Continuing the Emma And Ash sketchbook.
Big dose of story stuff in yesterday's post - saving the final chapters for final week of November posts. So a few ornamental posts to round out this week's sketchbook buried treasures.
Astute fans ... that is fans that have way too much free memory - will recognize this pic as related to this pic :

There are three pages in the sketchbook next to each other where i was working out Emma's facial proportions - in the previous one (later coloured) she still wasn't quite right. i think i made a copy of that page (?) to put under this page to see a bit of inking through to pencil new version of her in her field-work outfit (which she was wearing when she met ash, and dons again for Dellin's expedition to the the underworld). Third pic is a profile will get to that in a day or two.
The pencil of this was slouching around for a decade or more. i started doing new inks and pencils in the sketchbook in '15 or '16 ? And the final inks on this were done December 31st 2016.
Side note re outfit. i was thinking of sort of typical colonial tropical explorer outfits - khakis - with shorts. Later i realized this was sort of Lara Croft gear, and found later that this sort of outfit was worn by a female fox explorer in an episode of Rescue Rangers. Face-palm.

I hear ya on the similarities of Emma's outfit to those of Lara Croft and the female explorer on Rescue Rangers. Think of it like an homage of sorts.
Seeing it more like a bell curve - my influence was from 1920s National Geographic magazines - some of that historic style came up in Raiders Of The Lost Ark leading to "Tomb Raider" - which added a bit of 1930's "pulp" fantasy to that, ...... and i'm guessing the Chip and Dale episode was referencing the earliest Tomb Raider game.
Those eyes! What a wonderful, pleasant portrait!
A good deal of the development sketches were done set during Emma and Ashes brief love affair seven years before the story starts...i had to know their back stories, how they felt about each other.... and it sort of sucked to see how much their break-up hurt them and and how painful it was them to be re-united during the first half of the story ... and then the end becomes difficult again.
There was one version early on where they were both gunned down by the Tiger Guard at the end ala this "

but i remembered reading an interview with Miyazaki where he said an early version of Nausicca had her dying (rather than the Ohmu healing scene), but he realized that he couldn't do that to his audience - that there is so much tragedy in the world already.... So no death scene - but they do get put through hell.

One could find themselves being lost in those eyes.
Happier times, seven years before the story starts - their personal 'summer of love' as it were.
