Moving Forward
I am not getting any younger, and while I definitely havent squandered my youth, I havent exactly lived my ideal life. I've had many good relationships, and built solid friendships that persist to this day but last February something happened that shattered my cozy little emotional numbness.
I'll start by saying my brother is recovering well, but it must be said that for the last three years he hasnt taken his health, wellbeing, or living environment very seriously at all. I should have moved out first sign of this crap but with the housing market as it is, I cant even afford a coop bachelor on my own since I'm on disability.
Since 2019 my brother started having declining health and we didnt know what was causing it, but he refused to go to doctors to get tested to figure out what's wrong, he was eating a lot but was wasting away. his room was a mess. Wrappers, cardboard, empty bottles and cans everywhere.. No rotting food but it was still just filthy. never vaccuumed, never mopped, never dusted.
The kitchen too was a cluttered mess it alone was his responsibility we had agreed when we moved in in 2017 that wed each have our own rooms as responsibilities, I took the bathroom and the hallway, he took the kitchen and the storage. We chose this place as a temporary place and it was nice. it was cozy. but then 2019 came along and we applied for low income housing.. Him thinking we'd be moving out soon, stopped taking care of the apartment, because why should he care? But we didnt move out soon. Soon after his health problems started.
The mess created a problem with rodents, but they had come up from our neighbors below and his wife was suffering from severe issues as well. Mostly depression and was leaving her own areas in similar states of hoarding.
Fast forward past no end of drama throughout the years, no end of arguments. My bro breaks his ankle. he goes to the hospital gets pins the set the bone and then they find out why his muscles are atrophying.
I dont remember the exact names of these conditions but he had a series of fungal and bacterial infections in his G.I tract and ON him. He's treated for this and treated, It turns out that a bad habit saved his life. See, my bro drank 5liters of diet pepsi a day. that weakened his bones.
This allowed us to catch the infections before they damaged his heart we are so lucky, still that leads to the next problem.
Things made a turn for the worse just a few days after my brother was at physio around new years. His wound had split open and the nurses did nothing, they let it go because they were waiting for their own surgeons to be available rather than transfering back to our main cities hospital, so wham. septic. they had to excise tissue and bone in his lower leg because of their mistake.
but that wasnt the worst part. He developed antibiotic resistant infections and for nearly two months the heavy antibiotics being used were having no effect. but worse they caused nephrotic syndrome, where the renal system is barely able to keep up with everything and your bodies cells start leaking water into the body. It got so bad that they had him intubated and in a medically induced coma for a week. It wasnt until I sarcastically asked if dialysis went out of style that they brought one in and the effect was immediate.
The infections were clearing up, the nephrotic syndrome passed, he survived the worst of it. That was nearly two months ago.
he lost his leg, there was nothing that could be done for it, so we are going to be aggressively seeking compensation, we dont care to go to court for that but we will make it very public and raise funds for him if they don't settle out of court.
Lawyers around here are skittish with malpractice because in Canada there's no associated cost with treatment so the government gets in very chummy with everyone. That will eventually lead to a lot of problems if they keep mistreating people.
Right now my bro is getting fitted for a prosthetic, hes getting an electric wheelchair for long distance travel. he's finally developed enough strength to sit up, and exercise again. He will likely make a full recovery from this. He may even become healthier than me.
But having said that, prior to this, the thought of death in my immediate family has always been a distant notion, the absolute destruction on the psyche.. I could never imagine it. and that's just with my brother nearly dying. he's been my room mate since 2003. ive grown more attached to him since then. Before that Id visit but not much more than that.
I still havent been able to truly get back into my hobbies since the scare, and I still have this dread moving forward, I know in the future Ill have to deal with this again. so Im gonna take every opportunity i have in the future to truly make memories, and more important, photos.
when they are gone you will cherish photos, videos, any letters and interactions so archive them. dont obsess over it, but hug your loved ones. truly appreciate what you have because the rest is just garnish
