nice big tarp set up for us before everyone arrives, but
you're welcome to bring folding chairs or other seating since space fills up quick.
See you on the hill =D
