Siphonomorph adopts?
Posted 3 years agoWho would be interested in adopting a siphonomorph? (See my most recent submissions for more)
I'm still thinking about basic details like if I want to make it a one-off or species, as well as how to allot them, so your input is welcomed on any aspect of the adopt process!

A reminder about COVID-19
Posted 4 years agoWho is this for?
This is mostly aimed at fellow Americans, but is still relevant to everyone.
This information will seem obvious to most of you, but it's important to give some thought to it to reinforce your resolve and keep complacency at bay. If you're skeptical to the seriousness of this pandemic, please keep reading and give some thought to it as well.
Why are you posting this now?
I feel like there's a lot of pandemic fatigue setting in (especially in the USA). The sort of complacency that this spawns is the biggest enemy in this sort of fight, where the outcome is dependent on every person in a community doing what they can to prevent the spread. I've seen increasing numbers of people walking around in tight packs, not wearing masks, and generally seeming to act as if nothing is wrong. I'm posting this to remind people that there is something wrong, and it's not going away without your effort. I know it's tough, I know it's stressful, but we have to remind ourselves of why and how we're doing what we do from time to time to try to move toward a better outcome.
I'm also posting this because there are a distressing number of holdouts that believe that this is not an issue. Below I lay out some points that I feel highlight how it is an issue, and how it's not even that difficult to treat it as an issue. If you're not such a skeptic, you can contribute not just by checking any of your own complacency that might be creeping up, but spreading this info around to sway others. The more pressured the skeptics are, the more likely that they'll acquiesce to contributing to reasonable mitigation.
Why should I care?
COVID-19 is not just dangerous because of its mortality rate. It's dangerous because of its morbidity rate. Even if you're young and healthy, you have a significant chance to be crippled by blood clots and permanent lung damage.
If you have any family or friends that you love and care about, you need to be aware and take care. By risking yourself you're risking them. Even if you're distanced from them, if you're exposing yourself then you could be a link in the chain that leads to your loved ones' disease. Though individual odds are low, if your entire social circle gets infected, the chance is high that one or more of you will suffer permanent damage or death.
If you're concerned about the economy, consider the long-term economic impact of letting the disease run rampant, leaving society to have to care for a significant percent of the population who was permanently crippled by the disease. The economy isn't likely to die just because we're pumping the brakes now. The whole world is impacted; no one's getting a significant jump on anyone else. Even if we try to take the opportunity to outpace other economies, our own risky behavior may lock us out from them and create the same economic impact as if we'd just hunkered down. We're looking at
extended travel bans due to poor control (including business travel), and potentially even soured trade due to diminished trustworthiness. In short, taking this pandemic seriously is better for the economy in the long run than trying to ignore it and going back to normal.
What should I do?
Here's the good news, especially for skeptics and people fatigued from long quarantines:
A pandemic does not require an all-or-nothing response. There are sensible and easy steps that you can take to mitigate this in your community without sequestering yourself indefinitely.
Wear a facemask. Be sure you're wearing it correctly. It's preferable to wear something with a filter element small enough to catch all droplets (PM 2.5 filter standard), but any covering is better than nothing. Be sure that it filters both ways (ie no one-way valve)! Make a fashion statement of it, find something that you'll enjoy wearing! If you're comfortable with being in a mask for extended periods, wear your mask whenever you go outdoors. Set an example and help de-stigmatize mask wearing for others who are nervous to break that mold and do their part.
If you've never worn a facemask before, it might be stressful and you may feel panicked or dizzy. Take time for self-care to calm yourself and go at a pace you're comfortable with. There's not enough volume within facemasks to trap enough CO2 to actually suffocate you. Take care if you have weaker lungs, though, as the increased resistance from the filter may make it harder to breathe.
Keep your distance from others. Try to keep at least past hand-shaking distance when passing people. In times like this, it's a show of respect; respect for yourself, the person you're passing, and for your community as a whole. Respect enough to invert some social norms for everyone's benefit. Try to do this even if you're with friends. If you're hanging out with friends, especially in groups, try to do so in a setting where you can spread out some distance between each other.
Wash your hands thoroughly. Take care that you don't touch your face before you do, or potentially contaminated clothing after you do. Is there anything else to belabor on this point?
Be aware of your area's active case rate before going out. I know it's a probably too hard of a sell to say "Don't go out at all except for essentials," but I will say you should be aware of how active the pandemic is in your area before going out for social activities, especially dining. The more people that touched something you'll be touching, the more likely the transmission, and that multiplies with the virus prevalence in your area. Try to aim for more distanced activities if there's a flare-up in surrounding counties.
All of these activities can be done while maintaining a semblance of your old routine. True, you may not get to do every aspect of everything you enjoyed prior to this outbreak, but remember that this is a passing event. It's true that it may take a year or more til we are through it, but we will get through. No rights are being stamped out because you have to wear another piece of clothing, or make personal space bubbles a little wider. As recent protests have shown, we can still make pushes for important social causes while adhering to these practices. Remember that this is an unprecedented event in living memory, and remind yourself of the stakes. Play your part in pushing back this pandemic, and show that you care.
Again, if you agree with all of this, be sure to spread this around, let other people know that this is the proper and socially acceptable way to act through both word and action.
Thank you for your attention.
