The Development of Fatal Frame 3 was Haunted?
Posted a month agoThese hauntings and curses that trickled out in interviews from all walks of the development team made this series almost as much of an urban legend as the experiences and nightmares it tried to emulate, setting it apart from any game in the history of the industry.
Lets start with what the director sead Makoto Shibata during an interview.
"Often I would wake inside my futon in the middle of the night, and there would be hundreds of ‘presences’ coming down the road,” he explained. “In hushed, whispering voices they would say things that I couldn’t catch, slowly walking along, filling the width of the road. Once they reached the curve in front of our house, they would always vanish.”
So with this in mind we can now move on the to hauntings the plagued the development of Fatal frame 3.
1) At night especially, peculiar events occurred at their office. A woman who stayed late alone on the floor heard a clicking keyboard that would stop when she went to investigate and then begin again when she sat back down.
2) A voice actor hearing loud knocks inside an apparently soundproofed recording booth.
3) This one took me by surprise, strange sounds heard were replicated as much as humanly possible by the sound designers and directors. At times, the unexplainable sounds were directly recorded and inserted into the game. Dose this mean we have actual ghosts sounds in Fatal frame 3??
4) This one is shocking to say the least, in late 2002 when Shibata claims a spirit of a woman accosted him in his own home. She had shoulder-length black hair and maybe a white dress or kimono and was lying face-down on his futon. Shibata stared at her for a while before he flipped a light switch, but the light didn’t turn on. The presence stayed, motionless, for a while until Shibata snapped and shouted in frustration. At the sound, the spirit finally melted away into the air.
5) During development of Fatal Frame 3, a purification was finally performed. This, though, backfired.
As if he had taken damage from the purification (perhaps he's really an evil spirit), he became ill and retreated to bed. As if he had brought something strange back from the purification with him, people kept getting sick one after the other, the equipment would simultaneously stop working, and in actual fact more bizarre phenomena occurred than ever before.
Inconclusion: You think this was to hype up the scares for the game or do you really think all this happened and all we are left with is to speculate on what really happened during development?
My opinion: I think yes this all happened. I would like to get your take on this.

How about an AmA.
Posted a year agoWhile I type up the next article. I decided to post an AmA. If you are unaware what that is, its an ask me anything questionnaire.

Posted a year agoYes you did read that right.
I talked it over with one of my team members and i have decided that with all the incredibly kind words on my last entry (that made me tear up a little) to come back and just do a few posts here and there.
I wont be doing short posts but the nice in-depth ones like i did year's ago. This will mean nice long reads for everyone. Atm i been mulling over a story to uncover, any suggestion's?
This community is amazing. Thank you again for all the kind words, its what i needed to contue my work here.

Vanguard: Saga of hero's
Posted a year agoVanguard: Saga of heros.
This was an MMORPG developed by Sigil Games Online and published by Sony Online Entertainment released on january 30th 2007. As typical of MMORPGs, characters in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes were created by the player. The name, gender, race, and adventuring class of the player character were chosen and could not be changed later. Twelve characters could be created on one account and the character's appearance could be modified by the player at any time after character creation, from the character selection screen.
Vanguard was set in a high fantasy world called "Telon", unusual among MMO worlds in that it was almost entirely persistent, with no instancing or load screens. Telon did not have "zones" in the manner of most fantasy MMOs, but there were discrete areas, sometimes called "chunks" which delineated content to some extent and served to provide general geographical reference points.
Rough start: Sigil's original Vanguard team was composed of many EverQuest developers, including designer Brad McQuaid. Development began in early 2002 and a publishing deal with Microsoft was announced in April 2002. The game's title was announced on March 16, 2004, exactly five years after EverQuest was released. Sigil displayed the game's first screenshots in April 2004 and announced that Vanguard would use Unreal Engine 2.0 in May 2004. In May 2006 Sigil reacquired the marketing rights to Vanguard: Saga of Heroes from Microsoft and announced that Sony Online Entertainment would become the co-publishers. Sigil maintained full control of development, funding, intellectual property rights, and in-game customer service (in the form of the Game Master and Guide programs). Although SOE was responsible chiefly for marketing, publication, distribution, subscription services and maintenance of game servers, some of SOE's game designers and artists did participate directly in Vanguard's development. During an interview in early January 2014 Brad McQuaid revealed that Vanguard had a development budget of $30,000,000.00. He said that compared to World of Warcraft, Star Wars: The Old Republic or The Elder Scrolls Online Vanguard's budget was 'fractional' for such an ambitious game, which put a lot of stress on the development team. The game officially launched worldwide on January 30 to lukewarm reviews and widespread criticism.
I didn't get to play the game on launch, i played about year later. I loved it (still do) to me it was everything an MMO needed, huge areas to run around, lots of places to explore and discover, as new places were found the sever would add your ingame name to a data base with the time and person who found a new area first. In a way the more you found the more bragging rights you had.
The downfall era:
On May 15, 2007, Sony Online Entertainment announced they had acquired all assets of Sigil and retained over half the developers of Vanguard to work for Sony and to continue developing Vanguard. Brad McQuaid gave an interview two days later to F13.net but since then has not made any public comments about the game. On Dec 22 2009, the team outlined the road map for the game in the year ahead. Due to limited resources and a new focus on bug elimination over ambitious content releases, some of the game's anticipated updates were shelved indefinitely.
SOE announced on May 31, 2007 their intention to begin merging servers; the mergers were completed in August 2007. All player-owned housing was reset at this time, causing some controversy among the player community. The mergers left Vanguard without a dedicated role-playing server and without a team-based player-versus-player server. These servers were merged into two servers on July 7, 2010.
After the fall: On March 12, 2009, SOE announced that it would add its LiveGamer Exchange RMT service to Vanguard, which allowed trading game money, items, and whole characters between players, for real currency. On July 7, 2010, the three remaining US game servers were merged into one, bringing the total number of Vanguard servers down to two. After a long hiatus, new game content was announced at the end of July 2011. A game update was released on August 10, 2011, with another at August 24, 2011. On March 21, 2012, SOE announced that Vanguard would become free-to-play in summer 2012. On August 14, 2012, Vanguard became free to play.
Sunset: On January 24, 2014, Sony Online Entertainment announced that the game would be shut down on July 31, 2014. On July 31, 2014, at 9:00 PM, the game officially shut down.
Vanguard saga of hero's was lost for good that day, as the realization vanguard was gone there was hope....
The new vanguard saga of hero's: After sunset a team of dedicated people formed a group to revive and rebuild the MMO, VGOEmulator was born to give the new life to vanguard. Being built from the ground up its still in a alpha and its playable. The privet sever is in active development and available to play by anyone.
The short and tragic history of what could have been one of the most ambitus mmos the world has ever seen, cut short at 7 years old.
I have included a link to the vgo project, i do actively play myself. Please feel free to look me up.

Boktai: The Sun Is in Your Hand
Posted a year agoThis is one game that you NEED to play outside. Boktai: The Sun Is in Your Hand has a solar sensor built in, this will help kill the vampires in game. It almost didn't stop there, hideo kojima the games producer actually pitched to have it include a smell sensor set to what else but garlic (kind of like the 3DS has the combo mic/breath port) and possibly other strong smell's to help kill the vampire's. This the first and last game publicly released with this feature. Its even in the Guinness world records.

where to post?
Posted a year agoI had an idea i want to run past everyone. We are fast approaching our 12th year on FA. Would you enjoy posts remain here or post on my discord possibly both? The discord has been reworked with chat rooms and VC rooms for the 2 pages i run here. I want to know your thoughts before i start to post again?
An apology.
Posted 2 years agoOver the past few years team members have come and gone, as of now im (DJ Snowfang) the only active team member left. I have made many unfilled promises over the years as both OSG/D20 started to slow down. Im here to apologize, i not a writer, just a person who enjoys games and game history. At the time of writing and posting this i think OSG/D20 will have to be on hold, with real life getting in the way i don't have the time to research and post content that would befit the community to my standards. I have tried to make meet ups at cons, discord chats, wanted to game with people from the community to. I feel that i have left a bad image in peoples minds. Once again all the broken promises and failed updates have taken its toll on me. I want to be as transparent as possible but still keeping my privacy outside of the forums. I love this community and started OSG as a personal project, took on D20 as a side project. For now both OSG and D20 are goin on hold.
Thank you for all your support and contributions to the community over the years.

SHAWN ATTACKS??
Posted 2 years agoMortal Kombat 2 arcade in the secret menu had a very odd counter called Shawn Attacks.
To everyone wondering, Shawn Attacks were super cheap attacks that only the AI did in MK2, but there was a chance of the player using them, albeit rare.
Liu Kang=Does two to three Bicycle Kicks in a row
If you have to charge LK for nearly 3 to 5 seconds, this seems impossible
Johnny Cage=Red Shadow Kick that randomly happens
Kung Lao=Haven't Seen Anything Odd
Reptile=Bodyless Skull Snack Fatality. I have tried this three different ways and I cannot eat someone's head while invisible
Sub-Zero=Ground Freeze an opponent in the corner. We cannot do this.
Kitana=A double fan toss.
Jax=Isn't Everything A Shawn Attack?
Shang Tsung=Morphs from one fighter directly to the next without morphing back to himself first.
Baraka=Haven't Seen Anything Yet
Mileena=Throws 2 to 3 Sai Shots in a row. Another charge button move that seems impossible to do on your own.
Scorpion=Does four to five Teleport Punch passes
Raiden=Teleports in the air.
Shawn Attacks: Who knows? Doesn't seem to be any Shawns listed in the credits. However, in an interview with a fan in 2008, Ed Boon said the fake counter was named after his cousin Shawn/Shaun, also possibly a shoutout to Shawn Liptak who wrote a program called "Imagetool" which everyone at Midway used. The counter is hooked up to "# of times Security Chip Powerup".
After much digging i seen at least 2 interviews with Ed boon saying that "shawn attacks" do exist no-one has found them yet and than the one above satiating they were a joke. So do they exist, were they just a internal joke or possibly a lost feature. But it's interesting to note that Shawn Attacks were most likely inspiration for the introduction of enhanced specials and possibly even Krushing Blows.
I have also seen that the Arcade1up cabinets for home have the same menus as the arcade counter parts, that is included in the secret menu as well.
I leave this up to you to decide, i welcome any feed back or speculation. This is one we may never truly be solved unless Ed boon himself confirms it.

Posted 2 years agoWith a lot of life stuff going on and now done im back (cons, work ect). I'm now working on a new entry in the odd/myth's that surround videogames.
No hints, ill have it up soon with some other updates.
Take care see you soon.

The most elusive Super Mario Bros 3 port has been spotted
Posted 3 years agoThat's right, we're of course talking about ID Software's PC port of the timeless Super Mario Bros. 3 which has for years been considered one of the rarest of the bunch. And for obvious reasons! The 1990 demo build was rejected by Nintendo, because as much as they liked what they saw, they did not want their intellectual property on anything but their own hardware. I'd say a few certain games on CD-i would beg to differ, but I digress...
While information about this game has existed for a few years now, including video footage uploaded to Vimeo by John Romero the man himself, the actual news this time is that someone got their hands on a copy that has been verified to be legit and will now belong to the Strong National Museum of Play. Address a few concerns.
Posted 3 years agoI really didn't want to jump in just yet with this news but with people asking me about changing ownership and other things i feel i had to step in.
Im currently changing all pages (old school gamers, D20, old school gamers YouTube, old school gamers twitch) to a single person format.
This is how it use to be, with this change it will take a bit longer to make content. I feel i can take my time and work on longer more in-depth game reviews and history. Even start up some games again on twitch.
This is just a new beginning, i hope you will all understand.
Thank you,
djsnowfang

Posted 3 years agoTo all who have made this page an amazing journey over the years, as with any it to must end. After much deep thought and life changes i have decided that it is time to move on. I have enjoyed meeting people and the opportunity to be a part of your games, this page opened up so much for me.
Me and my team will be forever be grateful of the support and contributions of the many over the years.
This page was always yours we just posted on it.
One last thank you, this would have never been possible with out the talents and knowledge of my team both past and present.

SNES is how many years old!?
Posted 3 years agoOn November 21st 1990, Nintendo's latest console at the time was finally released. Introducing: The Super Famicom. Also known as Super Nintendo overseas, this fun machine stepped up against some seriously fierce competition from Sega's own Mega Drive (or Genesis depending on where you're from). It wouldn't be until nine months later that the system finally saw a release in the American continent, and then another ten more to be released in European territory. And even then some places still didn't have it! That's one thing I don't miss at all from that era; such huge delays in between releases for different countries
30 years later and what can I say? This console is almost as old as yours truly and I still think this one is my absolute favorite of all time. The number of series that either saw great continuations or fantastic beginnings is simply astonishing in my humble opinion. I did not get an SNES until years later. In fact, I got it in the form of the Killer Instinct bundle, so a game and two controllers from the get-go, not to mention the Killer Cuts CD which funny enough I had no way of playing. Those were the ancient days, haha
What about you, guys and gals? What are some of your fond memories with the system? Did any of you get it on release day or close to?
Oh, and before we go, here's a collection of fun and quirky SNES commercials for you. Did you watch any of these?
Since I'm from a Spanish speaking country, the most common slogan used in ads like these, specially during the first year or so, was "El cerebro de la bestia" (which translates to The beast's brain). Neat, isn't it? :P

10 years!
Posted 3 years agoYes, that's right 10 years of OSG. Where has the time gone, i have so many fond memories. When i started i was solo and now i have a great team that has helped me realize the goals i wanted to make.
The past 10 years have seen more downs than ups, i'm trying to change that if you would like to help ill be happy to take on a few more team members. I think the hardest blow OSG got was when we lost every journal we made due to FA crashing, ill admit it hurt ALOT and set me back. I dont feel i have ever fully recoved but i would like to start to rebuild the history of games. With that sead i want to thank the people who have been here for years and welcome the people who just joined the group.
Thank you to my team for the keeping my dream alive and giving me an outlet to share with the world.
Special shout out to arc nova and ian whos help at cons with panels is priceless.
Hears to 10 years and 10 more!
