Commission Terms Changing

Hey all!
This is gonna be a long rambly post, but I'll start with the TL;DR up front:
- I will be reopening commissions soon
- They are considerably more expensive than they were last year
- Yes, I have started animating, but no, I will not be offering animation commissions (yet)
If you would like a long-winded explanation for the above, grab a drink, settle in, and allow me to regale you with the story of how I got to the point where I'm at and where I might be going from here.
So a little over 10 years ago (give or take), I first started doing ERP on f-chat. This was where I first fell deep into the furry community and also when I developed the concept of "The Professionals" and a couple of the characters you'll still see pop up to this day.
Then I gradually fell out of the ERP scene (as people often do), but the concept I developed kind of kept growing in my imagination. So I started writing dumb porn comic stories in my spare time, and I even posted a few of them here. They're still posted for posterity, but suffice it to say, I find a lot of it pretty cringe. But hey, FurAffinity is basically made for cringe, so I don't mind leaving them up if people are still enjoying them.
And like any talentless hack writing a script for a comic he can't actually draw, I wanted my characters to be illustrated by talented furry artists that I'd grown to admire since falling into the scene. I even managed to snag a couple commissions along the way, but they were just so cost-prohibitive in general. The idea of commissioning even a page of a comic just seemed ludicrous.
But the idea of learning how to draw for myself seemed even more ludicrous. It's not that I've never tried to learn, but I just don't have a talent for it, which makes it hard for me to actually commit to getting better at it. So I started looking into character creators that could allow me to create mock-ups of my characters without having to start from scratch.
I was surprised to find that there actually weren't very many options out there at the time. Heck, there still aren't that many options to this day. If you want someone to depict your furry character, you pretty much have to pay an artist to do it, or learn to do it yourself.
Then eventually, I learned about Yiffalicious.
Yiffalicious was basically a furry sex simulator for PC. It only had 10 characters, but the level of quality was very impressive for the time. Heck, it's still kind of impressive by today's standards nearly a decade later. There are still people using it today even though production on it ended in 2017.
But the reason it ended production is because the developers decided to rebuild it from the ground up to allow people to create custom characters. At the time, they called it Yiffalicious 2 (or YL2), but they eventually decided on changing the name for business reasons to Furry Visual Novel Engine or simply "FurryVNE".
I was initially skeptical since I'd seen ambitious crowdfunded projects die, and this was probably the most ambitious one I'd ever seen. But if they could actually allow you to create your own custom furry character without needing to learn how to draw, that seemed very much worthwhile to me.
So I started following the project and in a few years, they finally released the first version of the character creator for FurryVNE. There was no animation yet, but there was a pose mode. And there were only a small handful of assets to work with in that first version, so I didn't mess around with it too much at first, but once the lockdown hit in the summer of 2020, there were enough assets for me to be able to make my first character, Jena. And so I did.
From there, I was basically hooked. But at a certain point, I ran out of characters of mine that I wanted to depict. More than that, I realized I didn't really have a lot of talent for character design yet, so I should probably practice on other people's characters.
I didn't want to ask for people's money, because I didn't consider myself an artist, and I wasn't really producing any content that they could use in a meaningful capacity.
Fast forward to late 2022 and the character editor has become much more robust, and I've become much more comfortable with it, as well as Blender, Marvelous Designer, and even a bit of Unity. More than that, I've started to wonder whether or not my work was good enough to actually start charging people for it.
Keep in mind, I still couldn't draw (still can't), so even though I'd become fairly competent at working with 3D art, I kinda felt like... a fraud? Like, deep in my heart, I still feel like 2D art requires more skill and is just more expressive. So I kept my prices very low at first, kind of like getting a discount when your barber is in training. Sure, it might turn out terrible, but at least you got it for cheap! This kept my anxiety about the whole thing down while also acknowledging that my work had SOME worth, but probably not THAT much worth.
I'm really glad I could provide pretty cheap custom characters last year, but then the middle of 2023 hit and things kinda fell off.
It's a long story, but basically, I moved to a different state, and that disrupted my work flow for months. By the way, I really appreciate all of the commissioners who've taken a chance on me so far, but especially the ones who tolerated the months-long delays on some of them.
I did eventually get caught up, and much to my amazement, just as I was getting caught up, the FurryVNE dev team invited me to take part in an internal pre-alpha test for the upcoming interactions build. So after finishing up my last commission for the year, I decided to keep my commissions closed while I focused my free time on helping get FurryVNE over the finishing line.
Over the last couple months of experimenting with the interactions build (some of which I've posted here), I've been thinking about whether or not I even wanted to re-open commissions or if I just wanted to make stuff for myself again. After all, this is just a hobby of mine, and while supplemental income is nice, I wasn't exactly making a lot for the amount of time I was putting into it.
But as I thought about it, I realized that a big part of my time investment was spent on conversions rather than just the FurryVNE character design itself, and that part I still loved doing. But because I made conversions absurdly cheap, pretty much everyone got them, even if they didn't really plan on using them, just, you know, in case they got into VRChat at some point or something.
In general, I found my entire pricing scheme was overly complicated, and not a lot of people really wanted less detailed models for less money.
So in 2024, I am going to reopen commissions (not just yet, but soon), but with a lot of changes.
First off, I've flattened the cost of making a FurryVNE character. It's just $50 now. Obviously, particularly strange or complicated characters may warrant an upcharge, and simple characters may warrant a discount, but in general, the main reason I want to keep offering commissions is so that I can help people realize their characters as 3D models for an affordable price. $50 isn't a small amount, but it's honestly more realistic in terms of what my labor is worth, and still much cheaper than a lot of other (admittedly better) artists ask for.
Second, Blender versions are no longer included in the base price. Now it's an additional $50. Part of this is to encourage people to actually try out FurryVNE. The interactions build should be available to Patreon members later this month, and it's really, really impressive, even it's somewhat buggy pre-alpha state. But also, once you have the Blender version, converting it to most other applications is much easier. If you want to make an SFM version or a VRChat version, the Blender version should have everything you need to make that happen if you want to learn how.
If you really, really want ME to do a conversion, I still will, but now I'm charging a premium for it. First of all, since it requires porting to blender first, you can only get a conversion if you've already commissioned that. But in addition to that, VRChat and VRM conversions will be another $50, because I really don't mind doing those ones as much, but it's still a non-trivial amount of work.
That said, if you want a Source Filmmaker or Garry's Mod or Second Life version, that's going to be another $100 per conversion. The stupid Source Engine process of creating character models is infuriating and inconsistent, and Second Life isn't any better. I'm still willing to do it, but not for $10 a pop.
Now, if you've been following my content output lately, you'll notice that I've been really getting into animating with FurryVNE. Now, part of this is just because I'm helping test it for the devs, and I don't mind shilling for them because they're awesome folks making incredible tech, but it's also partially because I've been having a lot of fun with it.
Odds are good that even once the interactions build is released to Patreon in the coming weeks, I'll still be doing tons of animation with it.
Some of you have actually already approached me asking if I'll be offering commissions for animations.
I just want to get ahead of that right now: The answer is no. While I've dabbled in animation here and there, I don't really know what I'm doing yet, and the tool is still very much in early development.
BUT, if you commission me for a character, I MIGHT throw together a little animation with them to help show them off as a bonus (and also as practice).
Because the truth is, I WANT to be able to offer animation commissions AT SOME POINT, but as I did with character model commissions, I have to start small.
So the last question you might have is... when exactly will I be reopening commissions? Probably by the end of the month, probably shortly after the FurryVNE interactions build is out for Patreon. I want my commissioners to be able to take full advantage of the character models without needing to port them to other applications.
