Well, that'll just about cover the flybys...

Remember that part about, "Doing something small, just to focus on the hair, blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda?" I guess that did not actually happen yet. I got side-tracked with doing something else. I finished that last night.

Maybe I can actually do what I set out to do instead?
Seriously, though. The more I learn about these tools, the more I find myself desiring to work with them. Up until that piece, linked above. No. No. Almost. Yes, that one right there. Up until it, I have been doing everything with a more traditional mindset. A mindset where, I may be using layers, but everything is still a created by hand, done on a normal layer. Maybe adjust the opacity some, but just, as if I was working on a traditional piece.
Instead I have now discovered layer modes. And, my wife Kacey, maybe you know of her? She has given me a basic idea of how many of them work. She suggested I watch some videos about them. Which I did. They were boring and uninformative. So, I just started experimenting with them. And, that was really the right thing to do, because... Well, that is the best way to learn.
There are 47 layers in the new piece. That is not counting the construction layers, but it is counting the base flay grey layer for each section. Of those 47, at least a third of them are Multiply Layers. The hair, for example, has three multiply layers. They are set on top of a flat green colour that covers the entire hair layer.
My technique is to sketch, refine sketch, blue-line the refined sketch, move to Sai to ink the blue-line. Then move back to Clip, and make a layer for each major part of the illustration. Example, Skin, Hair, Top, Ribbon, Sclera, Pupil... All were different layers. I make those all grey, that way I have a base layer, which can be set to keep transparent pixels, and I can focus on value and hue instead of focusing on staying inside the lines.
Oh? Why is Sclera having a dedicated layer? I really do not know? just the way I do it.
This was all free-thought, so forgive the rambling please.
