Zally is the undisputed greatest source of eggs from uncertain fathers in the enclave.
From the moment she was old enough to be put on the roster, it was very hard for Vizlet to keep Zally's matings restricted to just the males that were assigned to her in a given fertility period.
After a few frustrating years of this, Vizlet decided to strike a deal with Zally: she could mate with whichever males caught her fancy, so long as she stuck to her mating assignments on rare occasions where Vizlet did need to assign her to a specific male, or set of males.
On such occasions, Vizlet has learned that she needs to ensure the male in question is provided lots of nutrient-rich foods, as when Zally's "attentions" are restricted to a single male, she tends to tire them out; sometimes to dangerous levels.

There's actually a few arguments to be made in favor of a designated source of mix-'n-match rando eggs around an enclave!
Except for that one you haven't revealed yet but totally exists who is obsessed with Vizlet and will have no other. Even keeps a Yinglet made Dakimakura of Vizlet he drew himself. You know the one!
These are small creatures, so it would be something like snee-snee
IT IS

Silly Zally. Have ze matriarch kidnap a couple male humans for you when you're on ze schedule.
Oh. A yinglet slut. I see. Well I guess its not surprising one would exist. I bet plenty of males try to get close to her for a chance with a female.
To be fair, she's not the first one we've seen, just the most professional one. Remember the Oracle of Bakersroof?
As they have been most important for most civilization as well.
Hartdly the first.
She just so happens to be the first female one we've seen.
She is however probagbly the first aggressively sexual one we've seen.

When they found him the next morning, there was nothing left but eyeballs and toenails.
Oh, this guy is look better than I thought! He definitely have better bones
You need to have them, to be an enclave guard!
Both for enemies, and also Zally

Holy...I just realized the Zally actually pronounces s as 'S' instead of 'Z'.
I think it's just the "th," even those morons on the bakery roof were saying their S's fine.
Unless they are French:

Aaaaaw, so so poor girl... Love her more, and wanna help her... Somehow...
Having at least one gal like her around is probably a good thing. It will at least keep the gene pool diverse. Hopefully the value of the good mutations outweighs the downside of all the bad ones.
....so the girls are just as hump crazed as the boys
Or at least they CAN be. I get the feeling she's exceptional.
I love that Versaria's thought bubbles are in first person. As in, in her head, Versaria is wondering "I am wondering where Zally is."
The last of the description reminds me of those poor male antechinus who mate themselves to death...
Also, does Zally give off Valley Girl vibes or is that just my imagination?

That's not the only thing that was SO. HARD.. at least before Zally got there ;3
Yeahhh, they're a lot of fun to make extreme poses and expressions for!
Hehe, she's definitely an interesting/fun one alright.
I probably need to dig around and look at the Regional Guides again, but I forgot, are Yinglets fertile year-round or just during certain points of the year?

Humans are fertile for half the year, not precisely year round. That being the fertile parts of their ovulation.
Mice and rodents in general are mostly where to look for literally year round ovulation. Considering yinglets are described as mixes of birds and vermin, the former being strictly seasonal due to strict diets and feeding pressures of young... I do not see yinglets having that problem less than a large brood's expected and gambled mortality rate if things go bad.
That being said, the field guide compares the process and anatomy with the chicken as far as batches daily that incubate together when time, but does mention without description a fertility cycle, so mostly we just know that there is one, rather than "any time."
I'd consider that it sounds like yinglet home country, like val salia, is mostly unchanging as far as seasons. By the supplied map, the northern arctic circle is defined but the southern nor the exact equator are known. Considering the Val Salian climate seems to be similar to Peru thanks to the Andes closely backing it, and assuming a generally earth sized planet, the yinglet home lands should be closer to the equator than not. There you do not get hard defined four seasons. More like two, usually "wet" and "dry" nearer the coast. For salt swamps that would make sense.
But that might suggest a more timer ticking situation, like humans and mice, than a "seasonal" or "part of the year" scheme like birds. Plus the behaviors would be vastly different if it was that... because... yinglets... would have a mating season....
Gods though, imagine the fuss. And the mess. It can't happen. I refuse to believe.

Man, this kind of comments made me wish giving a like to comments was a feature
I agree with Ravenpuff, there really should be a way to give likes to comments.
That was a more detailed response than I ever expected to get just asking about the fertility cycle of a fictional species, granted I did also consider that I wouldn't even get a response, but it was no less appreciated for sure. You gave some good food for thought here, especially in considering the climate of the area. It never crossed my mind to consider, or even question, the overall climate and where Val Salia is situated on an (presumably) Earth-sized planet. Also, kudos in what you said about human fertility. I never thought about it that way, guess I'm too use to comparing it to fertility cycles of other creatures.
In any case, thank you for replying. Certainly gave me something think about in the future as I read through future strips of this series.

Daaaaang, this is some real nice biosphere talk and setting examination! I really do try and stick with realistic climate/evolution/etc science, so that stuff like this in the comic can be mostly figured out by applying realistic bio therory like you're doing here! : D
Well you done boned up, congratulations.
It is you, who have the better bones. Of a story. *Thumbs up*
Writer and worldbuilder myself, and you never know when minutia, random information, will be useful. Or pertinent, which congratulations on high accuracy.

Only more reason for Figgins to be terrified.
Maybe Kattajack offered to try and tire her out, or share the apparently blissful strain of being on her breeding schedule?

Zally is certainly an "enthusiastic." And given her comment there, it makes one wonder if this is a persistent problem for her and if she's always so "enthusiastic" about things. Perhaps its a simple matter of the general Yinglet rabble not being enough to satisfy her. If that is indeed the case, perhaps she would find it a more satisfying time with another. Like say a human, if she is so opened to the idea. Just imagine the stories Zally could share with the other females after her passionate night. Might just lure away more of the girls into seeking a good time.
Yeah, she's like one of those too-hyper-to-manage little kids who grew up and translated her hyperness into a new outlet
The info blurb speaks of Zally producing a great deal of eggs for the enclave. Just how many children does she have running about the place? Have any of them inherited their mother's zeal for life and abundant energy?
"I must find Zally."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the first time we get to see Vesaria in full?
Yeah, going back, so far we only saw her head and maybe a bit of the upper body, but never the entire Yinglet.
Which is a shame, she is really cute and pretty.
Which is a shame, she is really cute and pretty.
Even as Vizlet despairs of Zally's abilities as a student and potential matriarch, Zally respects and cares about Vizzy and honors what her matriarch deems important. That's both touching and a little sad. To love, yet not be loved fully in return. Or maybe I'm reading too far into it.
It's a difficult situation, but like any family that has its problems, they both try to work through them, and the results are pretty decent!
I look forward to seeing more of this family working stuff out! Also, that armored slug critter in the second panel, I think that's the first time seeing one of those. Always cool to find new critters in the background.
I gotta say I really enjoy the "I am wondering where Zally is" because while it looks like a clumsy violation of "show, don't tell", it's also exactly the kind of way a yinglet would think, verbatim.
lol yes, she could have easily been thinking something much less literal and more leading, but I quickly realized, "No wait, that is exactly what her internal monologue would sound like."
Kass is going to meet Zally next, isn't he? Would that mean she'll be the "unwanted admirer" of Kass' not-brother/bodyguard or will she mistakenly go after Kass for smelling like a guy even though his body is female?
This page shows the double edged blade of a comic like this, there are so many amazing characters, each with their own personality and quirks, they all deserve more attention and time in the spotlight, but the more time you give to one, the less time you can devote to all the others who are just as good and interesting.
What's worse is this problem is compounded every time a secondary character like Vesaria or the woeful baxxid character whose name escapes me just now, when we are given a glimpse into their lives we want more, which is good but again leaves less time to devote to Katajak or Lopin or even Kass.
So many woes and difficulties! Life is hard! Zally understands!
