A Tribute
I just realized that it's been almost a year since I created a journal here, and it definitely didn't seem like that long. Things are all right on my end, my health has been steadily improving and I've been gaming and working on personal projects. I hope you all are doing well too. ^^
Before I get into the heavy stuff, I would just like to point out some milestones I've reached on this site recently. Despite my relatively few submissions, I've managed to get over 2000 favorites and over 20,000 views! Thank you all for all the support that represents, and I'm going to keep going and keep climbing.
Now that some time has passed, I have some news that's on the somber side. It's not an easy topic for me to write about, the words don't come easily, so I'm just going to power through it.
Back in February, I found out that an artist I've admired for a long time, jace passed away suddenly. He was one of the first artists in the fandom whose style really captivated me and stood out in my memory. Over time, I learned that Jace had quite a following, people that his work had a similar impact on.
My first encounter with Jace's work was on the online game, Furcadia. Another player had a picture of their character in their profile, drawn by Jace, and I was instantly a fan. I recognized the warmth and level of care and detail in the picture, and I knew it was something special.
Some time later, I discovered that Jace had an online gallery of his artwork, on a site called VCL: http://us.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/Jace/
This site was a precursor to FA, and has has early work by many other well-known artists, too. His FA gallery is also still up with its extensive body of work.
There may be other sites with Jace's work on it too, but I'm not sure what they are off-hand.
Looking at Jace's work, even at a glance, you get a feel for what the man was like and the expansive imagination he had. In the past couple years, Jace and I spoke frequently in notes here and on Telegram. I was hoping to get some artwork from him, and we were discussing what that would look like, when he felt up to it. Now, I feel fortunate to have spent time with him, and met some of the people that he called friends.
I'm not sure if my words were enough to pay homage to him, and the effect he had on so many people. I recently learned that he wrote and illustrated an entire book with his world-building ideas, and someday I hope his work gets published in an archive of some sort. Either way, I'm glad to have met him, and he made me think about how we live from day to day, and about the legacies we leave behind. Thank you, Jace. ♥
