Continuing the Emma And Ash sketchbook.
Continuing with story stuff. This is the only sketchbook page from chapter 4. The dialouge would make clear that the upper part of picture with Emma is happening at a different time and camera angle from the lower part of pic - Ash replying after a silence . So sort of looks like a one panel page, but etc.
So what happened to chapters 2 and 3 ?
CH2
"The Bridge" was the only page in the sketchbook from chapter 2 - during that chapter Governor Dellins tries to turn Ash's suspicions that Emma has caused the plague that is killing the coyote village and his daughter Teesha . Ash tells Dellins that the illness is from the underworld - that only his northern wolf clan know about the underworld and can read and speak the ancient language. Dellins tells Ash that Emma had told him all about it - and that if he and Ash team up they can find the entrance to the underworld and save Teesha and the coyote village. As that chapter goes on it becomes clear that what Dellins actually wants underworld technology and weapons if they exist. Dellins has been recalled to the fox homeland with his older brother coming to replace him, and Dellins has no intention of losing his own personal kingdom. Ash refuses to help with tech or weapons...and when Ash's ex-girlfriend shows up he becomes expendable. Dellins shoots him and he is tossed off the bridge down to a dry riverbed and left to die.
CH3
There is no page in the sketchbook (yet) from chapter 3. Emma is trying to find a cure for Teesha. She's managed to bring down her fever and stabilizer her, but that's all. She remembers reading about the new revelations about germs, microbes, etc - and so gets her "new" microscope ( it arrived over a year ago, but Emma has been depressed and apathetic for years, so never even un-boxed it). Looking at Teesha's blood at the highest magnification she sees something very strange - she wants to talk to Ash about it. She goes to Dellin's office where his secretary and her friend, Hestaphia, informs her that Dellins told her that Ash had given up and just left. Emma immediately knows that isn't right. - Cut to Ash regaining consciousness. He manages to plug the bullet wounds. One leg is severely sprained, the other ankle might be broken, and he has a concussion. The bridge is too high up to reach. He remembers that there is a farm a few miles away and so starts limping and crawling that direction. - Emma gets her secretary Walker and Hestaphia to search north and south while she searches east. Having searched the beach, she is about to enter the Tiger Guard's private hunting forest when she is stopped by Chaser, the young bobcat boy that Aah saved from hanging in chapter 1. Chaser warns her that it's death to go into that forest - that Dellins sends criminals and natives in there to be hunted, and that she's likely searching the wrong direction. Chaser has been hiding and keeping an eye on Ash since ch1, and the last time he saw him Ash and Dellins were heading to the western farm lands. - Cut to Ash trying to scale the banks of the dry riverbed to the farm - only to find it surrounded by a tall barbwire fence that goes on as far as he can see. - Emma and Chaser ride her horse to the west inter-cut with the Tiger Guard stopping Walker and beating him near to death - Hestaphia hears about it and confronts them but being Dellins secretary doesn't make her safe and they beat her up too. - Ash is out of time and options, losing too much blood, so he attempts to climb the barbwire fence. Near the top he fails and becomes hopelessly entangled and weak - his dying thoughts are that he has failed Teesha, the coyote village that was counting on him to find a cure, and that he has so misjudged Emma and can never apologize. He looses consciousness while bleeding out, feeling an utter failure for having failed and hurt so many people. - It's around midnight when Emma and Chaser ride up to the bridge and follow the trail of blood to find Ash still barely alive hanging from the barbwire.
CH4
Ash awakens in Emma's country side "cabin" (a rather luxurious house built by an eccentric colonist fifty years ago). Over a few days Emma nurses Ash back from the brink of death, Ash confesses his failure, they are reconciled. Emma tells Ash about what she saw in the microscope, etc. Then, in the middle of one night, Dellins troops show up outside her cabin, announcing their presence with gun shots. Emma runs outside fearing that they have come to kill Ash. But they have no idea he's there - they have come to collect Emma as Dellins has found the entrance to underworld and wants a scientist/doctor in his expedition. Ash secretly follows them.

Trad inks with a bit of digi editing - Emma was too short in the original- trying to crowd stuff into 9 x 12 inches - will post the original to scraps eventually.

Whoa, this is a really intricate and well-done drawing! Very nice scene.
This is getting close to style i want for the graphic novel - some elements from the other pics. i know it seems a bit absurd to take so long developing a story/style - but it will take two to three years to do the pages and i won't likely have time to re-do them if i have second thoughts. So taking a long to time to figure out the graphics for a story written over twenty years ago ? It has to be the right the first time - none of this countless revision stuff that i tend to do. - So from page one to page 120 or page 200 - it all has to be consistent in style and quality. i set that as my goal for this tale way back, so i knew it would be a long term project.
Yeah I can dig it - that's hard to change things up after a lot of work in. This is going to be so awesome!
There is some violence in the final chapters, some deaths, and some long term consequences for the world.

Seems appropos. Hard to believe it's been forty years next month, eh?

I was working for Universal Records Distribution in Philadelphia at the time. As you can imagine, we couldn't keep that album (or any Beatles album) in stock...and we were processing pallet-loads of "Double Fantasy" returns a couple of months later. ;)
sketch? my goodness, but the amount of detail in this is incredible...

It's a sketchbook - and most of the original sketches were rough pencil. Then i started inking some of the old pages because one of the aims of the sketchbook was to come up with an inking style for the series. From mid 2016 i started inking more of the old pages and penciling and inking new pages as a way to revisit old designs and ramp-up to starting in on the actual pages...which was supposed to have started last January - but ..........
