My sunken house
On the night of 06.06.2023, russian occupation troops blew up the Kakhovska Hydroelectric Power Plant (Kakhovska Dam) from the inside.
Thousands of cubic metres of water rushed into the south of Ukraine, into my home region and city. As of the evening of June 07 (Ukrainian time), many villages were fully or partially flooded, and part of the city of Kherson itself was also in the water.
On the left bank, which is still occupied by russian terrorists, civilians are trying to survive in the attics or roofs of their homes. There are also dead, drowned people, and most of them pensioners. The occupants do not allow people to evacuate even on their own, they do not allow people to go to more distant settlements from the water.
On the right bank, where the city of Kherson itself is located, the Ukrainian military and rescuers are carrying out evacuations of residents and animals as water continues to flow in. And all this under shelling.
My neighbourhood is in this muddy, horrible water that carries mines, feces and other horror from cemeteries washed away by the flow. My flat is on the ground floor (1st in ukrainian understanding) and there is water all around it. Whereas I used to have some hope that someday, after the war was over, I could go back to my house and see my things, cry over the destroyed wallpapers from mould and cold and continue to live there, now I no longer have any idea what to do.
The water has come up to my aunt's flat, which is the first floor (2nd in ukrainian understanding)! The water has risen to different heights in different parts of my neighbourhood, the same in the city. And the water won't stop.
The worst thing is that even when the water starts to come down, this disaster created by the russian occupants will affect the climate, ecology and life in the whole south. The once fertile lands of Kherson region may become lifeless, deserts will increase, and many animal species will become extinct and go extinct. There will be no water supply and it will take months to repair the power plants. The Kakhovska Dam will take at least 5-7 years to rebuild! Minimum! A huge part of the fertile land of Ukraine will be destroyed, fisheries and other trades will stop for many years, while the climate tries to rehabilitate itself little by little.
I just have no words.
Residents of the south, especially in my city, have always, from a young age, been taught the rules of conduct in case of a breakthrough of the Kakhovska Dam. And now, it has happened. It was blown up, the explosion in the engine room set off a chain reaction to other booby-trapped locks.
I could never have imagined that I would see a shipyard crane being swept away by a flood of water and floating down the river! Houses are collapsing, summer houses ('dachas' as we call it) are being torn down and they are floating downstream.
It was horrible and it made me feel empty. I have been frantically flicking through the news for the second day in a row and have hardly slept.
I am afraid for my grandfather on the left bank, afraid for my acquaintances who have stayed in the city.
This is not just 'flooding' as can happen in heavy downpours, this is a nightmarish, terrifying disaster!
Please, if you have the opportunity and want to help, donate money to charities, volunteers in Ukraine and beyond, who are helping the Kherson region, buying boats with motors, etc. Even a dollar can help someone or save a life.
And please don't forget that Ukraine is fighting a crazy terrorist country for peace not only in its own lands, but also for many other countries and corners of the world.
