It so you can have depth of field so you know if it short long. one pariscope you loose alot of that

submarines have range markers on there parascopes, and sense they are not fireing in ballistic trajectories it is not as needed

It was simple there depth plus estimated distances. yet it still was a straight line shot to the target.. and they just shot more then one normaly in a spread

Ones like this also had simple mechanical calculators, shot placement would just refine things. Periscopes and tank/rifle sights and such were marked by arc length, by having a good idea of how tall someone was, or how long a ship was gave you good info on the range.

one issue I have and it a nit pick is the spikes on the planting legs. how would you train it right to left then, you would need to pull it up train it then put it back down

It's a mid/long range artillery piece(from a mice perspective, of course), the base allows for some movement on the horizontal axis.

I see that and can understand you dont need much for long range. Yet does the dampners handle all the recoil. Or would it just dig itself into the ground?

Well, you can imagine that the whole base is railed and the dampeners handle the whole recoil business (that also justifies the small horizontal movement range). I got inspiration from some early WWI french artillery pieces, which started to use hidraulic dampeners instead of pneumatic and spring based ones.

Nicely done. I'm impressed with the design on the field piece, and the image gives me the crazy idea of if this was built as a 1:1 inch scale model diorama, would the soldiers be like 3 inches high, or larger? Just a thought.

It was designed for trench warfare. In that case, it's similar to a periscope for looking over the edge of the trench without exposing the soldier.
