Glidden's Song (Papa Glitchin Mix) [Kiffa vs. grapeFruitB...
Surprise! I'm breaking a long silence to add an audio file to my gallery for the first time in 12 years!
It's not exactly new per se, but you haven't really heard it before, either. Back at the very end of 2006, I uploaded an old song of mine from 1993, called "Glidden's Song". Written and recorded with one of my friends at the time, it was about another friend of ours whose parents still tried to control his every move, even though he was 23 at the time of the song's writing (a slightly more detailed explanation can be found in the link to the original song above).
After I uploaded the song, grapefruitbat (then going by a different user name) got in touch with me and asked if he could do a mix of it. I was surprised and honored that someone would want to do that with one of my songs, and of course said yes. The original version of his mix, which can be found here, was uploaded in 2008.
Cut to last week. I was going through the contents of an old hard drive when I came across grapeFruitBat's mix, and heard it for the first time in several years. I'd forgotten that he didn't use any of the vocals-- I kept waiting for the lyrics to come in lol! So I decided to see if I could layer the original version over grapeFruitBat's remix in a way that would (hopefully) sound like they were there all along. It was slightly challenging, because the original song was recorded live, without a metronome or click track, so the tempo is imperfect. I had to keep readjusting the track to keep the vocals in time with the beat that grapeFruitBat laid down. But it was good practice for me. I don't have a lot of experience using music recording/editing programs, but for years I've watched in wonder as sedge has worked his magic on our dramaarmada tracks, and hoped that one day I might learn one twentieth of what he knows.
I pared grapeFruitBat's eight-and-a-half minute track down by a few minutes, and added a few effects in a couple of places-- most notably at the beginning, which I wanted to come in thundering. The end result may be far from perfect, but I'm happy with it. So, with grapeFruitBat's permission, here it is. I don't know if this will be the start of an era of renewed activity on this account, or just a one-off. I never intended to be done with making music, I just haven't had the right conditions for creating it in a while. I still hope that at some point in the future, whether it be near or far, that I will have new material to share.
I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe in these bizarre times.
(P.S.: Yes, that's Glidden in the thumbnail lol.)

Hey, Papa Glidden
You keep your emotions hidden
In your Bronco, with your baseball cap
And your blue jeans... yes, those blue jeans
I know you don't like me, but that's just too bad
When I hang out with your son, it makes you mad
You tell him that he's gotta be in by 1
Your whole life is spent tryin' to spoil his fun
Papa Glidden
When are you gonna see?
Papa Glidden
You've got to set him free
Hey, Mama Glidden
You keep your emotions hidden
In your classroom, with your blackboard
And erasers, and your ABC's
Won't you tell me please, what you're thinkin'
When you're teachin' kids about Abe Lincoln?
Don't you know you've got two kids of your own?
What will you do when the birds have flown?
Mama Glidden
When are you gonna see?
Mama Glidden
You've got to set him free

I was expecting a funny song about paint. XD
Strange, but 'imperfect' DIY tracks like this have really made a comeback in the last decade. You're cutting edge with this!

Um... does it count that I put the thumbnail together in MS Paint? 'Cause I totally did. :P
Thanks for the comment! It's nice to know that I can be cutting-edge and completely out of touch at the same time. :)
