“I swear, you’ll be the death of me!”
Chester said nothing, letting himself being pulled up into his room. Specifically, the bedroom.
“Can’t leave you even for a moment! One eye away, and you already off into the woods, stealing from those who earned their money!” exclaimed Madam Cheshire, a decrepit old cat-lady, and the head of the orphanage.
“I ought to whip you like a rug with a racket, but I am afraid that will be seen as too harsh. Pffeh, I think I will do it next time.”
He was pretty sure she said something like that a thousand times already. She never really did anything of the sort, but listening her berating wasn’t that much better. The other kids peeked from the neighboring room, watching as the resident “Troublemaker” was pulled once again into his room. No one said anything lest she hears them. But then again, her hearing has been worsening, just like her eyesight.
A handful of the bravest ones followed them up the stairs. Maybe because they were curious, or wanted to take a quick laugh at him. Chester for sure didn’t care.
“Once you get old enough, if you ever leave this place, I am sure I’ll see inside a prison cell the next day!” Tugging by his shirt, she pulled him on top of his bed which was situated away from the door and windows, “Now don’t you even think of getting out for the rest of the day!”
Turning around on her heels, the headmaster angrily stomped out of the room, and slammed the door behind her.
“Chester got into trouble again.” He could hear few voices from the outside. “He always gets in trouble.” “You think his mom or dad were criminals?”
If he were to be honest, Chester did not care. Never cared the first time he heard it, and won’t care if he’ll hear it one-hundredth time. He never really cared about becoming Madame’s favorite. Although, he also found it annoying being referred as “The Troublemaker”.
With that said, he was honestly feeling quite good about things, actually. Now that he knew of a way to escape the town, he just needed to find better time to do it again. Looking forward to what he could come up tomorrow, Chester climbed out of his bed and went to get his satchel.
Opening the doors slowly, he quickly checked the hallway, before finding, once again, that it was hanging on the wall. Smirking to himself, he silently tiptoed towards where it was hanging, and was about to pull it down, only to notice something strange. The bag was made of cloth instead of leather now, with a rope being used as its strap. What happened to my satchel? Hearing a creaking noise and somebody running by, making him stop wasting time and immediately run back to his room.
Checking the bag’s contents, he found that it only had one object within it, a long black sash with rows of knives on them. Actually, it was more accurate to call them daggers, is what Chester figured. Wondering what these daggers were, Chester took one out and examined it slowly: short, palm-sized, with a blue-colored jewel on its base. He compared it to others, and found them also wearing colored jewels, though theirs were brighter.
He suddenly heard the noise again, this time it was Madam Cheshire yelling at everyone downstairs. He threw the bag under the bed frame, far enough to not be seen, and just went to bed. The little hedge-boy was unsure of what these objects were, of where his original satchel went to, and to whom these things actually belonged to. Lying on the side quietly, the boy reassessed his plans for tomorrow to get a new satchel first, before any further steps necessary to take.
Little did he know…
…
Somewhere, down in the dark place, not far from where they boy slept, but away from unsuspecting eyes.
“So, when’s ED supposed to come?” One whispered.
“Dunno, now fetch me some berries already!” The other growled. “Ahh, nothing like bathing in the beautiful rays of the this beautiful, big white moon.”
The former picked a bag of berries they had with them.
“…So, do you think the boss will like the ‘gift’?”
“…BUBON, yes, he will LOVE our ‘gift’. You do remember, what specifically our boss asked us to get right? Remember when he said ‘find and retrieve the daggers’? Well, that’s our gift! We found the daggers, put it in the bag, and now ED will deliver them to him and we will be praised as the highest praise a soldier of darkness could get.
Oh, maybe he will even promote us! Hehe. Now would you stop stalling and get me my berries, I’m starving!”
“Oh yeah, he did said that! Boy, he sure will get angry once he find out though. Er, one with blueberry or blackberry?”
The latter of the two stood up to eye at the former.
“…What do you mean, never got it?”
“Well, we gave him another bag. It belonged to that kid, you know the one. I think he got ours by mistake. So which one you want?”
“……………………..
….Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, WAIT! We got the WRONG ONE?”
“Yeah.”
“WHY DIDN’T YOU SAY SO!?”
“Well you told me to send this one to ED, so I did. Gee, wonder how boss will react to it.”
“……………..WE GOT TO GO GET MOVING STAT!!!!”
Both left in a hurry. What shall this bring this time…
