This new addition to my gallery is called "Learning To Let Go", and it completes an unofficial 'trilogy' with two songs I've already uploaded here in the last half-year. These three songs tell the story of my first significant relationship, back in 1992-3. Part 1, "If I Could", was written in the early days of the relationship, when everything was going great and the future looked bright. In Part 2, "There Are Times...", it's all fallen apart, and I'm in a world of hurt. Part 3, "Learning To Let Go", is the phoenix rising out of the ashes... me telling myself, "It's time to move on". I began writing it in February 1993, along with almost an entire album's worth of other songs inspired by the dissolution of my relationship with my ex. Guess I had some issues to work out lol.
There's not too much else to say about it, other than that it's a little bit of a departure from my usual sound. I knew I wanted it to be guitar-based, but I didn't anticipate it coming out sounding quite so country-ish. Please don't let that scare you off though... give it a listen. I quite like how it came out. I have my friend Rob to thank for playing all guitars on the song, and for helping me record it, but it was written by me alone (which explains its musical simplicity lol). It was recorded on a 4-track, so it sounds a little better than some of my stuff, but it's still kind of on the lo-fi side. This particular version is an edit of a slightly longer one which contains more music at the end. It's just repetition of the main tune though, and I felt it wasn't really necessary, so I trimmed it down. Who knows, if I ever make a CD of my stuff available, maybe people will get to hear the 'album' version lol.
I like the lyrics a lot, especially the last verse, but there is one thing that bothers me a little bit about this song: it's kind of a lie. Not that I meant for it to be one; when I wrote it, I meant every word. But in a lot of ways, I don't think I've ever moved on from the loss of my first love. Her ghost still haunts me (figuratively, not literally, of course :P ...) to this day. Thirteen years later, I'm still trying to learn to let go.
"Learning To Let Go" (4:11)
Written February 1993
Recording date unknown, probably 1993
Rob T. - guitars, drum programming
I've spent so long trying to hold on
And I don't wanna give up on you
But it's clear to see that you've already given up on me
And I can't deny it's true
I can feel the wheels spinning round and round, they are turning
I realize it may take a little time, but I'm learning
Oh... learning to let go
I still can't say that my love has gone away
But I think I've found a way to survive
I may never know exactly why you let me go
But I'm gonna keep on fighting for as long as I'm alive
I can feel the wheels spinning round and round, they are turning
I realize it may take a little time, but I'm learning
Oh... learning to let go
I know it isn't gonna happen overnight
There's still a long way to go
When I can put this in the past, I'll be alright
And once again, I will be ready to grow
And I still wish things had turned out differently
I still think we could've had it all
But I must get by, I won't live my life holding on to time
With my back against the wall
I can feel the wheels spinning round and round, they are turning
I realize it may take a little time, but I'm learning
Time will pass, I will find a way to stop the hurting
I realize it may take a little time, but I'm learning
Oh... learning to let go

OMG finally something that isn't techno, isn't "furry" in nature, and is genuinely a fucking good song.
Congrats. :)
Congrats. :)
Thank you so much for the comment and the fave! If you get a chance, check out some of my other tunes, none of which are techno or 'furry' in nature lol!
Thanks again! ^_^
Thanks again! ^_^
Hah, I can't say I've heard much of *anything* that's furry in nature. . . .
You should look up a mid-late 90's "furry music" gem called "Furry Art".
Yeah, I don't know that I've heard too much "furry" music on FA, but I've come across quite a bit in my travels. It's not every fur's cup of tea, and some of it can be a little over the top, but there's some good stuff out there.
I'll admit, I'd like to write at least one "furry" song, but it just hasn't quite come to me yet.

I would also like to write a furry song. But I dunno how I'd do it without it coming out corny. Besides, I can't write lyrics anyway. >.<
Yeah, I've only gotten as far as coming up with an *idea* for a furry song. Truth be told though, the lyric (what I have of it, anyway) is ambiguous enough that it could mean something to almost anybody... but maybe a little something extra to furs. I may never finish it, though... seems to be the trend lately. O_O
It's a cool song! You should try and record it again with modern day technology =)
Thanks, Fox! A compliment on a musical submission means a little something extra, coming from someone as musically talented as yourself! ^_^
As for the 'modern day technology'... yeah, I'd like to give that a try lol. Don't know when that might happen, though. I don't have the aforementioned technology, or the $$$ to get it.

This is a groovy song, cuzzin. =^_^= And Foxamoore is right.
Thanks, Kattywampus! And Foxamoore is *always* right lol.
I forgot to hit submit on this comment earlier, hehe. For a 4 track it sounds like it was put together pretty well. There must have been some track bouncing going on :) I like the harmonies as it nears the end, and you're reminding me again of lou barlow with the way your voice is reserved - it makes it sound authentic.
Yeah, my friend Rob, who was at the controls for this, knew what he was doing. I think he has some better equipment now. We could probably record some kick-ass stuff together, but he never has the time for it anymore (he has since started a family of his own).
But I might just have a new collaborative project in the works... too early to say anything about yet, but I'm hopeful. :)

Oh, and thanks for the Lou Barlow comparison again! Truth be told, though, if my vocals are 'reserved', it's mostly due to me not being confident enough to really belt a song out lol... plus, in this case, lack of experience singing into a microphone.
Thanks! I can't take credit for the guitar playing, that was my friend. He was also at the controls during recording (it was his equipment, I didn't/don't have any), so he gets the blame for the 'major pan' on the vocals too LOL... j/k. It was *my* final say on what I thought sounded good, but I don't have a lot of experience with that kind of thing, so my ear's not trained. I have to say though, that I'm about as satisfied with this as I am with pretty much anything I've done. Thanks for listening, commenting, and especially for +faving! ^_^
Hey, it's me again. :D
Either this doesn't sound country at all, or I've become such a fan of southern alt-rock that I can't tell the two apart anymore. Either way, it's really great!

Ha! ^_^ Well, let's just say that it sounds closer to country than anything else I've ever done, then... although I can't say it was intentional. Thanks so much for you recent watch, comments and faves. They were a really nice surprise to get tonight. ^_^
