Under the darkness, two small figures were making their way to the church. The first one opened the front door carefully, allowing a bigger entrance to get through. With that done, he checked over again, and rolled his eyes.
“C’mon scaredy cat, you coming or what?!” Chester shouted, not caring about his volume.
Tom who sat behind some bushes, barely had even his orange ears peek.
“Why do I have to go!? What if Miss Elephantus will get worried? What if I get hurt, and then she-”
“Oh stop being a bady! C’mon, it won’t take long. We’ll go in, search for that gem and then go back.”
He pulled the door open a bit further. He allowed Fotia to get in, as the latter eyed everything with wonder.
“Put the bag by the statue,” Chester told him. He heard Tom tiptoe very carefully towards the building. He sighed, “Dude, just get in.”
“Are you sure there aren’t-” Tom gulped, “-g-g-ghosts?”
Chester stared at him directly. Soon enough, he began shaking his head.
“Dude…really?”
Tom was silent at first. Then he took a moment to think on it.
Then he responded with “Well, what if they are malevolent?”
“Then we can exorcize them, I guess! Now, get your butt in here!”
Tom, after one last bout of hesitation, entered through the door. Chester didn’t try to hide his grumbling from the cat, but then stopped as soon as he had a good look at the inside. Thanks to the night, not only did the nave appeared older and more decrepit, but also creepier. And colder too. It was as if they entered a freezer.
“Geez!” Chester rubbed his shoulder, regretting only putting a single, thin jacket. That said, the vapor came from his mouth did distract him a bit, making him play a bit.
“It’s freezing. AH-CHOO!” Tom sneezed. “We need to go home soon.”
“Yeah, yeah…” Chester was about to tell them what they should do next, only to notice someone else within the church, who was Fotia.
He was tall, bluish in hue, and had his back turned. He was also very much not from this world.
“A GHOST!” Tom shouted and instantly ran to the door.
Chester slapped his head and shuffled lazily to the opening.
Putting his head in, he shouted to the outside, “Tom, that’s Azure!” After few seconds, from afar echoed a loud “OH!”
Returning back, first thing Tom did was ask for an apology. He then continued with, “What are you doing here, Sir?”
Better question is, where have you been all this time?” Chester added. Azure didn’t answer straight away. Chester felt annoyed, again.
“I verily expected it to be that you wouldn’t come here,” he said. “Are you here for the crystals?”
“What else?” Chester answered, before making his way to the statue’s altar. Bending down he began checking each crevice, methodically moving, until he could fine something shine.
Truth be told, he found out about them much, much earlier. He was able to get one by sticking his hand and hand it to a traveling man who thought he had a piece of diamond. Chester took it, and once he decided to leave the town, he was going to use these rocks to get money.
“I see…” Azure coughed, and then returned to gazing at the statue. This suddenly triggered Chester’s curiosity.
“And you? What’s your excuse?”
“Simply, wondering…”
Chester groaned, then continued searching the base of the altar again. As soon as he saw something shine, that small sparkle, he went on to call for Fotia. He found him standing by the window, facing up to the light of the moon. He shouted, “Fotia, can you get us hammers?”
Fotia, uncharacteristically silent, turned and carried the bag to him. Chester rummaged and took out a pair of hammers, one big steel one, and the other small, with a wooden handle. He handed the latter to Tom.
“Let’s get to it.”
Tom looked above the altar, while Chester clawed the wooden base with the hammer.
“Is it good to destroy parts of this sacred place?” Tom asked meekly.
“It’s a dump, so who cares,” Chester answered bluntly. He struggled pulling the wood apart.
“I dunno. Do you object to this, Sir Azure?”
“I find little objection with breaking a wooden box,” Azure answered absent-mindedly.
Tom went on to be quiet for most of their operation. Chester, albeit managing to make holes, just couldn’t pull the thing away. For an old thing, it was sure sturdier than most of Mr. Woodman’s toys! Getting frustrated enough, Chester just pounded it with the hammer, until finally a hole big enough can be seen. From there, he handed that hammer back to Tom, and stuck his hand in.
“You would think that the death of you, you would not hold any more grudges or secrets against the world. And yet, it is as frequent as rain dropping during summer. Isn’t that right, Amatus?”
Chester turned his head to Azure. “What are you talking about?” he asked. The spirit chuckled.
“I was speaking with the statue there. It is odd, I would never think both Rose and Zamarad of all people to fall apart.”
“What…makes you say that?”
“Because Zamarad would’ve never done something like that.”
Chester raised one of his brows. “What do you mean?”
“Her decision…to take his life and then to hide it…not only was it impractical, but also completely out of her character. She is as illuminating as the lightning in the sky, and loud too when she wants to be.”
“I dunno what you are talking about…but hey, I think I got one!”
Chester pulled his hand to show something shiny. It was a big, jagged piece, and brilliant looking too. Tom inspected it closely, definitely enamored.
“So pretty,” he uttered. “And, if I follow you correctly, it can potentially absorb some energy or force to store and then hit back?”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Chester mumbled while reaching with his hands again. Taking another piece, he gat it to Tom. This time it was smaller and crooked.
“Um…it looks uneven. If I could attach it to battlebot, I might need to redesign the arm. Maybe if I can sand it, too.”
“Well, that’s for you to find out, cause I’m done my part.” Chester dusted his hands. “Hey Fotia, we’re going home!”
Fotia didn’t respond, and in fact, kept standing by the window, instead. Azure noticed this, even if the kids haven’t.
“Hey, you coming or-“
“May I spend time with him, Chester? Just for a moment. I will lead him to his home, rest assured.”
Chester’s eyebrow was raised, but he sighed with a shrug and took Tom, and the backpack, with him. Soon enough, the only ones left are two spirits, within the walls of a cold, lonely church.
Azure hovered by the younger looking comrade, and spoke bemusedly,
“What are you doing, my petite friend?”
“You would dare to use such language against me, when I am, in fact, the biggest of children here?”
“You are a third smaller than Chester, what are you even blathering on about?”
Fotia scowled at Azure, who wore smugness in his face without shame. “I am confused,” he said suddenly. “By all of this.”
Azure pursed his brows together, and after dwelling a bit, tried to answer with, “This existence is something we have come to accept, Fotia.”
“My frustrations do not lie with existence, for it is undeniable. What fool denies what is in front of you? But I am frustrated with those who rather do nothing with it!”
“Excuse me?” Azure asked, trying to piece together.
“What once has been finished, cannot be again redone the same! Wasting ourself on past mistakes instead of protecting the important element of our mission…these children!”
Azure looked away, biting his tongue before coming up with a proper response. “But Rose has been hurt greatly…”
“She said herself she chose to bury her own father to the ground and let his memory rest. We cannot stay in this past, Azure!” Fotia retorted, without looking his friend’s way. “She is bringing herself down and will doom her friends.”
Azure’s mouth was hanging open. “But Fotia, she died young-“
“And so have we!” Fotia shot his eyes straight at Azure’s. “You barely fell in love, Taja had yet to learn what womanhood meant…The only one who accepted his death is Kage, and he was dead man walking!”
Azure was ready to respond, only to chuckle and note, “So you are saying you have yet to accept it?”
“Yes, even if I ought to.”
“If it were only this easy,” Azure chuckled regrettably. He turned to the window, the shining of the moon passing right through his body, though not Fotia’s. “Their souls will not rest till we free them.”
“That is only fair.”
The two spirits would spend some more time reminiscing. All the while, Rose would hear it all, under the same bask of moonlight.
