A beautiful picture of a character from my Will To Survive series, Grifter, as drawn by Kitsuko She's an absolutely amazing artist who you all should check out!
BIO:
Grifter is an illiterate, mid twenties Scavenger, born in the wastelands of Earth; long after the horrors of WW3, and smack in the middle of the horrors of the Cure Crisis. Grifter never had the chance to meet his birth parents, and was instead raised by his older brother, Boondock, and for the majority of his early life lived in the remains of the St. Pleasance Juvenile Corrections House with five other orphan children. Being the oldest, Boondock protected Grifter from dangerous scavengers and thugs infesting the local area, but was ill-equipped to raise his little brother; due in no small part to undiagnosed mental conditions which plague many of the humans trying to survive in an ever-collapsing society. Normally stoic and quiet, Boondock's relationship with Grifter changed from protector to tormentor as he grew older. Convinced that he needed to "train" Grifter to be able to protect himself, Boondock's unfeeling nature allowed him little hesitation in turning his so-called training into mental and physical abuse, forcing Grifter to push himself harder and harder, under threat of serious beatings, and constant "sparring". Having almost a full 10 years over on his little brother, Grifter stood very little chance against his older brother, or the unreal expectations he seemed to have in him.
Because of Boondock, Grifter's teeth on the right side are badly cracked, broken, and mangled, as well as leaving his body covered in scars from his older brother's preference of bladed weapons. Eventually, the admiration he had for his brother's colossal strength when he was younger, was turned entirely into resentment, and backed with a number of the other now-teens of the St. Pleasance facility, Grifter finally found the nerve to stand up to him, and Boondock left; abandoning him and the others, while those unwilling to see Boondock's abusiveness, followed with him into the barrens. This however, would leave the abandoned school unable to respond when the Cure's hives began to spread into the area. Unable to get away in time, Grifter was caught in a collapse and survived nearly a full month in a small pocket of utility tunnels, all as the Cure rapidly infested the area. It was during this time that Grifter's nerves would be pushed too far as the Cure began mentally tormenting him; sensing his presence and fear, and trying to draw him to them. With no more food, and unable to handle the horrible truth he learned of humanity's greatest threat, an emotionally drained, starved, and battered Grifter eventually shut off and fell back on the harsh lessons and teachings that had been forced into him. Despite all odds, Grifter managed to fight his way out, and escaped the Cure without infection.
Because of a stint with an equally abusive Work Assistance Program, which took advantage of his almost inhuman stamina, along with many others, Grifter is a considerable mechanic, despite being unable to read, and speaking with very badly slurred speech. Eventually, rescue would come to him in the form of passing settlers who managed to take the nearly unresponsive young man with them, on their way to a large group of settlers lead by a man named Dusker Everette Loveless; a former Caravaner, who offered him the care and home he desperately needed. However, the damage to Grifter's nerves never fully recovered, leaving him unable to be alone for great amounts of time, suffering from frequent tremors, prone to sudden violent outbursts if approached from behind or the side, and unable to control his compulsive cursing; which worsens the more worked up he becomes.
In spite of all of this, however, the few people in his life who have managed to get close to him, have a friend for life. While Grifter's self-care is rather poor, willing to run himself to death if left unchecked, he cares very deeply for the few people he allows close to him. No matter how badly he'd been beaten, Grifter almost always manages to rise to the occasion, and proves that with his sharp senses, quickness, and defiant endurance, that he is strong in spite of his older brother, and not because of him.
