Group Purpose: This is a group for those who are survivalists or have an interest in survivalism irl, or those who's characters are survivalists or survival related. Our intention is to share knowledge and art about survival and other things of common interest.
What is Survivalism?
Wikipedia defines Survivalism as "a movement of individuals or groups (called survivalists) who are actively preparing for future possible disruptions in local, regional, national, or international social or political order. Survivalists often prepare for this anticipated disruption by having emergency medical training, stockpiling food and water, preparing for self-defense and self-sufficiency, and/or building structures that will help them to survive or "disappear"" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivalism )
I'd like to expand on that a bit: Survivalism is a lifestyle, practice, or mindset that is concerned with the ability to adapt, live, and /thrive/ in a wider than usual variety of situations. This may be done whether there is a /need/ to or not. Disaster or not. In one case, you have the situation where you are in a crash or a tornado or a nuclear war and your primary interest is in /staying alive/ before anything else. In another case, you are out in the woods or on the city streets, taking pleasure in the fact that you /can/ live where others (and your previous self) wouldn't be able to, but that living this way is a choice, not a necessity. And in another case, you are quite proficient at staying merely alive -- whatever lifestyle you have be it in a musty cave or in an affluent apartment -- but you sense that there is /something else/ about life and living that you /need/, which is as difficult to obtain and maintain as is basic life in the wilds.
Survival is not only the ability to stay alive in the wilderness or a disaster. It is also to be able to stay alive and live comfortably in a city or highway with no house, no hotels, no normal way of living. The latter version I refer to as "Urban Survival," and it includes things like sleeping in your car, hunting for resources like internet access and places to park to sleep safely, and finding work while "on the road." Essentially, "UrbSurv" is surviving in an environment around other people who live normally, but living at less /monetary cost/ than is normal (as basic needs are generally within reach). Urbserv may be a temporary way of living while on a vacation or road trip, or it may be a long-term lifestyle. Wilderness and Urban survival can overlap, as in the case of camping in parks in a tent and dealing with the elements and having no electricity, but going into the city to get water or food.
Some survivalist mindsets may be:
To be self-sufficient, relying as little as possible on /anyone/ else. Even a society.
To keep breaking your own limitations and pushing your limits further.
To collect skills and to make yourself as invincible as possible. For practical purpose and/or even as a kind of game.
To expose yourself to fears and discomfort so as to overcome them so they are no longer weaknesses (and vulnerabilities).
To live as freely as possible and to ensure freedom no matter what.
To see how much hardship you can take and how strong you really are. To know yourself.
To fill the niche that no one else can bear and to make it your own and love it.
To flourish where others fail.
To be secure.To be prepared.
To have fun.
To know you can.
