The Alabama Ruling
Posted 3 months agoI guess I ought to mention the recent ruling with regard to embryos in Alabama has got me severely messed up. Anger, anxiety, depression, and stress would be among the toxic mix of negatives.
I'm going to be clear on some things:
1) Telling me it's likely to be overturned is simply not helpful. As far as I can tell it ought to be overturned because, minimally, it violates the First Amendment by placing a specific religious take on life for what is a secular medical procedure. I'm not sure the current Supreme Court would see it that way, though, and there are a ton of awful things it can lead to, since once you've established religious rulings as secular law that basically starts a theocracy. There is, in fact, a very nice thread on this. And if you're going to say "that can't happen" remember Roe v. Wade was overturned and, more importantly, state laws were being passed in anticipation of it being overturned.
2) If you decide you're going to defend it, because you believe embryos are people, I'm simply going to block you. I don't care how long we've known one another. You are putting the unborn before the born. You are condemning women to infertility, suffering, and/or death because you consider the embryo not just her equal in personhood but her superior. Even more, I will consider you to be in support of every other horrible thing that the decision can lead to.
3) If you find this too offensive, think I ought to grow up, or otherwise want to say something negative to someone who has mentioned that he is suffering a great deal of stress, anxiety, depression, and anger you can just stop watching me or block me. I honestly don't care at this point.

Love is in the Air
Posted 3 months agoValentine's Day is generally considered a day of lovers--that is, those who are in romantic relationships. But there also are non-romantic loves too: between family members and between friends.
It can be hard for me to say "I love you" to my friends, because it's easy for it to get seen as romantic rather than platonic. But I do love my friends. I love them very much. And I hope that by writing this, they will all know it.
*It may seem odd that, given all I write, I make this a featured journal. But for all the anger and frustration I sometimes feel, I want the journal people will see to be one of love. Because I truly believe that people can be better and will be better. And, more importantly, I want people to have a message of hope and love.

Aunt Dimity's Christmas
Posted 5 months ago"'On this, the fourth Sunday in Advent,' he began, 'I would like to speak to you of a certain visitor who recently passed through our community.'
...
"He was a stranger to our village,' the vicar continued, 'a poor man dressed in ragged clothes. He was hungry, yet he asked no one for food. He was ill, yet he asked for no one's help. Had he done so, I fear, he would have been hard-pressed to find so much as a crumb of kindness among us.'
...
"The vicar leaned forward, his mild grey eyes flashing like unsheathed swords as he surveyed his flock, 'He was a poor man and a stranger, and therefore not worthy of our kindness. The poor, as we all know, are a filthy lot--diseased, dishonest, and deserving of their fate. And strangers, you'll agree, must be treated with suspicion.'"
...
"The vicar took a deep breath and straightened to his full and impressive height. His voice, usually so soothing, cracked like a whip above our heads. 'God bestowed upon us the gift of his only begotten Son, yet there are those present here today who would not bestow so much as a kind word upon a sick and starving stranger.
'As we celebrate the birth of our Lord, let us remember that in the eyes of God no man is poor, and no man is a stranger.
'In this season of rejoicing, let us be thankful for blessings recieved and eager to share those blessings with others.
'Let us see in the poorest among us the face of the Christ Child.
'In the name of the Father...'"

Evil Requires Justification
Posted 7 months agoAlways.
There is always a need to justify something that one knows is morally wrong. It's compounded by hubris, which keeps people from ever admitting a mistake or seeking to make amends--instead doubling down on a stance that becomes increasingly tenuous, yet it becomes all one has to stand on.
If you're guessing this is in response to certain recent events, you'd be guessing correctly. If you're trying to guess whom my sympathy lies with, I'll make it easy: it lies with the innocent.
It lies with the people who's lives have been turned upside down and who, inevitably, will face further problems down the road. It lies with those who will be persecuted, not for anything they've done but for who and what they are.
And yet, this too will be justified. The human misery, the punishment of innocents, the destruction of lives. All shall be justified.
If you don't think so, try figuring out why a life should be saved. I'll bet you'll find it harder to do, requiring more explanation, than why a life should be taken.

Poké Predictions
Posted 8 months agoI'm predicting a release of Paradox Pokémon:
Blazing Flames: The Past Paradox form of Entei which will be a Fire/Dragon type. This is based on Walking Wake (Suicune Paradox) being a Water/Dragon type and Raging Bolt (Raikou Paradox) being an Electric/Dragon type. I'm not sure the name will be used or not.
Iron Horns: The Future Paradox form of Terrakion which will be a Rock/Psychic type. This is based on Iron Leaves (Virizion Paradox) being a Grass/Psychic type and Iron Crown (Cobalion Paradox) being a Steel/Psychic type. Again, not sure of the name, especially since there's Iron Thorns.

Being Loyal Sucks
Posted 9 months agoIt means putting up with lots of crap.
It means being yelled at for things out of my control.
It means being stuck and dependent rather than free and independent.
It means getting my heart broken over and over by someone I love being angry at me.
I'm so sick of loyalty.

Trying to find Marc Gourd
Posted 9 months agoI opened up my Skype today to find a two-year-old+ message from a person going by Marc Gourd who, apparently, found me here and wanted to be friends.
Now I use Skype on a pretty regular basis, and there had never been an alert for this there before. I'm honestly not sure what happened. Searching here for "Marc Gourd" gets me no results. The image is of an orange cat, though I'm not sure if this is a fursona or not.
If anyone happens to know Marc, please let me know. According to Skype Marc was "Last Seen Days Ago" and I fear the worst.

My Father Went Home
Posted a year agoMy father died of a massive heart attack while on a cruise earlier today. Naturally, my brain has been playing "The Living Years" by Mike and The Mechanics most of the day.
Besides some crying, I'm basically okay for the most part. He'd divorced my mom years ago under conditions that were really nasty. He once asked me if I'd forgiven him for it, and I said yes, though it was a lie at the time. I'm still not sure it's not a lie. I've been trying to find a way to forgive him for years for what he put us through.
In the end, I suppose I'm as forgiving to him as I can be. I must have some love or I wouldn't be crying as I did. But, like anyone in this situation, I could wish things had been different somehow.

Stories and Health
Posted a year agoAround my birthday I went into the hospital with a lot of pain in my right side, enough to think my appendix was about to burst. As it turns out I had three kidney stones, one bigger than 7mm. I got an operation on my birthday to remove it (along with a stint). My journal from that date was before the operation.
I've since healed and the stint is out, but with all the anti-queer and just plain hateful legislation going on, I'm not doing too well mentally. I've got stories I want to do and I'm trying to get to them, and if I've promised you something I will get to it, but right now I feel burned out.

Including Older Furs
Posted a year agoThe furry community ought to be very inclusive. The problem is that as people get older they start getting left behind. They have a lot more needs--and need help or companionship--that aren't being met.
It's not helpful that older furs tend to either be seen as "boomers" (regardless of their actual positions on issues) or perverts (because they still like sexy bodies and puriteens are a thing).
Case in point, my friend Dineegla I feel helpless. I can't aid him. I don't even know what to say to him (though his blocking his journal doesn't help.
How can the community be more inclusive? All my grandparents died, and I often wish I'd asked more when they were alive about their lives. But being young and stupid I never was eager to listen.
Elder furs are a vital part of the community. Without elders there is no memory. We should be able to feel welcome until we die.

A Fur in Need of Help
Posted a year agoTo Sleep, Perchance to Dream
Posted a year agoWhile I say I'm fine to friends, I'm honestly not that great mentally. The various repressive laws have really been getting to me and there seems to be no end (or hope). Financially things are a struggle here too.
I tried to get back to talking with an old friend using a story/setting idea as a base idea to start on. Of course, I've talked with this friend about various ideas before, so it's really not a surprise that I got back a response that I should write out my ideas.
And I should. I know I should. But I'm so drained with everything else I don't have the energy to anymore. I just wanted to make small talk and reconnect.
This sort of thing seems to happen a lot with my friendships. I'm very close with someone for a while then something happens and we lose touch. Then reconnecting becomes very hard, as we've both changed in the interim. This isn't helped by feelings of worthlessness on my part. I can barely draw or write. I'm not witty, I'm not very nerdy. I've really got nothing to offer anyone.
Which is why, anymore, I keep thinking how going to sleep and just not waking up would be a good thing. In the short term I know a lot of folks would be terribly upset (which is why I never act on this), but in the long term? Well, people die sooner or later. Does it really matter if there's one less person in this world?

Small Government Lies
Posted a year agoIt's always morbidly funny when politicians go on about how "small government" they are really for government interference and control. Take the abortion thing. No sooner was it considered a "state's rights issue" than some politicians decided a national ban would be great. This despite the fact that women are literally dying because they can't get access to abortions they need thanks to draconian state laws (this includes one woman forced to carry a corpse to term--the baby's head never formed but state laws forbade her aborting it).
It's always this way. The religious rights crowd will never be satisfied with anything less than total control and obedience, which they will then say is true freedom. Frankly it ends up sounding like something out of a mind control story. "Your true freedom is submitting your entire will to me, your loving Master, whom you will obey without question forever."

Pokémon Type Combos
Posted a year agoWith the newest releases, I felt like I should update on which types are still not used in the games. This will fall into different categories:
1) Not used at all: this combo simply doesn't exist yet.
2) Legendary/Mythic Only: the type exists, but only for legendary or mythic pokémon. "Regular" ones don't have it yet.
3) Mega/Alternate Evolution Only: it is, effectively, a form change that doesn't last and no "regular" pokémon has it yet.
4) Regional Form Only: A regional variant of the pokémon (or its alt form) has this type combo, but there's not a new pokémon with it yet.
5) Reverse type: Flying and Fairy tend to be secondary types with only a handful or so of pokémon who have it as a primary type.
Note: 2, 3, and 4 are going to have some overlap. I'll list them.
