Many of us have various reasons for not wanting to use PayPal, but I notice a bit of hesitation for some people to try new things because they're unfamiliar. I took the dive myself into these three methods and thought it might be useful to share some of what I learned!
http://wallet.google.com | http://squareup.com | http://squareup.com/cash or http://cash.me
My personal preference of these three is Square Payments, because it accepts international payments and is really small-business friendly for keeping track of sales, repeat customers, has a storefront option if I ever expand my services or products, etc etc.
Google Wallet is not a bad choice if you're really comfortable with PayPal, as its system is the most similar in terms of being able to load cash into it, carry a balance in it, and so on. Google Wallet is also accepted at some major offline retailers, if that matters to you.
SquareCash is popular for being fast and free, but it has severe limitations that can make it unattractive or unusable for a lot of people, but is generally suitable (in my opinion) for people who mostly deal in smaller and/or less frequent transactions.
I scoured the ToS's of Google and Square before I signed up for them and found no specific provisions against the sale of adult material (RL porn, artwork, or otherwise) on either site at the time, but if you're an artist seeking to use these services I would suggest sending invoices/money requests under non-specific art or art services just to be cautious.
IF ANY INFORMATION PROVIDED HERE IS INCORRECT OR INACCURATE, PLEASE TELL ME SO I CAN FIX IT. As of posting, I referred to each site's help pages to gather this information, but it may change at any time.
I welcome and encourage sharing this around to other artists and commissioners! Even though these aren't the ONLY alternatives to PayPal, they are good ones, and one less person trapped in the PayPal Nightmare is one more success story for internet commerce.
I've uploaded the individual panels in convenient tumblr-friendly size to an imgur gallery here (I don't use Tumblr, so by all means post it yerself!)
Please share your own experiences with these as well as other non-PayPal services in the comments, whether good or bad!
i made this in SAI and MSPaint because it would have just been too easy to typeset in Illustrator like a smart person
click-clock informs us of the following regarding Google Wallet:
Google Wallet being US only isn't quite correct. It only has a problem if you, let's say, are in the EU and want to pay someone in the US. The system handels currency based on the Google Wallet adress you set and has no means of calculating currency differences. So if Hana sends you an invoice in $, GW will spaz out and tell you you can't pay because based on your adress it can only handle €. If you change the adress to something in the US it will simply charge your credit card in dollar, meaning your credit card company will calculate the difference and ask a small fee for it (couple of cents, nothing more).
** SquareCash now accepts business "Cash Pro" accounts, making them perfectly safe/within their Terms of Service to use as a seller!
SquareCash now also allows its users to select a "CashTag", with which one can create a simple link for receiving money, like so:

it's a great site! small! connects directly to your debit cards and bank account! uses stripe but no need to sign up for a stripe account!
staff is super helpful and always around!
uses forms and invoices through the site
you can list your separate types of commissions & have your own profile example
it's super useful and its safer to use than paypal, they protect you from fraud and chargebacks more efficiently !

Paypal recently (read: a few months ago) for some reason stopped letting clients pay me (the e-mail receipt'd send, but I'd get nothing and the payment would eventually just time-out) and Paypal support were useless in resolving the matter.
So as you can expect, I am extremely grateful that you would research and post something like this - I had no idea there were other services mature enough that were readily accessible to the freelancer/small businesses!
Thank you!

I'm really glad this is helpful to you! I looked around for something like this a few months ago when PayPal killed my account and came up empty. I did the research out of necessity, but obviously it doesn't help ME if commissioners don't have this info either.
You're very welcome!
You're very welcome!
The problem with Square is that they do not have any -- repeat, any -- sensible way to dispute a transaction. So any problems will have to go through the card issuer.
Thank you for that info! That's likely due to the fact that it deposits directly into the seller's bank account. The positive for the seller is that the system can't be abused the way some people do with PayPal, but I understand how that can be a huge negative for the buyer. I wish people would just be more reliable in the first place :/
Actually, for the seller, it can be a huge negative as well.
See, for paypal, if a dispute is raised, there is a chance to settle it.
When a transaction is disputed at the issuer, it usually just hits right home, especially in case of online transactions/intangibles.
But yeah... Having a total of ripped off by artists or extremely overdue commissions of about $2K by now, I would sure be rather leery about stuff like square -- especially since I'll have to didpute a charge within about 25 days, not 60, to have a chance to get it refunded.

I looked it up, and there does seem to be a process on Square for dispute resolution; the buyer has to go through their card service, but Square facilitates the process on the seller's end. https://squareup.com/help/us/en/art.....lving-disputes
That doesn't really change anything that you said, but just in case anyone else reads the thread~
No payment system is ever going to be perfect. I'm really sorry that many people have screwed you :[

The thing you refer to is just on paper.
One reason is because the credit cards don't work that way. Also, if you run a quick search for square dispute resolution... The story is, essentially, they just refund and won't even tell you the dispute was filed before that.

So yeah... What I mean is... Careful with it. It's a higher risk when using for online transactions, even where shipped goods are involved.
It was meant as a system for physical in-person checkout. It is likely pretty good for that. But online is a hastily slapped on to try and snatch a piece of the pie, but no really anything backing it.

Other than that the system seems convinient.
I think the biggest issue with these things is trust. People trust PayPal because it has been around for quite a long time and don't see a reason to change. Unless it is about boobies. So in conclusion: Draw more boobies Hana!

Thank you for explaining that. Back in November, I had a non-US customer who was unable to sign up for Wallet at all, so that's probably new as of 2015.
I am always down for drawing more boobies!

I've been looking for alternatives to push instead of paypal for awhile. I even considered making a Tigerdile payment service for artists, but my card processing rates are nowhere near low enough to make that worthwhile.
Looks like square payments and/or google wallet may be good contenders.

I was reading last night that Square may even allow you to set up recurring payments! Although I personally like paying for my TDile manually, others may enjoy being able to subscribe/auto-pay.
Doesn't honestly help us international people.
I hadn't considered that Square doesn't currently accept sellers outside of the US, Canada, and Japan, so you're right about that - it wouldn't surprise me if they expand to the Eurozone soon, though, as they're currently doing very well stateside!
In the meantime, I suggest looking into Payza http://www.payza.com
I don't know a whole lot about them, but they used to be called AlertPay and the look/feel of their site is similar to Square's. If you are somewhere other than the US, Canada, or UK, they require ID/document verification but otherwise appear to be accessible Internationally.

How many (viable) alternative systems are there for pay PayPal? Also how many of them work without needing to be tied to a bank account, i.e. how PayPal used to operate without bank information ans just a balance on the account?
Viable options, I'm not sure; Google and Square at least have name recognition (Square advertises all over the TV channels I watch) and are more stable and less shady than all the cryptocurrency systems (BitCoin etc) that some have been gravitating towards.
I am unsure if Google Wallet WORKS without a bank account or card (since I set mine up with one right off the bat) but you don't have to provide any financial info at the time of sign up and it does allow you to carry a balance on the account the way paypal does.

Dwolla is another good alternative to paypal... lower fees and sane. https://www.dwolla.com/
and Amazon Register has lower fees than Square. they charge $10 for the card reader but then credit you $10 in processing fees, so it's basically free. i haven't tried it myself but am going to make the switch soon here and try it out.

Remind me to find time to write about cryptocurrencies as a possible option.
Just need to get settled in here in Oregon, first.

I'll be using Square Payments very soon. Do you have any tips or recommendations when it comes to selling commissions on Square? ;3;

I'd just say take the time to read over their FAQ! It's about as straightforward as you can get, but it's still good to educate yourself so that you can educate your customers as well.
Depending on the type and volume of commissions you sell, you can either set up a storefront and have people shop for the specific thing they want (like a shopping cart on any other internet retail site) or you can send invoices, which is what I do. You're able to describe items for sale as having either a fixed or variable price. I have mine set up with an item for sale called "Artist Services" with a variable price so I can adjust the price on every invoice as needed.
I would also very strongly recommend you check out all of the seller/shop settings, because digital receipts MAY include your information such as address or telephone number (since it assumes business info when you sign up) and you prooobably want to edit that out so everyone who shops with you doesn't get your private contact info (it's easy to do this). That's my only caution with that. :3

Right on; will do! :D
Judging by how often I accept/take commissions, I'll likely just send invoices! But it is nice to know that I can have an optional digital storefront, if I so choose.
OH GOODNESS. That's something that I would have completely missed. Thank you so much for the tip! I'll be sure to edit that as I don't like too much personal information anywhere on the internet, not to mention my address! LOL.
Thank you so much for your swift and detailed reply, as well! ^^

Chances are likely with PayPal that they absolutely will at some point, lol :P

Hmm, Squareup sounds interesting for receiving payments, but I'm concerned about being able to send people payments for commissions and items. I'm assuming you'd only be able to use it to send payments to other people with a Squareup account, which doesn't really help if it's not something that's as commonly used like paypal.
Square (aka squareup.com, square register, and square marketplace) doesn't have any accounts for buyers! It functions like checking out from any other online store. As a seller, the money automatically deposits into your bank account, rather than being held in a special "square account". As a buyer, it takes money from your Credit or Debit card.
would be willing to use one of these alternatives but since im not a popular commissioner like Drayk or Exterio, in relations to me artists will likely play the stubborn card unwilling to accept anything other then paypal while theyd likly bend to the 2 i mentioned and others...
In short switching as an artist may be easy, but as an commissioner unless your popular your at the artists whim which more often then not can prove to be extremely stubborn...

I'm sorry that has been your experience, I'm often dealing with the opposite - commissioners who refuse (or are unable) to use anything other than PayPal :/
best we can do is try to spread the word, yeah? :)

not realy dealt with. Ive just considered it a couple months ago publicly after hearing about square cash from theowlette
and all who replied where in the realms of nay to using it. most artists do also explicitly state they only accept Paypal in their ToS, no exceptions and considering how hard people are still holding to this website after it cost them bussiness(others of course also going bankrupt even) by its prone to outages just 4 months ago and how much resistance was and is thru out this community still to setting up active galleries on other websites in addition to their FA its only logical to understand that i dont see the ToS'es/Artists changing any time soon to willing to use alternatives.
And ya i would spread the word but considering i keep falling on deaf ears when asking for help in my journals i feel most of my watchers are just lousy bots or dead accounts lol*facepalm*

the only way to change that, is to change that! It'd be like... not opening your own restaurant because "everybody eats at McDonald's". it doesn't HAVE to be that way :)
May I ask a question about the Square Payments? :3 I'm considering using other methods than Paypal and since everyone uses only this service, the point "no sign-up for buyers" seems to be pretty important. How do transactions work then? The payment is taken directly from buyer's card? What about other currency?
How it works for me:
I sign in to Square and create an invoice
The invoice is sent via email
The recipient enters their credit or debit card info like they would if they were using any other online store
I get the money deposited directly into my bank account within a few days
I have had purchases go through just fine with non-US buyers. I'm not sure if the conversion is done by Square upon request, or if that's something that is done by the bank at the buyer's end, but it is automated in some fashion and I've never had any problem :)
I do recall something about there's a limitation on where seller accounts can be set up (I believe there's a list of countries you can sign up with) but the list of countries money can be sent from is pretty long and inclusive :)

does it have to be directly to your back acc or can they hold it in your account like paypal
also, if i were to use google wallet, could people from other countries pay me and just convert it into USD? how does that work? also, do they need a google wallet to pay me
Square has to go straight into your bank account. It is much safer and more secure than holding it in a PayPal account, for a whole ton of reasons...
Google Wallet does require both people to have an account. I don't know about how the other countries thing works specifically.

I want to sign up for squareup but for some reason it's not accepting my personal information
Thanks a lot for posting this info pic Hanazawa. I just found out about paypals BS now and was more then a tad worried. But after seeing this info i'm relaxed enough now to get some much needed sleep. ^^
It's sad none of these seem to really work for the uk and after paypals new Fine rule this is a big problem
THANK YOU
I just now made the switch over to Square! They're even sending me a free card reader, which is very nifty :D Thank you so much for this guide! I was just never sure there was anything else safe out there aside from Paypal.

Hmmm i think i may give a look into Square, may still keep a paypal account just as a fall back, even with the coming change, in case things dont go over well with square, but we shall see ^..^ Thanks for the info~
I wonder if some one has a list for paypal.
1) your account can be frozen for adult art
2) your account can be frozen for doing business if 'gift' option is abused
3) if any of your contact info is wrong, they won't help you
4) some one can dispute payment
Is there any thing else I"m missing?

in my case, they accused me of lying to them/providing false information when I emailed them trying to get an explanation for why my account was suspended (one of the transactions they cited didn't exist in any of my paypal records and they wouldn't tell me what was up with that)
wow that's a new one. I wounder if some one used a stolen card or some thing.
Adult oriented products and services are against their TOS, however because the artist creates invoices for sales, you can list the item sold simply as "Art" or "Artist Services" (or something similarly vague).
If you sell your work as a service (a custom commission IS an art service) then you don't have to document it as a product.
This might be different if you are selling pre made items such as prints or originals, but you can still just sell "art prints"..
This might be different if you are selling pre made items such as prints or originals, but you can still just sell "art prints"..
Stripe is a good service, but it's designed more for people who run their own website or online store, and you have to know a bit about coding/web development... So it's not as user friendly as these other options.
On these alternatives, exactly how much personal information is exposed? Of course I wouldn't want something like my address or anything shown to the buyer, but what about full names? I have a weird paranoia of giving off my full name on the internet,, which is why I've been hesitant about opening up commishes for myself.
I believe with all of these it's okay to use a pseudonym - google wallet displays whatever name you have on your google account, Square Cash allows you to use a name other than the one that appears on your bank account (I receive money from furry names all the time) and with Square Marketplace you can list a business name instead of your legal name. I hope that helps!
I've found this most useful Hana. I'll be spreadin' the word =)
Thank you, I'm glad it helped! :)
also I love your icon XD

Google Wallet will stop existing as of a couple weeks from now. One can currently no longer load cash into it, just make purchases with what's left.
That's incorrect. :) If you have a card with Google Wallet (a "Wallet Card") you can no longer use it as a debit card, or use it to store cash. You CAN still use it to send money from debit card to debit card, or bank account to bank account, to users with Google Wallet. More information is available here: https://www.google.com/wallet/card/
I DO need to update my infographic, though. thank you!

Shame that 80% of them don't accept GBP, but the one that does I guess is a PayPal alternative
OH, geez! This is EXACTLY what I needed!
I have no money online and no bank account, so it seems that Google wallet MAY be better for me.

Glad to help! Please feel free to ask if you have any questions.
Payoneer is a nice paypal alternative too. i've been working with them and is pretty reliable. Shame is not pretty well know.
The information here is still accurate, to my knowledge. If you have any specific questions, let me know!
Which one would you recommend for non US citizens who have to pay US and EU artists?
If you're only buying commissions, Square can be used by American or Canadian artists to accept credit or debit card payments from foreign countries. For European artists, I don't believe any of these options will work, but I believe that Stripe is an option they might be able to accept credit cards through as well (I'm not sure but I THINK Stripe allows non-US accounts).
BitCoin is also a theoretical option, but I don't use it personally.
The tl;dr is that most non PayPal options for non-US to US require credit or debit cards, and I don't have much info for accepting payment outside the US, but I hope that answers your question!

Thank you so much for this, with Paypal's recent addition to their rules I need to find somewhere else and this is incredibly helpful, thank you.
Thank you and you're welcome! I was wondering why I suddenly got a ton of new faves on this, haha :)
You're welcome!~ Yeah, Paypal made a new addition where they hold your funds for a month unless you like provide shipping labels then it's for 2-3 days after the item arrived at the person's house... or if it's digital they want proof and then hold it for 7 days after getting confirmation the person got it... just... it's NOT good for artists and I know a lot of fursuit makers are going to suffer because of it... So this is really helpful
Venmo is a new option that has come up in the past few years. Google Wallet transfers immediately for me. I've used Google wallet for multi-thousand dollar transactions with no issue. Instant transfer to my bank account.
Venmo is owned by PayPal as far as I'm aware.
thanks for sharing your experience with Google Wallet! I love it, personally :)

would you consider adding https://commiss.io/ to this list if you ever update it!
it's a great site! small! connects directly to your debit cards and bank account! uses stripe but no need to sign up for a stripe account!
staff is super helpful and always around!
uses forms and invoices through the site
you can list your separate types of commissions & have your own profile example
it's super useful and its safer to use than paypal, they protect you from fraud and chargebacks more efficiently !

This information look nice but it takes a lot time to understand for me. Anyway can I repost this information to Furry Amino? 😃🐺
Yes, please share! And feel free to ask if you have any other questions.
My boyfriend and I use square and it is really great. The only problem is if you use the card reader you nead a more recent smart phone. My boyfriend use to use a Samsung Galaxy S4 and it would not work. You should not need to wory a bought it if you upgrade regularly but if you don't be careful.
I know this is quite an old submission, but I would like to give you a big THANK YOU!
I finally hit my limit with paypal's BS and I desperately needed an alternative. I appreciate the options i had laid out in front of me simply and to the point without someone trying to sell me crap on why I should choose their service.
