The year is 1937. It is the age of the airplane, and the age of a new breed of pioneers. Aviation has emerged from its infancy and the science of powered flight is advancing in leaps and bounds. Records are being set, records are being broken, and aircraft are continually flying higher, faster, and farther than ever before. It is a time when massive airships sail through the clouds and dominate the skies. It is an age of speed, courageous daring, and limitless possibility. Intrepid pilots and their machines are blazing a path through the twentieth century and into the future. They are the celebrated legends of their time.
Shane McNair never had any grand visions of greatness or glory, and certainly never fancied himself any sort of hero. Amidst the austerity of American life during the Great Depression, he has been content to get by on the modest pay and allowances of a lieutenant in a cash-strapped, peacetime Army Air Corps. However, with the prospect of an exotic change in scenery and some new adventures, an opportunity to transfer to the Panama Canal Zone is hard to resist. But in the sultry Latin American tropics, trouble is brewing. In Colombia, an American diplomat is murdered, and a powerful band of air pirates is implicated, headed by the infamous Captain Diego Carranza. In response, Navy and Marine Corps units are dispatched to the Caribbean to counter the activities of the elusive Carranza and his band of aerial brigands, and Shane's squadron is sent to lend support. Following an unexpected turn of events, however, Shane will unwittingly find himself thrust into a world of extreme danger and deceit. After being recruited for a clandestine anti-piracy mission by a naval intelligence officer and a shadowy State Department official, Shane finds himself fighting an unpredictable enemy, and in this world of subterfuge and treachery, not everything is as it seems.
Along the way, Shane will cross paths with the wily and ruthless Captain Carranza, a German agent and aviatrix who is as dangerous and deceptive as she is lovely, and a manipulative and scheming industrial tycoon. Shane will be joined in his fight by a navy pilot of the elite USS Macon air group, a tough and resourceful freelance bush pilot haunted by the Great War, and his rootless young partner whose only sense of belonging is in the sky.
On a journey that will take him from the exotic, sun-drenched beaches of the Caribbean, to the perilous jungles of the Amazon, to the mysterious and uncharted Guiana highlands of Venezuela, and to a final, desperate aerial battle above the art deco skyline of New York City, Shane will find more danger and high stakes adventure than he ever bargained for. Along the way, he will secure his place in the annals of aviation history.
