This year I've started to return most of my focus to traditional media, specifically watercolor! I love digital work, but lately I've been feeling a bigger connection to traditional media. I've started prepping my painting surfaces by mounting the watercolor paper onto wood panels which has been a game changer because the paper does NOT wrinkle and warp! I've also been working larger than 5x7 - with most of my pieces not at 12x16, 12x16 and 14x18 inches. I have really grown to working in these larger sizes and have found that with enough planning, I can create illustrations in watercolor with many of the same effects I've done with digital. But the real advantage is traditional has this...raw, texture to it that I've never felt I could capture in my digital pieces. Plus, having the original paintings to frame and hang has been pretty cool =]
This piece is based on the age old mythology of the dance between dragon and phoenix. I've had the idea for a while but never felt confident in trying to paint it, but if we don't try then it can never be done. I'm happy with the result!

This is gorgeous! This piece definitely highlights the reason why I love watercolors! Love the colors, along with their fading and darkening tones! Amazing dragon - I love the scales and the fin going along its back. The phoenix's feathers are stunning!
