Cynthia & Amber
A soft breeze broke through the otherwise still air. It flowed gently over the feminine form that lay among the thick grass. The woman sighed deeply, taking in the sweet and earthy scents of the night and enjoying the cool wind that blew through her fur. Her crystal blue eyes gazed up at the night sky and the bright stars that hung there. The only sounds were the rustling of leaves and grass in the breeze, the chirping of the night time insects, and the soft croaks of distant frogs along the river. The night was calm and quiet
The stillness was abruptly broken by the slow, deliberate steps of someone approaching. The woman's eyes never left the sky, she knew who the intruder was. A few moments later the figure stood over her peering down at her. All details were lost in the dim light of the night, only the silhouette of the figure blocking out the portion of the sky could be seen. Their golden eyes seemed to glow faintly in the dim moon light. The gemstone set into their chest also glowed dimly, pulsing slowly like a heartbeat.
“Miss Cynthia. You can catch a cold if you lay out here like this.” their soft voice not carrying any concern for the woman. The statement not carrying any concern. Cynthia’s lips curled slightly in a small smile as she stared up into the figures eyes
“Amber, you know well enough that won’t happen.” She spoke matter-of-factly. She watched the golden eyes of her companion shift about slowly. With her fox like vision she could see well enough in dim light but her sight was not nearly as sharp as the others. The feline vision of the figure above her would grant them clear sight of everything in the dark as if it were daylight. Cynthia imagined Amber would be enjoying the sight that lay before her. The growing sounds of purring radiating from her feline assistant confirmed her suspicions. She was unable to hold back the wide grin that spread across her lips when she heard the purring.
“If the view is good then maybe you would like to join me?” Cynthia spoke with a sultry tone while motioning to the empty space beside her on the ground. The feline coughed in embarrassment and quickly turned away.
“No ma’am I don’t think that would be very professional of me. And besides I don’t want to get my suit dirty.” Amber’s voice was rich with embarrassment. Cynthia sat up to look at the woman, seen only by her silhouette blocking the stars and the dim glow of the gemstone that sat in the middle of her chest.
“Oh come now dear. There’s no need for such formality. I know your contract says you will work as my assistant and bodyguard but… well we both know we’re far beyond That.” Cynthia said with a light chuckle while rubbing her thumb against the simple band wrapped around her ring finger. “and we also both know you have plenty of clothes you could change in to. But if you insist.” She once again motioned to the space beside her, only this time the symbols and markings along her arm glowed for a moment. A quilted blanket materialized in the grass and settled for Amber to sit. The feline hesitated a moment then cleared her throat again and moved to sit beside the vixen who quickly laid her head in the woman’s lap.
“Now I know you’ve told me many times, and I have my own memories of that time, but would you mind telling me about your life before we met? And those weeks before you became employed by me as well?” Cynthia’s voice carried a gentle and curious tone. She always liked hearing about Amber’s life before they had met and hearing her thoughts during the time she was recovering after that. Amber stared off in thought for a moment as her fingers absently combed through Cynthia’s hair. It took her a moment before she finally began to speak.
“Well, as you know I didn’t have the greatest childhood.“ Cynthia closed her eyes and let her imagination form images of what may have happened while Amber recounted her time before her parents died then on to the rough streets she lived on for years after. When she came to the day Cynthia found her in the alley near death, her own memories flourished through. She remembered those weeks she had spent healing the thin and battered feline. The contract they agreed upon. Moments from the last few centuries flashed through her mind after that while Amber finished her own thoughts of those times.
“Such a sad story. You tell it best. “ Cynthia’s words trailed off as she looked up to Amber’s face, finding golden eyes staring back. Amber only nodded silently in reply as the two stared into each other's eyes. Several moments passed as they both greatly enjoyed the stillness. Cynthia was first to break away, standing and stretching with a groan.
"It's nice out here tonight but I would much rather sleep in a soft, warm bed." Amber stood as Cynthia made her way towards the small house that they claimed as home. The blanket disappeared when Amber stepped off of it to following after the vixen. As they entered the home the many invisible balls of light that sat in the corners of every room suddenly came to life in Cynthia’s presence. They were somewhat dim compared to modern light bulbs. However, the light they cast was more than enough to see and do any work that was needed. The little orbs only began to glow if either Cynthia or Amber entered a room, quickly going dark if they left. Cynthia made her way to the bedroom, yawning loudly as she sat at the edge of the bed for a moment.
"Cyn…" Amber’s voice trailed off as she entered the room. She shook her head and joined the other woman at the edge of the bed. "We'll need to return to town in the morning" Amber spoke decisively, Cynthia only nodding in agreement. After a long moment of silence finally Cynthia spoke up, her voice thick with sadness and regret.
“Amber? Do you ever regret accepting that contract?” Cynthia kept her eyes on the large, pulsing gemstone. Amber didn’t hesitate at all
“Never. Sometimes I think back to the times before we met though. I would die every time if given the choice. I never have and never will regret my choice to fall under your service.” Amber’s voice was filled with determination. She laid her hand on Cynthia’s leg and stared into her eyes, silently confirming the words she just spoke. Cynthia smiled in return and hugged her assistant tightly.
“I worry about it. My mind is always making up excuses as to why I should not be so lucky with you. Silently telling me that you must hate this decision or that…” Cynthia’s voice trailed off as she stared at the floor. Amber could guess the words she was about to say and wrapped her arms around the mage in a tight embrace.
“I love you every day and every night. My life is yours both body and mind. Our meeting may have been by chance but our love is not. Forever shall I be with you. Forever shall I be yours.” Amber spoke her wedding vows with unwavering determination and love for the woman she was embracing. She could feel her wife tremble gently in her grasp and knew the tear would leave trails down her cheeks and through her fur. Without saying anything, Cynthia held Amber’s arm and cried silently. Her heart warmed through the subtle doubts that had formed there moments ago. Her voice was shaky when she finally spoke
“Truly the ones who have lived the hardest and saddest lives love the most. You fill my life with light Amber. I am glad you accepted my contract. Glad that we met all those years ago.” she pulled away from the feline and smiled, though tears had matted the fur on her cheeks. “Lay with me? I'm tired.” Her voice was quiet but pleading. Amber nodded and stood, stretching. Cynthia moved under the blankets and watched her wife move around the bed, peeling off the various layers of her suit before eventually climbing into the bed with the vixen. They snuggled together and layed in silence until sleep eventually took them both for the night.
