Valentine’s day, the day where couples come together and do something special. I woke up long before my alarm could go off. It was early in the morning. Before anyone was awake, I got up and did my business before leaving for my morning workout with Asher.
I tripped on the box that sat in front of my door, tumbling forward and landing hard with a heavy thud. My ears perked up, keen on checking that I hadn’t woken the entire hall up. “Ugh, what was that?” I groaned as I sat up and felt what I had tripped over. I grabbed the box and returned to my room.
Inside the box was a simple outfit, matching the one I was given on the day I had my injection. It already felt like so long ago. Nothing about how I looked indicated the person I used to be. Where I once was a slender human man, now stood an imposing crocowolf. Deep down I could tell that something about how I think had changed. I was still me, but now I was a version of me with confidence that seemed to grow by the day.
I decided to leave the simple outfit behind and wear it after my workout. Asher show up for this morning’s workout, leaving me to avoid anything that would require someone to spot me. The entire time I was the only one in the sharp artificial light of the gym. Usually, there were a few other beast-folk around. Was something special happening today? After about an hour of working out in silence, I wandered back to the dorms and began my morning grooming routine.
Like the gym, the showers were eerily empty. I was alone in the large empty rooms. The quiet humming of the lights did little to calm my growing nerves. I showered and dried quickly before rushing up to my room to finish grooming my fur.
The grooming kit was really nice, brushes and combs gliding through my fur and lightly scratching the skin underneath in just the right way. My nerves melted away as my tail thumped the floor in a steady rhythm. A satisfied smile spread across my muzzle as I leaned back in the desk chair.
After a moment of content silence, I checked my VitaWatch. It was still early, but what caught my eye was the date: February 14th. It was Valentine’s Day! Since today was a holiday, I decided to style my fur a little. The body fur can’t do much beside brushing out the knots, so I focused on the hair style part. It took a while, so long in fact that I started to hear others in my hall waking up.
I managed to style my hair into the same mock pompadour that Fynn had given me a few days ago. Satisfied with my work, I grinned and lightly patted the poof of fur. I looked to the clothes on my bed, the simplistic colors and design left much to be desired, but they were significantly better than the robes had been.
I carefully pulled the shirt on over my head. I almost didn’t notice the small, rubber lined holes on the back. My spines fit perfectly through them, snug and comfy. My pants had an extra hole and strap along the backside of the pants to wrap around my tail. It was a bit cumbersome to try to button up behind me, but I managed to do it.
The clothes were a little tight on my frame. The tight hug on my body felt comforting, not to mention confident given how the tighter fit of the clothes accentuated my large frame. I carefully zipped up the front zipper and gave myself a final once-over. With a smile and a wink, I trotted off to breakfast.
I chose to eat a breakfast of waffles and sausages. When I got my food, the waffle was shaped like a heart! Not long after I sat down to eat, I saw Fynn walk into the cafeteria and get in line for food. He had something in his hand, but I couldn’t tell what.
When he sat down with his food, he fiddled with whatever was in his hands. He sat across from me, a sheepish smile on his muzzle. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Ryker!” He pulled out the object. It was a pink envelope with the words To: Ryker written on it. “Here’s a little something I put together for you.” He broke I contact as he handed it over.
The envelope was lumpy, like there was a weirdly pop-up card in there or maybe something else. I tore the paper open with a claw. Inside was a simple card and a small metal object.
It was a necklace. I pulled it out, taking a closer look at it. While it was small compared to how big I was now, the necklace would have been HUGE for a human. It was shiny, almost silver in appearance. The chain looked like a mini version of actual chains for heavy duty pulling. The pendant portion was round and flat, like a coin. One side was featureless while the other was a cross of a sewing needle and a whisk. Just below the embossed tools sat three characters: F & R.
“It’s so cool! Why did you get me something so nice? How did you get something so quickly for me? It hasn’t even been a week!”
“Read the card.” He replied slyly. I turned back to the envelope and pulled out the card. It looked like a normal and stereotypically cheesy Valentine’s card. I opened it up. My eyes jumped straight to the handwritten message at the end.
Hey, I know you haven’t been here long, but I wanted to get you a little Valentine, so you don’t feel left out…
But, during our first day together, I knew you were someone I wanted to know better than just mentor and mentee…. I wanted to maybe push a little farther. After the meet and greet, I pulled Asher aside and asked him to make a pendant necklace for me to give to you.
I heard that you’re interested in sewing, so I asked him to put a sewing needle into the design. The whisk represents me. I definitely take after my family name! I enjoy baking and making treats for my friends and stuff. I’ll have to make something for you soon!
Anyway,
Would you be my Valentine?
Fynn Baker
I read the note silently, stealing glances at the pendant he had given me. “Yes. It would be awesome to be your Valentine, Fynn!” I smiled as I slid around the table to give him a big bear hug. I leaned into him, resting my head on his shoulder.
It felt like time had stopped. Like this moment was ours and no one could take it. I don’t know how long we were hugging. I just remember him pulling away and reaching into my palm for the pendant. “Would you mind if I put this on you?” He asked. I didn’t need to open my eyes to know he was grinning his signature grin. I nodded and turned around so he could latch the necklace on.
Fynn lifted the pendant over my head and around my neck, his strong arms brushing against my fur. It rest at the top of my sternum, shining proudly against the simple outfit I had on. My tail began to thump behind me as Fynn finished latching the pendant into place.
I turned around with a wide grin. My eyes burned with tears of joy. Homestead was really starting to feel like home now.
My eyes drifted to a similar pendant around Fynn’s neck. His seemed older, worn from age. The face of his pendant was that of a beautiful compass, carved from the shiny metal.
“Thank you, Fynn!” I said, pulling him into another tight hug. “This really means a lot to me. I felt tears streaming down my face. I sniffled and squeezed my wolf tighter. After another moment, I pulled away and wiped the tears from my furry cheeks.
We finished our food quickly. “The Lover’s Fair should be open by now.” He said, checking his VitaWatch. He grabbed my hand as we walked through the doors and out to the outdoor area.
This was certainly an actual fair. While it wasn’t huge, there were more than enough booths to keep us occupied. Some had food, others had games with prizes, and there was a massive stage in the center of it all. A band of what looked like gen 1 subjects were playing live music, upbeat and peppy.
They were all dressed in glam rock-styled clothes with a punk flare. The singer was a fox, while the guitarists, both electric and base, were two different tigers. The drummer was a massive polar bear, while the one with the keytar was a black panther.
“Let’s play some games first!” I said, dragging him towards a booth on our left. We played a few games. Eventually, I won, earning a pink snake with red hearts all over its body. The tail had some kind of Velcro along its tail. I let it hang over my neck like a feather boa as we continued to peruse the fairgrounds.
Not long after I won my prize, Fynn won a game and received a matching white snake with red hears on it. It too had Velcro along its tail. Getting the picture, we stuck the snakes together and let them hang over both of our backs as we walked side by side with our arms around each other’s shoulder.
Soon enough, I was starting to feel a bit hungry again. “Hey, are you ready to try some of the food?”
He nodded his head enthusiastically, “Yeah! I’m pretty sure there’s a booth with canine safe chocolate around here!”
I cocked my head to the side in confusion. “That’s a thing?”
He nodded, “Intramorph has been making so many products over the course of this whole Project Corse thing. I think Intramorph is planning on cornering the entire market surrounding us beast-folk.”
We walked up to a booth with a variety of chocolate products and chocolate covered products. “Is this the booth with canine safe chocolate?” I asked.
The man nodded. “Yeah, all of the booths have foods that are altered or engineered for you beast-folk.” He sounded a bit grumpy as he said it, like he hated being here.
“Cool, can my buddy and I get some chocolate crèmes. I’ll get half a dozen of the coffee crème chocolates and…” Fynn looked to me. “What ones do you want?”
“Oh, I’ll take the dark orange crème ones.” I turned my gaze over to the man behind the booth. “How did you guys manage to make canine safe chocolates and other beast safe foods?”
He rolled his eyes and groaned. “I hate explaining it, but the gist is that Intramorph uses the flavor map of chocolate and infuses the artificially engineered flavor into a substance that is safe for you canines that also has properties similar to chocolate.”
“Artificial flavor?” I shrunk back a little.
“Don’t get your fur in a twist, idiot.” He snorted, “The flavor is generated from organic electrolytes that stimulate the primary flavors the tongue can register. Changing the combinations of those electrolytes lets the guys upstairs make anything taste like ANYTHING.”
I glared at him a moment, not enjoying his sour attitude. He handed over the chocolates as Fynn swiped his watch on a little screen.
We waved goodbye to him as we scanned the other food booths for something to eat for lunch, which was fast approaching. We landed at a booth with steaks and cubed fruit in the shape of hearts. We got our food and found a place to sit down and eat, watching the band play.
“It’s nice to eat outside.” I said. “It feels like food always tastes better outside and I don’t know why.”
Fynn smiled at me. “Yeah, but eat the food quickly before it cools. It IS still winter after all!”
I smiled and nodded. We quickly ate scarfed down our steaks and fruit. Fynn’s eyes lingered on the orange crèmes, sitting in my lap. “Do you want to trade one of your coffee crèmes for one of my orange ones?”
He grinned at me. “Of course. Want to feed each other?” I smiled back and nodded. We each grabbed one of our chocolate crèmes and held it out to the other’s snout.
It really smelled like chocolate! It looked the part too. I took the whole thing into my mouth and started chewing. The chocolate flavor was short lived as the more powerful coffee flavor of the crème took over. But the chocolate tasted genuine. “Oh my gosh! It really tastes like chocolate!” He smiled, still chewing his orange piece.
We quickly finished off our chocolates, listening to the band. Eventually they had revealed their name as Bestial Backbeat.
After we had our fill of the fair we wandered back inside. “Let’s head to my room.” Fynn said. Before I could respond, he pulled me towards the dorms and took me to his room on the first floor of the dorms.
His room was bigger than mine. It had a larger bed and a double vanity sink in his half bath. He had a shelf mounted on his wall full of cookbooks and other books about cooking. I spotted a few books that broke out of the food trend, but they were few and far between.
Fynn sat on the bed and patted the spot next to him. I took a seat as he stared at the floor. “Ryker, I need to ask you something.” He paused a moment. “Are you?” He gestured to himself and posed. “Gay?”
“Not quite,” His ears drooped, “Bi.” His ears perked back up.
“Which do you find more appealing?” He grinned.
It was my turn to look down. “I’ve always wanted to have kids someday…but I’ve always found the male physique more appealing to look at.” My face stretched into a small smile.
“Would you want to be…in a relationship with me? Like boyfriend and boyfriend?” His eyes seemed to grow as he pulled himself into a mock puppy dog face.
I nodded, “yeah, why not? But let’s take things slowly, okay?” He nodded.
“So, would you consider today your first date?” He grinned at me.
“Mmmm….” I wondered, “I think that every day with you has been a date!” I grinned back.
“I know you want to take it slow, but would you be okay if w—”
I pressed my snout into his, leaning further into his fluffy fur. He was shocked at first but quickly reciprocated, wrapping his arms around me.

Chapter 18: A Valentine for a Wolf

Okay, I've been meaning to ask this for a while, but where are all the lady furs?! The only female I recall seeing so far was one of the staff!
Wait till chapter 15. ;)
All will be explained.
But trust me there are more females in the staff here that we don't see because Ryker doesn't see them.
Also, since I'm not a female, I need more time to developed a character like that. But don't worry! I have a plan in mind! ;)
