How long you live is up to you. Try to make the best of it, while you’re here.
.
..
…
It was around middle of the day. No, maybe it was earlier. The outside was occupied by…”people”, busily going from one place to another. The place was undoubtedly that of the busy streets, one you get closer to the cities, full of bistros and huge buildings. It can get almost dizzying just how compacted everything is.
That said, one lonely person…”person”, had been standing out within this crowd of “people”. She was standing there, completely dazed, and lost in her train of thought.
It was as follows: Was I dreaming? Where am I? What is this place? Why can’t I wake up? Why does this feel real? I am definitely dreaming. But why am I questioning this so much? I can feel the air, my eyes are itching too……I just itched it, it felt real. Should I-
“Move away!”
The girl darted to the side, nearly ran over by an animal on a bicycle. A rather odd picture, isn’t it? And yet, that’s exactly all of what she saw now. Animals everywhere, each one, wearing clothes, fiddling with their “hands” and talking in human language.
This all was real.
But that can’t be.
The young girl then bumped into someone else.
“Hey watch it!”
The animal’s maw was big as her face, his teeth and tongue visible. He then moved away, his eyes were clearly furious, anger unhidden by his furry face. His ears stood upright, holding his little hat up, and his tail appeared from below his jacket.
These were animals.
Walking upright.
Acting human.
It can’t be real.
She then finally noticed a mirror. Despite inspecting it as much as she could, she couldn’t find herself anywhere on it. The crowd was dispersing, there was nothing hiding her. She should be out in the open. But she wasn’t. Instead, another animal person was reflected through that mirror.
The one who had short hair and wore unfamiliar set of clothes.
That can’t be her.
She moved her hand. The animal in the mirror did as well. She then moved it up to touch the ears, which were resting atop its head, all alert. She shivered a bit when she realized she could feel them.
“My, aren’t you interesting?”
The girl jumped back, since the voice came right from behind her. It was another animal, a slender dog, a male, with a trench-coat over shirt, tie and pants. He wore a set of sunglasses on himself, which were oddly designed compared to ones in the human world, as they apparently hugged around his head.
He kept staring at her, making her uncomfortable. She had to think to say something fast. Even if it’s a dream, just say something. But what can you say? Shouldn’t you already have said it?
“Everything wrong?”
His voice came out perfectly human, yet it couldn’t look anymore wrong. The shape, the movement of his “face”, these weren’t things that supposed to happen with someone wearing an animal’s mug for a head. And besides, his question wasn’t even correct way to say it.
She finally decided to respond.
“Sorry.”
She wanted to run. To run away and get back home. She needed to go home now. She was about to dash, but a force pulled her back. Her hand was was held tightly in place.
“LET ME GO!” She panicked.
“Are you lost young man?”
Her immediate instinct was to send her foot in-between his legs and land square in his nuts. The force it went through was enough to actually make him skip upwards for a bit.
“…That…hurts…”
The animal man then bent down on all fours, his grip clearly lost. She immediately ran as far as she could without looking back
It was far too real. She felt anger, she felt exhaustion, there was also pain from kicking him still on her leg, and she already felt hot enough to actually start breathing heavily. It was all real.
Slowing down, she turned around a corner at an alleyway and leaned against the wall. It was all dawning at her. There was no way it was possible now, could it? She was supposed to go out, enjoy outside time with her dog, they leaned against the tree…Her brother was even supposed to come home earlier from work, and she had plans about making a small celebration. They wouldn’t see each other as much, and it was great when they could have an actual family dinner. She even had her friend come over and teach.
It was then the hunger pang struck.
She definitely felt hungry, without a doubt. Also depressed, to the point of crying. How could this really happen? Where was home? Where were familiar fields and smell of strawberries in her backyard? Will she ever meet her loved ones again?
She noticed one of the animals enter a café on the opposite side of the street. “Stardust” it was called. She sighed, trying to gather herself together. As far as she knows, she somehow got to an “alternate” earth. Something weird was happening, but before she could figure it out, she at least needed to fill her own stomach. Or maybe find a place to stay. Just imagine, maybe it was a dream this whole time?
She checked her pockets, from pants that never belonged to her and found few things, much to her surprise. A letter, some money and even ID. On that ID, the face of a dog was printed, right next to it having information like name (Monna Volkmann), age (16), sex (female), date of birth and other. It had completely matched to who she really was. The young girl, Monna, was completely surprised about having this, and it caused her to come up with even more slew of questions. But first, food.
The aroma of grinded coffee hit as soon as she entered, and an unfamiliar, but presumably modern pop music was playing within the building. The atmosphere was almost normal, if it weren’t for the fact that there was no real human within the room. She carefully walked up to the counter and met with the cashier, whose head was a cat. A cat, wearing topless cap whose cute ears stuck out right on top of it. Monna tried not to pay attention to them and ordered a coffee and a donut.
“Comin’ right up.” The cat answered with a voice of a young girl.
The whole thing then proceeded as normal, the cat telling her co-worker to get the coffee while she took care of strawberry donut. Monna actually noticed how little variation there was with the species: cats and dogs. They were colorful, just a bit, but mainly those types. The cashier returned with her donut, to which Monna reached and then suddenly jolted. She had yet to get used to seeing that hand as hers. Trying not to bring any more attention, she grabbed it and went for the coffee, all the while to the cat who was standing there, confused.
When she moved to the pick-up desk she noticed a man…animal…standing near it. It was in fact the same guy from earlier, whom she kicked in the nuts. Monna slowed down and was about to turn the other way, when her coffee order came in and he proceeded to grab it.
“Thank you so much! Yes, I am Monna, how did you know?” He chirped in a delighted tone.
“Hey!” Monna didn’t even register herself at first, and immediately regretted it. She now had his full attention.
“My, do I know you?” He asked. Monna wasn’t exactly sure about the question. “You seem frazzled?” The dog-man noted. He proceeded to take her coffee with him.
“That’s mine…” She stated. Has he really forgotten who she was? Was he trying to lead her on?
He turned around on his heels, in very loose manner. His whole behavior reminded of a drunken dog.
“May I ask, are you lost?”
“…Why?”
“According to your card, your street is right around the corner here.” He pointed right behind her. He then promptly took a seat from nearby table and pushed the coffee to the side. “If I’m being honest, I find myself quite interested for some propositions.”
Monna kept staring at him.
“Did you just read my card?”
“I glanced, nothing too interesting. With that said…” he pulled out a flask and took a sig from it, before putting it away. Monna’s mouth drew agape. “Would you like some?”
“No.”
“It’s warm milk.” He noted with a smile.
Monna’s eyebrows furrowed. What exactly was the guy trying to do? She took the flask, very carefully, and inspected it. Warm milk. She put it down, and he promptly hid it away. He then pointed to the seat opposite of him, available and with her coffee. He had reserved it for her, it seems.
“Come now, sit,” he kept suggesting. Monna continued standing. “Don’t you wish to become a secretary?” He asked matter-of-factly.
“…What?”
“I find people interesting, and I have little to no real way to assist with my work. I’d rather speak face-to-face anyway instead of relying on some online thingamabob. Your salary will be pretty hefty, you don’t have to worry, as for when you should-“
“Ok, who are you, why did you follow me and why are you trying to hire me…for a secretary?” She mouthed last one, still confused.
“I am Dex. I was interested, and felt like you needed help.” He answered in rapid succession. Well, he wasn’t wrong. ”You may begin tomorrow – or now, it depends – and If you would like it, you can even have keys to my office. I have another spare one I’d rather get rid off anyways.”
Monna continued to side-eye him.
“You seem to have a problem, then , don’t you? Please tell me, then perhaps I could help you out as we work together,”
“What makes you say I have a problem?”
“An apartment complex has only recently been built and only recently has property been sold. By itself, it means little, but they only posted yesterday and you had already booked a place, meaning you didn’t come here. Most of the things you are wearing are completely new, based on no amount of wear and tear on you, and even your wallet looks brand new. I can tell that it may even have new scent. I also assume by your reactions to everything, you aren’t from this place, no?”
Monna raised an eyebrow. She never thought of these things. She only now noticed how new her clothes were.
“I am a detective by trade,” He suddenly mentioned. “A private one. And one many enjoy hanging around with. And trust me, you would find me useful in learning exactly what happened to you. Also, I am looking for something to do for fun.”
“Ok.” Monna finally sat down. She then noticed him pull out a container with food, in this case soup, and he began to eat from it. This “guy” was clearly an odd job. Though it wouldn’t hurt to look into it for more. “So, you are a detective? What exactly do you do?”
“Murder cases, homicides, why ask?”
“It’s just, I dunno if you can help me unless I…” Monna stopped, noticing “Dex” raising his finger.
He then suddenly checked his watch. “Before I can diagnose that, I believe there’s something else we should do first.”
“What do you-“
She heard someone scream. Animal people nearly ran her over as they scurried away from one spot. Monna herself had hard time realizing what happened. That is, until she heard someone mentioned about corpse. Dex promptly stood up.
“Consider this your interview.”

She heard someone scream. Animal people nearly ran her over as they scurried away from one spot. Monna herself had hard time realizing what happened. That is, until she heard someone mentioned about corpse. Dex promptly stood up.
“Consider this your interview.”
