For this particular model I did something I had never done before. For the irises and pupils, instead of either painting them onto the surface of a sphere (Always looks terrible) or having them flat on the top of the eye with a secondary clear layer for the eye shine. I did the eye shine part of the latter one, but then went in and specifically shaped the iris and pupil such that they both bulged out a ton, with the key to all of this being another layer that completes the sphere of the eye that would have been removed with the iris/pupil with the normals flipped filling the empty space of the iris/pupil area when seen from the side. What this does is when the iris and pupil are viewed from the sides, they look much like how actual index-of-refraction looks through actual lenses for a iris and pupil!
Granted, for a slit pupil the effect doesn't quite work when viewed from the top, but given you can't really see the iris/pupil from those angles because there's a head in the way, the effect works surprisingly well, even with the stereoscopic vision you get in VR.
