Come Spy With Me
Come Spy With Me
A Fake Album Cover
Wilson G. Bear
In 1966, Hugo Montenegro recorded an LP album entitled Come Spy with Me. It was theme music from espionage-oriented motion pictures and television, arranged by Montenegro and performed by his orchestra. I do own a copy of it, but honestly, I'm not overly impressed.
I thought about it and realized I had tracks by the original artists for eight out of eleven tracks. I liked the playlist, so I recreated it with original recordings. Amazon had two; I had to purchase the third as a 7-inch 45 RPM on eBay.
The music sorted, I needed a cover. Back to Paint Dot Net with some stock photos. I recall I had to remove the red-eye from the eyes, but PDN has a feature for that. The font for the main title is just called Stencil; I can't seem to find the other font anywhere on my machine; a pain, because I kind of like it. The text was laid out in separate layers for each color and purpose (Main Yellow, Main Orange, et cetera).
Here is the playlist in text, although it's on the cover itself:01: Secret Agent Man - Johnny Rivers
02: I Spy - Earle Hagen
03: The FBI - Bronisław Kaper
04: Thunderball - Tom Jones
05: The Silencers - Vikki Carr
06: Get Smart - Irving Szathmary
07: Come Spy with Me - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
08: Goldfinger - Shirley Bassey
09: The Spy Who Came in from the Cold - Sol Kaplan
10: Our Man Flint - Jerry Goldsmith
11: The James Bond Theme (Dr. No) - John Barry; Vic Flick; John Scott
12: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. - Jerry GoldsmithI know there are 12 tracks, not the eleven in the Montenegro disk. I added one; see if you can suss it out. If you would like to use the cover, feel free.

My bet is on the Get Smart theme. He'd be the goofy kid dancing with himself off by the punch bowl.
If you mean the spare track, it was Jerry Goldsmith's Man From U.N.C.L.E. If you mean me dancing with myself, I's probably die of timidity first...
Naw...if you remember the prom scene in "Back To The Future," George McFly was dancing all alone while waiting for Marty and Lorraine to show up. And looking like a total dweeb, too. Kind of like what Maxwell Smart would look like dancing to the "Get Smart!" theme.

Heh. Reminds me of an idea from a few years ago.
Ever hear of Cowboy Action Shooting Sports? Basically a Western themed "Hogan's Alley" sort of thing.
What I wanted to do was Espionage Action Shooting Sports, with everyone in black tie using PPKs. UNCLE Specials, Lugers and so on. The course of fire would include shaking a tail on foot, martini mixing, enemy agent seducing, shooting down model helicopters with a take down rifle, R/C car chases and so forth.
Sound like fun?

Man! Could I get into that! CASS has it's limitations, but one of the shooters I saw a few years back was big, built and blonde! Unfortunately, she's recently added 'Mom' to her résumé...
Cool collection.
I was (and sort of still am) a big Bond fan, so I know the Goldfinger tune. Not sure if you are familiar with the Propellerheads, they did a song a ways back called "History Repeating" on which Shirley Bassey was featured.

Shirley Veronica Bassey, Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE) has an incredible vocal range, color and depth. I think, after more than 50 years, that the theme from Goldfinger is the worst thing she ever sang. Not a reflection on the quality of her voice, but the material -- lyrics and melody -- were utter trash. As an instrumental, it's not too bad-- John Barry, after all -- but Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley have both written much better lyrics. Dame Shirley has certainly worked with better!
