For the Strixhaven Commander set!
AD: Zack Stella
Oh man I am definitely a little disappointed with the crop they chose for the card, as so much detail is lost including the little easter egg in the runes (for those familiar with the game, they are the same runes as the ones on Muraganda Petroglyphs). Still, quite happy with this one and good to finally be given an anthro, and for a legendary card no less!

"And that, my studetns, is why HHhhunny is our most important natural resource!"
Absolutely love the easter egg with the Petroglyphs, that's super cool design and very sad they decided to crop it out! Very happy to see you post it here so we can fully appreciate it :)
I loved this card when I saw it and I love it even more now that I know you did it!
Jesus, the detail on this is INSANE! Amazing work.
I'M SO EXCITED FOR STRIXHAVEN AHAHHHAHAHAAAHHHH!!! Gonna be soooo many owls @>@ and I love this particular card and it's abilities and of course the art! Gonna be stuffing em in my tri-color deck for sure.
Oh man the owl characters are GORGEOUS! I wish I'd gotten one to draw but alas xD. Still, bear is cool too!
Thank you!
Thank you!
Maybe next time! Or when I can snag a commission from you on your next opening, I have a few owls hoo might look good in mage robes doing magical stuff.
Still your patient bear professor is magnificent!

So glad we get to see the full size version, it's stunning, so much personality!
Ohhh... that IS a really lousy crop! You can't see the runes OR the student! But yeah, I'm so glad your anthro art made it into the set! Seeing all the anthros populating the world, I was hoping at least one of them would be one of your works. On the topic of details, I love how this all looks. The books stacked on the small desk in front of the board, the student taking notes, and above all the outfit. It's gorgeous. I love the intricacies you put in it, especially with where the pants begin and the coat ends. The way it all blends together makes me a little jealous, like I wish my everyday clothes were that classy. I like how it veers away from being too stereotypically European and dives into its own style. You even did the glasses so that they would fit around his ears! Beautiful card art.
Also I love how bear cards historically have no abilities and Ruxa cares about cards with no abilities. I hope to see this card in the games I play!

Haha yeah, it seems a lot of people appreciate the ability, even if it may have limited playability. But it would be fun to see people work with it!
Thanks so much for the lovely comment!

I have the bear in my bears and bees deck, if you want to know the deck contents let me know I can fire you off a list. Pure madness when you can summon a wackdoodle load of bears on the feild and they all get buffed by the murgandas and such :). 12/12 junk 2/2 bears make great dragon eaters.

It makes me happy to see you posting new art and simultaneously realizing it'll appear on a Magic card :D
wonderful work

Yooooooo! Love all the personality crammed into this. What can you tell me about the little guy in the bottom right of the chalkboard?
Hah, thanks Jonathan!
These are the Strixhaven equivalent of math students - they can't draw to save their lives but Ruxa appreciated the attempt.

I think he's the pilot of the paper airplane. Probably bailed out when it crashed.
Just fantastic level of detail, and I agree, the crop for the card was unfortunate. But not surprising, as they centered on the main character.
You continue to prove why you deserved this job, in spades. You're one hell of an A+ list artist, and I'm glad to have met you.

I know it kinda sucks, but Often times, one needs to consider the form factor of the tiny bit of cardboard you have to frame the piece in, and sometimes a small detail can just end up lost in the shuffle as a result and it's SUPER unfortunate.
I love this card <3 Seeing an anthro bear prof made me really happy and your art is ever so lovely. It always makes me smile when I spot a card drawn by you. This card kinda makes me want to embrace the meme dream of bear tribal, not gonna lie.
Don’t let your dreams be dreams!
Thank you! I’m glad people are enjoying my card art!

I LOVE this art and this card - you’ve done such an awesome work on MTG, man!
Fantastic attention to the lighting coming through the window and the illumination of the magic from his claw. His clothing is beautiful and I love the posture, as well as expression. There is so much wonderful detail in this picture, the texture and pattern of the walls, the cobwebs over the paper plane, the crest on the benches the books, the dust particles been reflected in the light, also the cute doodle in the corner of the board. I dare say the student looks as if she's in her own little world rather than watching the teacher. The bear looks serious, yet magnificent. I love the texture of his fur, the way his paw is naturally open, with the light/shading variation in the sunlight. OUTSTANDING work on the details, the atmosphere and setting💖⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🙌👍
Thank you so much for your lovely comment, I’m glad you appreciate all the details!
Awesome picture! The details in the professors' clothing is amazing!
Again, your brushwork astounds me, I love the body that you really capture with each painting. It certainly gives me some aspirations to achieve. Beautiful work. I'll be signing up to your Patreon soon, I think those process videos are gonna teach me a lot, worth a sitdown and study.
Keep up the beautiful work!

There's definitely been some unfortunate crops in MtG history, did you ever see what they did to Treva's Ruins? I love this full version, lots of fun details throughout the piece!
So, I've always been curious, do they send you copies of the cards you do art for, or do you need to wait for the set release?

Oh wow, that is an usual crop. I imagine the full art was just a bit too difficult to distinguish on card size, still you have to wonder if they really had to cut off almost 80% of the full art, lol.
We receive what are called artist proofs, limited edition, white-backed (not tournament legal) versions of the cards we’ve illustrated after the set releases. Most artists sell them, sometimes with the option of a little custom sketch on the back :).

If you don't get access to Ajani I will riot.
It will be a small riot, online only, and probably limited to one post, but I'm gonna riot.

What's not to love, from all of the cloth folds to the expression and detail of the professor's face.
Congratulations on getting this into an official card.

Hm, I guess it never occurred to me that someone else might do the cropping. It’s a shame they don’t work with the artists on that point.
This is gorgeous! I'm obsessed with those claws, so clearly bear but so neatly kept for scholarly work! Just stunning as always 😍
//squints That little chalk sketch in the corner reminds me of that 13 year old Novgorodian school kid's homework doodles - but with horns!
I love how you drew his glasses. Just everything about this piece is amazing.
Oh, My Great Fang!
Brilliantly fantastic work, all very nice details & colors.
Thank you, Caraid.

Dang that is impressive! The level of detail is stunning. And yeah that crop was a real bummer.
Aw, they could've cropped it a little bit more to the left I think...but it looks like they wanted some negative space on the right :( idk, they could've even zoomed out a little bit to include everything else... but alas...
Love the folds on their robe and you've managed to put a lot of poise and grace in this bear.
We're so lucky you're sharing the full art though! So thank you for that!

Thank you so much! I agree I think they could have shown a bit more of the board at least (I’m not happy about them cutting out the student either but I do understand that choice for the sake of concentrating focus on Ruxa).
This is so overwhelmingly lovely. The soft lighting, the details... fabulous work.
The details, big and small and character designs.
The cobwebbed paper airplane down in the corner...tossed by a former student known for his rudeness and trollish behavior. It speared the backside of the robed ursine while the professor was facing the board. The only instance the Ruxa's composure became wrathful. Resulting in a blackened spot where desk and student once existed. A spot never filled in since...as a reminder that patience has it's limits.

Haha neat. I was already looking for the whole art the moment i saw that. What were the chance that a fellow furrie made it? Well, kinda i guess, but i did not expect that; great work!
I love how absolutely freaking ridiculous those robes are
Look at the little dust specs in the light - brilliant attention to detail!
My goodness, that outfit is RAD as hell. It looks like it'd be hell to put on with those claws, but I guess that's where the "patient" part comes handy.
Curious if there's something in particular that inspired that clothing - I'm a sucker for layered stuff!

Thank you! It's inspired by the general style guide for the Quandrix college (one of the five colleges of Strixhaven). They all have similarly intricate outfits that reflect their magical interests, which mostly revolve around fractals (their college motto is "Math is Magic").
This is just beyond beautiful. Such wonderful work I don't even know where to begin explaining all the things I like about it!
If you don't mind my asking, about how much time does something like this take you to complete?

Thanks so much! This piece took around 30 hours to complete. Most of my full illustrations take somewhere between 20 and 30 hours.
Thank you very much for answering! Wishing you the best with all the fantastic work that is yet to come.
I like that paper airplane!
(who knew they had that technology back then?!)

The detail of the bear's outfit is phenomenal loving those swirls! Loving the atmosphere as well.
I wanted to say "professional quality", but lookie here, you ARE a professional!
WOW, the lighting just blows my mind, among other things. So detailed and beautifully rendered, thank you for sharing!
While the crop for the standard print of the card is unfortunate as you mention in the description, they do also have the borderless version of the card that shows the easter egg more clearly. ^^'

They'll have an updated quality of the card at some point, unless one is floating out there right now already that isn't on Scryfall just yet.

The details of the clothes, the lightings... holy shit... Rendering of the textures, wood stone... even the spiders web!
That's just superb.
That's just superb.
Yeah, the cropped version miss some of the finer background detail. Shame, it's a really fantastic work.
I don't do much with MTG nowadays, but this is a wonderful piece brimming with personality and love in the details. Glad it became such a wonderful work of art for a card.
Very fine, FINE lighting in this! And the little dust motes lit up by the sun!! Erudite bruin!!! :) Fancy uniform. Really, superb work in this! Would it be possible for you to post the uncropped version? :) :)
Annnnnnnd, I ended up getting 1 1/2 boxes of the set. lol. Definitely some nice art in this set though! And it's neat that they have some cards in the packs just for showcasing the art itself too. Love this piece that you did here! :)
I pulled the extended art. Absolutely beautiful card. So cute
Love this art! If it's any consolation, the crop is a lot more generous on the extended art version.
I've been pulling so hard for this card ;w;, the crop on it they did was pretty bad but it's so cool!
Thoughts, roughly in order:
-Aw they look so cooooool, bear professor beaR PROFESSOR
-Geez, tenure is awesome and all, but having to wear the formal doctorate gown for courses has got to get super warm with all that fur.
-"Remember formulae and glyphs such as these the next time your advisors tell you that token summoning is novice work, or that an ideal summoning is complex. Most problems are not so complex that they cannot simply be overrun."

I picked this guy up as a new commander in his own right. Thanks for the incredible art!
Oh yeah somebody at the c.e.o level wizards of the coast is hella racist cause they could of cropped the bottom and not the width.
He totally looks like a perfect unit for Vanguard's Great Nature clan. XD Awesome!
Those robes are simply the cat's meow. What can I say, I'm a sucker for ruffles. :D
I have to wonder if this will end up in the strixhaven D&D book later this year!
I wouldn't learn anything in this class because I'd be to distracted by that handsome teacher 🐻💖
I have no words to convey my admiration for your creativity! you are incomparable!
I am in awe of this guy's cloak. Looks kind of familiar but I can't seem to place it.
I was so happy when I pulled this card. I love the little glasses. Strixhaven needed more bear people.
if there is an uncut version, why did you not post it and not the cropped version?
I'm not sure what you mean, sorry? The above image is the uncropped (full) version.
I'm sorry I thought that was the cropped version. I did not realize there was a link to another image in the description.
