“… so who the heck are you again?”
“… we literally just did our introduction…”
“Yeeeeeah… and I was a little too preoccupied with having no clue what the heck was going on to pay attention.”
“… fair point.”
Sitting on the floor of the small gym Petie stared at his captors in annoyance. He’d been told one of the gyms was freed for him to do some training, he’d tried to find it, and the moment he’d opened the door he’d been subjected to some rip off scene from Macbeth… or whatever that play with the witches was. Momma hadn’t been interested in reading him any play scripts growing up…
Whatever it was he was currently sitting before four witches, a steaming cauldron, and an assorted mess of various halloween props and effects. He half expected them to be chanting double bubble toil and trouble or the like but they’d instead launched into some song and dance (without the song) introducing themselves complete with flashing lights. All it managed to do was make him more annoyed by the end of it and now he wanted answers.
The leader of the bunch stepped forward. She was a galarian slowking, heavyset, and dressed in a purple gown that looked like the kind of thing an evil queen would wear in one of Rose’s old magical girl animes. “Well we could take it from the top I suppose-“ she hummed, a light smile on her lipsticked lips, while tapping her chin before noticing his expression and chuckling “Oooor we could just introduce ourselves, that could work too~ My names Miriam, please call me Mimi though~” she said giving a theatrical bow “And we’re Team Coven~”
“… as in an actual team or…?”
Blinking for a moment she gave a deep belly laugh “Oh heavens no~ We just like the name. Half of us aren’t even in the battling major~” she said, waving her hand dismissively, before motioning to the other girls on either side of her “It’s just me and-“
“Angelica’s the name~” the hatterene member of the group suddenly butted in, swishing in front of Mimi with a smile that had Petie scooting back a little on his bottom “Battlings my claim but terror is my game~ Pleasure to meet you, so wanna play~?” she purred in a tone that had to be intentionally unnerving. Not that she needed help being that. The tendrils swishing under her grey gown in place of arms or legs were plenty creepy to look at already. Something about the way she moved was off putting too, like she was gliding rather than standing…
“Hey hey~ Don’t spook him already! We haven’t started!”
All the built up unease came crashing down as the mismagius member of the group… perched on top of Angelica. He didn’t have a better way to describe it as the pink and white witch squeaked shrill protests while stooping under the purple witch laying on top of her. Even the fact Angelica’s body was bending in a way it shouldn’t was more comical than creepy with the giggling ghost using her as a chair.
“Hiiii lil teddy~ Don’t let Angelica spook you yet~ She can be a meanie sometimes~” the mismagius cheered, waving to him and ignoring the hatterene trying to shove her off. She was dressed in what Petie could only describe as “Witch Idol” with a short, puffy black and orange dress and striped tights as she finally got off of Angelica to strike a pose “I’m Winifred~ Everybody calls me Winnie~ Nice to meet you~”
Petie just wondered if meeting Terri had somehow made all the ghost girls he was gonna meet from now on seem insane.. as someone cleared their throat. Looking up he found the delphox of the group standing next to him. “Sorry about those two, I’m Hazel and it’s nice to finally meet you Petie~” the fox said, sounding overly prim and proper as she curtsied to him before brushing out her black gown “Like Mimi mention she and Angelica are the ones in battling. I’m in the management major and Winnie is in the fashion major respectively, we just like to call ourselves Team Coven cause it’s fun…” a sly smile crossed the fire types face as she struck a pose to make the cape she was wearing swish “And really… what else would you call a quartet of witches~?”
Dumbfounded by the shock of someone sane and sensible in the room of madness Petie just blurted out the first thought that came to mind “… a-aren’t covens normally three witches though? The maiden, the mother, and the… uh… the cro-” the teddiursa became acutely aware of a tension in the air and every instinct he had told him his health and wellbeing depended on how he finished this sentence “… t-the other maiden?” he whimpered out as the tension continued for a moment before lifting.
“Smart kid~” Mimi was talking again “In our case we’re the maiden, the mother, the other maiden, and the other, other maiden.” the slowking said motioning to Winnie, herself, Hazel, and the Angelica in order. “And kinda surprised you even know about that, was serious about the smart kid comment~” she added, giving Petie a surprisingly warm and friendly smile as he found himself blushing and mumbling while looking away.
“W-well m-my Momma reads… read a lot of books to me a-and she’s a writer so I s-sorta picked up a thing or two is all…”
“That’s perfect~! You’re gonna help us~!”
“GAAAH!”
“Oops~ Personal space right?” Winnie cooed as she hovered back from having suddenly, with no warning, gotten nose to nose with Petie. Clutching his chest and panting he was starting to get why Jules didn’t like ghosts even as the other girls scolded the mismagius. As his heart stopped pounding and he could contemplate what the ghost had said though a familiar annoying feeling of being volunteered for something reared it’s head…
“Help you with what?” he groaned out, running a paw over his face. Mimi once against stepped forward as she spread her arms wide “Weeeeeell you see we’re all in the theater elective… and despite what happened last time-” the slowking didn’t look back over her shoulder but Petie could see Angelica and Hazel doing there best to look everywhere but at Mimi so Petie guessed they were the cause of whatever was being mentioned “the local library has allowed us to come back to do a special halloween show for the little ones~”
“Yeah~ We’re all gonna tell spooooooky stories~” Winnie gushed, nearly going through Mimi to get in front of her as she gestured eagerly at Petie “We each made up our own stories and are gonna take turns telling them with props and effects and everything cause it’s the spoooookiest time of the yeeeeeear~” the mismagius literally sang as she twirled in mid air as Petie just stared blankly. The annoying, nagging, familiar feeling getting much worse now.
“… and… what exactly am I supposed to be able to help with in all of that…?”
“Weeeeell you never do a show without a rehearsal or two-“ Hazel stepped forward now as the fox’s sly smile did nothing to make Petie feel better “and we’d been planning on recruiting one or two of… is it acceptable to call you tiny teens? I’m gonna call you tiny teens~ We’d been planning on recruiting one or two tiny teens since our age demographic-“
“Is 14 year olds?” Petie growled out, giving the fox as mean a look as possible as Hazel had the good grace to at least look embarrassed about it. “Five to seven year olds actually, buuuuuut tell me you couldn’t pass for that~” Angelica suddenly said, grinning as Petie turned the dirty look her way “Go oooooon, tell me~ I’d looooove to hear it~” Petie just bit his lip and puffed up his cheeks in annoyance as he decided… to change the topic.
“I just wanted to use the empty gym. They told me gym 23A was empty…”
“Oh, this is 23B.” the hatterene’s grin was gone to be replaced with a look of mild pity as she point to the wall “23A is next door through the locker room?” as her tone was so utterly, flatly sincere that Petie just slumped and put his head in his paws as he groaned. “Don’t worry, finding the right gym gets easier by your sophomore year.” he heard Mimi say as he didn’t bother looking up “But that’s what we want to… I don’t think recruit is quite strong enough a word… draft maybe?”
“How about kidnap?” Petie groused, head still in his paws… as he heard Mimi break into a belly laugh. “Kidnap works~ But yeah, that’s what we kidnapped you for…” suddenly seeing a hand reach down and cup his chin Petie found himself looking up into the slowking’s eyes “To listen to us tell little kid appropriate scary stories and give us your harshest criticisms~” she finished, giving him a warm and reassuring smile… which did all of nothing to quell the feeling he was being used because he looked like a little kid… again.
“And what if I don’t wanna listen, get up, and leave?”
“Then we get Hazel to turn you round with her magic and bring you ba-ooph!” Winnie started to say…till Hazel flicked her wand and smacked her in the tummy with a plastic jack o lantern. The fox’s expression making it clear she wasn’t in favor of that plan. “Then we won’t stop you… but before you make that decision-“ Mimi continued, acting as if her teammates hadn’t done anything “i would like to say that we’d be willing to compensate you for your time aaaaaaaand… you’d be helping us make Halloween extra special for a lot of kids~” she finished with a wicked grin that made it clear she knew exactly what she was doing.
“… that’s dirty tactics lady…”
“Oh, did I not introduce myself~? Hello baby bear, I live in a gingerbread house down the lane from your cottage. Profession? Witch with a capital W, you expect me to play fair~?”
“… I’m only humoring you cause that was the cleverest excuse anybody’s had to call me baby bear in a long while… what can you give me?”
“Whatever you want… within reason. We’re not rich or influential after all… but since we’re on a time crunch, how ‘bout I just say we owe you a big favor down the line and leave it at that? Deal?” Mimi said, pulling herself up to her full height and motioning to the other ladies “Does that sound fair to you girls? We agree to owe the bear a big favor if he does this for us?” There was a bit of hesitation from any of them as they nodded and gave affirmation… which made Petie pout since he’d run out of good excuses to get out of this.
Folding his arms and sulking a little he huffed “… fine… but you better expect me to be really, REALLY critical about your stories… got it?” His comment got another belly laugh from Mimi as she sauntered back over to the cauldron she’d been working over when Petie had originally come in “Excellent~ That’s exactly the kind of attitude that makes this fun~” her grin stretch ear from ear as she began gesturing dramatically to her fellow coven members “We’ve got an audience to impress ladies, get your game faces on… oh and dim the lights please.”
The last bit was said in such a casual tone of voice it took Petie a moment to register it… and by then he was in the dark with an eep as they just turned the lights out wholesale. He could hear the slowking in the darkness muttering to herself “Ooookay now we flick the… there we go!” suddenly there was light as the bottom of the cauldron glowed with shifting artificial reds and oranges while a dull white glow came out of the top. “Told you the batteries were in backwards.” Mimi said, tossing a glare in Winnie’s direction as the ghost just giggled, before turning her attention back to Petie “Told you we were in the theater elective~ I know how to get my hands on some really good props when I need to~”
“… f-fair point… you might be careful when you do it for real. Little kids might freak if you just turn the lights out on ‘em…”
“… noted… no, seriously somebody write that down.”
“Got it.”
Watching Hazel scribbling something down on a notepad Petie almost missed Mimi fiddling around with the base of the cauldron some more as the white glow at the top got brighter and dimmer for a few minutes before finally settling where it barely illuminated the ladies standing around it without drowning out the fake fire lighting effect bellow. “There we go, gonna have to remember these’s setting… now we don’t have the music ready yet but we can add just ooooone more touch…”
As she said this Mimi reach down next to the cauldron to what Petie could barely make out as a tub of different bottles and pulled one out. Popping the cork stopper out with a loud pop he watched the slowking pour a greenish powder into her hand till she had a good handful before passing the bottle back to Winnie who was giggling her head off for some reason. Holding her hand up high he watched Mimi take a deep breath… before giving a wicked smile and hurling the fistful of powder into the cauldron dramatically.
Petie genuinely jumped as there was a flash of light and a thick, green smoke started to billow out of the cauldron, tinting the white light green as Mimi gave a genuinely ominous evil laugh that echoed through the room… till he started to cough. He didn’t know what exactly was in the stuff but he could smell chemicals and something a little like those fireworks poppers people kept saying he was too little to have. It was definitely something to make stage smoke but it was a little strong or he was a little too close or-
“Less powder, got it. Lets scoooot you back a little.”
Petie squeaked mid cough as he felt an invisible force gently wrap around his middle and sliiiiide him back across the gym floor for a few feet till the smoke wasn’t reaching him anymore. He noticed Mimi’s eyes were glowing… and her scary expression from before was swapped for genuine concern. “I… fine…” coughing a few more times he took a deep breath “I’m fine… j-just… a little strong is all… w-was…” pouting for a moment he decided to be honest “It was pretty cool actually j-just… a little too much smoke is all…”
“You sure you’re gonna be okay? Can pause this if you need to go…”
“I’m fine! J… just get on with it, okay?”
“If you’re sure…” the slowking said, eyeing Petie for a moment more before taking a deep breath and raising her hands above the still billowing smoke, letting the green light bath over her “Anyway lets start this off with my story~” the wicked smile had returned to her face as she dramatically stirred the smoke “A little cautionary tale for all you good little boys and girls who think being brave means not being scared of anything… like warnings~ I call it…”

“-and Lenny was found the next day, huddled and scared and alone in the park… but unhurt. George on the other hand…? Nobody ever saw George again… though… they say on some nights when the trees are bare and the moon is high, if you walk by the park~? You might just hear him… screaming in the forest~ Who knows, you might be able to go find him… if you’re not scared~ The End~”
Mimi punctuated her stories conclusion by stepping backwards out of the light, vanishing save for her outline and a slight glow in her eyes. Aside from the slight sounds from whatever was powering the lights on the cauldron and whatever was making the smoke the room was silent. Petie could feel the anticipation… not to mention the four sets of eyes staring at him expectantly. Pursing his lips he lowered his head…
Cause he was really, really annoyed he couldn’t think of anything to nitpick in that story~ “… it was good okay.” he finally sighed while folding his arms to pout “I heard stories like it before but it was still fine. Quick and to the point, just spooky enough, and perfectly okay for the age group…” Mimi’s belly laugh echoed in the darkness “You sound just so disappointed about that~” she sounded genuinely amused “So should I take it this tale has the teddy bear seal of approval on it~?”
“But… he’s a teddybear, not a seal or a popplio~“
“Winnie, do we have to do this every time?”
The ghost just giggled in response as Petie rolled his eyes “Yeah, yeah. It was a good spooky story… I only have to sit through three more, right? Whose next?” he waited for a reply… and even in the darkness could tell they weren’t even looking at him as he could hear them messing with the cauldron again “… what now?”
“Technical difficulties.” Mimi’s tone was embarrassed “We’d planned on having a different color smoke for each story and I’m trying to figure out how… to… swap it out… someone please hit the lights so I can see what I’m doing and this doesn’t trigger the smoke alarms? Again.”
“I thought you said that one time wasn’t your faaaaault~?”
“It wasn’t and that isn’t helping Angelica.”
But here it is, a literal Nightmare before Christmas for all you good little boys and girls~ No Krampus is sight but we’ve got a few Befana instead (I think she was the Christmas witch anyway)~

“I Dunno George”
This is a story about George.
George was fearless and brave… and a jerk. He though not being scared made him better than all the other kids so he’d bully and pick on them. After all, he wasn’t scared of what the grown-ups might do if they found out. He considered himself too brave for rules to hold him back..
Then there was Lenny. Lenny was George’s “Best Friend”… that’s what George told him anyway and he didn’t let Lenny argue. Whether it was bullying the other kids or breaking a rule George always told Lenny what they were gonna do and every time Lenny said “I dunno George”… before George made it clear Lenny didn’t have a say in the matter. This is what George called “Friendship” you see…
Well one fine day in October George was dreadfully bored… he didn’t feel like pushing smaller kids down on the playground, or taking other kids stuff, or causing trouble… no, he needed to find a rule and break it. To show everybody how brave and tough he was. But what rule was there to break that he hadn’t broken already…
Then he remembered, there was a warning the grown-ups liked to tell kids. A warning he and the other big kids dismissed as just a story to scare babies. “Don’t go to the park at night. Especially don’t go into the thickly wooded part of the park trail. It’s haunted, bad things happen there” Who else but a bunch of dumb babies would believe that~? At least that’s what George thought…
“Lenny, I know what we’re gonna do tonight. Meet me at the park after dark.”
“Gee… I dunno George-“
“Be there or else, got it?”
Lenny knew that the “Or Else” was… so whether he wanted to or not he met George after dark. When only the street lamps illuminated the empty streets and cold winds blew the leaves around in little flurries. They met at the gates to the park, the moon hanging high overhead to illuminate their walk along the pathway… aaaaaall the way up to the thick trees of the parks small forest. The thick trees that somehow blocked out the light of the moon with their bare branches, creating a tunnel of blackness before them.
“Alright, now it’s time to show everybody who the bravest kid in this town is!”
“I d-dunno George-“
“Shuddup Lenny! I’m not scared of some stupid rule or some stupid trees! Come on!”
And so they went, further and further into the forest with only the sound of their feet on the path, the mooooans of the wind through the trees, and the creaking of the trees in the wind. All around them and overhead as they walked through the darkness. They just went on and on along the winding path…
“What the heck? We should be out of here by now! What’s going on!?”
“I d-du-dunno George.”
“Shuddup Lenny… and stop laughing!”
“… I-I’m not laughing George…”
“Don’t lie to me! I can hear…”
George could hear it… but he realized it wasn’t coming from Lenny. Beyond the moans of the winds and the creaking of the trees… there was laughter. Shrill cackling coming from all around them, from the forest itself, and slowly getting louder and louder… as George noticed something else too.
“Is it getting darker? What’s going on!”
“I t-think w-we better g-go George-“
“What are you, a coward!?”
“I-I d-du-dunno Geor-“
“Com’on!”
Reaching back in the darkness and grabbing his “best friend’s” hand George yanked him along as he started to run. Ignoring how cold and clammy the hand was, Lenny must have been sweating in fear cause he was a coward, George dragged him along as he ran. The laughter echoing all around them now. Many voice shrieked and cackled, making the trees shake as they did so…
Till they stopped. Leaving George in darkness and silence.
“… w-well… well whatever it is I scared it away.”
George said as loudly as he could, hoping acting brave would somehow undo how scared he felt.
“So m-much for THAT rule, right Len-“
In the distance, far, far off in the distance George could suddenly hear something… coming back the way he’d just run from.
“G-George! George! Where’d you go! D-don’t leave me here!”
Hearing his best friend in the distance George felt the cold and clammy hand he was holding suddenly grab him back and an unfamiliar voice whisper in his ear…
“Oh… I dunno George~”
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!”
*************
