I am making a futuristic cyberpunk soldier/mercenary costume for the upcoming ACFI con in early October to go with this year's theme. I started off with a broken toy gun that was jammed. I normally fires these foam balls but I didn't need it as the mods I plan would make it impossible to shoot. So I gutted the insides as much as I can while leaving the trigger group and whatnot.
I then painted it using a trick I saw from a YouTube video where the prop maker used this special paste over certain areas over a silver base coat. Then the final paint applied over that. Once dried, the top coat was rubber off where the paste was to reveal the silver underneath. It gave that worn look to the prop.
I didn't have that special paste so I began to think up substitutes. I first thought about using Vaseline but that was petroleum based and could interfere with the paint. Maybe toothpaste would work as it is water based. I ended up using this gel I found in the medicine cabinet. Worked out great.
I used the gel around the edges where wear would make sense like in the video. I might have went a little overboard but I still like how it turned out. I used a silver paint called Bright Aluminum with a basic flat black overcoat. I really wanted a dark grey but once again, Home Depot didn't have any dark enough so I went with basic black.
The gel did its job, allowing the silver to show through after the buffing with a paper towel. The edges of the black gives it that chipped off look quite convincingly.
I have the gun taken apart to show both sides. I plan to do a lot more to it but it is a good start I think.
