Chapter 4
The next day, Sonic and friends continued their visit in Adventure Bay. Bit by bit, they weren’t feeling so weirded out by the mayor’s choice of a chicken as a pet kept in a purse, the fact that same chicken had a statue of herself, the fact there were dogs walking all fours that could talk, or the town’s history of being accident-prone. The townspeople actually were making better efforts to take care of themselves and not be so clumsy. Yet it seemed that in some cases, the PAW Patrol was needed more than ever (especially if the Turbots were the ones getting into a disaster).
The pups continued to act as the Mighty Pups, however, because Sonic had made an interesting observation when he and his team stopped by the Lookout. “Just as I am a blue hedgehog, you don the color blue, and you’re super fast as a superhero,” he had said to Chase. “You want to race?”
“Mighty Chase is ready to race!” Chase replied. The two then lined up at where the road just began to curve until it hit the bridge. Ryder took a position between the two and gave the starting commands: “On your marks, get set, go!” Both took off at supersonic speed on the word “Go,” and Skye was watching from the sky, as was Tails. The fox used binoculars to watch the action.
“They’re off to a good start,” he said.
“Now we’ll see who is true blue!” Skye giggled, referencing a joke Sonic had made earlier. The other pups giggled, and Cream the Rabbit’s pet Chao, Cheese, went, “Chao, chao!”
The pair raced around the town, following a set path Chase usually used to patrol the town, and the others set up a finish line for when the two came back. The townspeople didn’t know what was happening at first, but seeing the blue streak whiz by gave them an indication that it was Sonic and Chase having a race, so naturally, they broke out into applause. They actually went around the course twice before heading back to the Lookout, and upon crossing the finish line, Ryder’s pup-pad, after some updates that it automatically installed, was able to take a photo finish.
“Wow!” he exclaimed as he looked at the super-accurate photo.
“Did I do it?” Chase asked as Ryder showed the results. “I’m afraid the race ended in a tie!”
“Looks like both sides have their true blue!” Rocky smiled.
“Looks like it,” Ryder echoed.
Later, Sonic and the gang officially took a tour of Adventure Bay, starting with the Lookout and all of its features, including the Mighty Meteor. “Do note it has to be inside the tower where it is, or the pups lose their superpowers,” Ryder commented. “This happened to them once before, when a trio of supervillains stole the meteor.” He showed them pictures of the Ladybird, Copycat, and Harold Humdinger.
“Which of the three do you deal with the most often?” Amy asked.
“Probably Harold Humdinger.”
“Got it. I think you mentioned something about that yesterday.”
“So, how long do you plan to be in Adventure Bay?” Rubble asked.
“Don’t know,” said Silver, “but as long as Eggman is a threat, we’ll be there to stop him. Likewise, it takes all you dogs and your courageous leader here (Ryder) to keep law and order in this town.”
“What I like to tell everybody,” Ryder put in, “is that whenever you are in trouble, just yelp for help!”
“Good advice,” Shadow nodded, “especially if the Doctor comes by again.”
“I have a feeling he will be back,” Knuckles added, “because I could hear him swearing revenge as soon as we beat him.”
Hailey Dailey then stopped by to interview Sonic and his friends, and they answered all her questions about their battles with Eggman, why it takes all seven Chaos Emeralds to turn the hedgehogs into their super forms (and Tails and Knuckles also had super forms), and what they like to do for fun. What excited the pups the most was that the hedgehog and his teammates all had their rock band. “You can rock just like Luke Stars?” Rubble exclaimed excitedly.
“I don’t know who that is, but I’ll take your word for it,” Sonic replied. Ryder then showed him a photo of Luke Stars and mentioned how he was the town’s favorite pop star. “I even have a Luke Stars app that lets me know where he is at all times,” Mayor Goodway commented, further reinforcing the members of the Chaotix Detective Agency’s skeptical viewpoint of the townspeople. “Bearing in mind,” Vector commented to his team privately, “that we have seen way weirder people than this.”
“Exactly,” Espio agreed. “The moral of the story is never to judge a book by its cover. We may not understand the chicken statue, but it is a part of the town’s history that makes it what it is.”
All the while, Eggman was plotting another attack on Adventure Bay, since he had decided, “That’s the perfect town to use to build my Eggman Empire. Those people panic and overreact to everything! Even that mayor! And to think she’s so stupid, she has a chicken for a pet! Who does that?”
Meanwhile, Mayor Humdinger kept his secret lair on lockdown, not wanting to bother with Adventure Bay until Eggman was truly out of the picture.
