“… huh, you’re better at this than I expected.”
“… I mess around with tech and help set up stuff for the band one of my friends is in…”
“Gonna have to ask you to tell me how you got it fixed afterwards, can’t have it breaking down during the show~”
Petie didn’t reply, not wanting to mention he wasn’t sure he could actually explain what he was doing too well. Shutting the little hatch on the caldron after double-checking his work he scooted back and got to his feet “Anyway it’s fixed now… sooo… can I leave?” he asked, giving the biggest, most innocent face he could muster to the ladies, who’d been clustered around watching, before capping it off with a “Please~?”
“Oh, why of co-waitaminute!” Hazel started to say before looking surprised and embarrassed as the other girls laughed. “You got style teddy~ I like it… but nope, four tales of terror.” Mimi said as Petie pouted… before eeping as the slowking picked him up “And you’re only down one~” she chirped as she carried him back to where he’d been sitting before and set him down as he only pouted.
“Anyway~” Mimi looked back to the others “I think we’ll leave the lights on for now. Too much of a pain to do this in the dark.” Despite Hazel nodding in agreement the pout on Winnie and Angelica’s faces were obvious… as Petie was embarrassed to admit he was pouting along with them. The first tale, as much as he was loath to admit it, had been a pretty decent show after all… and the lighting effects had been kinda cool. He didn’t help fix their stupid pot for them not to put it to good use…
“So then, who’s next?” the slowking asked as she walked back to the group. An erie, low, ethereal cackling filled the air in response and Petie instinctively looked to Winnie… only to find the mismagius’s mouth was shut tight. Noticing his look the ghost type pointed over to the actual source of the noise.
“Well now, since Mimi’s little ditty got such a warm reception I think I’m up to bat next~” Angelica almost purred as she slid over to the cauldron, the cackling somehow continuing even as the hatterene spoke ”Okay boys and ghouls-“
“Thaaaaat second ones meeeeeee~”
“Winnie don’t ruin my moment.”
“Sorry~”
“Ahem, as I was saying… okay boys and ghouls I’ve got a lovely little gory story perfect to get the bile bubbling~”
Petie noticed Mimi and Hazel were suddenly looking a little nervous about this as Angelica threw a handful of powder into the cauldron. Making it flash and start belching out a pinkish colored smoke to replace the green from earlier. Leaning forward to grin an unsettling smile into the lighting effects the hatterene let out a unnervingly shrill giggle.
“A little killer chiller I like to call…”

“YOU’RE GONNA TELL CHILDREN THIS THING!?”
“… too much?”
“YES!!!”
“Angelica. We talked about this.” if words were ice type attacks Mimi’s tone would have sent Petie right into hibernation as he shivered a little. His outrage at Angelica’s story momentarily forgotten in favor of being nervous at the sheer glares the other girls were sending her way. He wasn’t the only one unhappy about her story choice.
Turning in place, Petie shuddered again as he noticed Angelica’s lower body somehow twisted around a full 180 degrees like a wrung out dishrag, the hatterene floundered “B-bu… but… I… but I… I thought…” she stammered as she looked at all her friends before Mimi cut her off. “In the corner. Now.” the fact that he was sitting with his legs folded was the only thing that kept Petie from instinctively obeying that order and command on the spot… Angelica though wasn’t nearly as cooperative.
“B-but I dun wanna! I just wanted to tell a fun story!”
“Fun for the kids. NOT fun for you. We TALKED about this. At length.” Mimi continued to use a chilly, commanding tone as she glared sternly at Angelica “No blood, no gore, no gruesome.” the slowking ticked off on her fingers “Now, in the corner.” she finished, pointing again as Angelica… did a wonderful impression of a spoiled kindergartner. “B-but those are fuuuun! See how they shock people! You can’t make me!” she finished, trying to match Mimi’s glare with her own.
“In the corner or I show Petie what you really look like. How tall you really are.”
Mimi’s tone was flat rather than icy in this case… which was fitting cause Angelica reacted like she’d just been blindsided with a board to the head. “Y-YOU CAN”T DO THAT!!” she yelled as Petie had no idea how to describe that statement in any way other than squealed. Mimi was unfazed and delivered what he knew as The Ultimatum. “I am going to count to three.” the slowking said, her tone even and measured as an execution decree as Petie almost fled on instinct. “One.” Mimi held up her hand and lifted a finger with each number “Two-“
Aaaaaaaand Angelica scurried over to the corner before, with one last pouty glare, turned to face it and sulk like a naughty kindergartner. Blinking for a moment and shaking his head to clear it from the… he… he had no clue how to describe what just happened. “U-uh…” he stuttered out, trying to get his thoughts in order… one question lingered though… “W-what did you mean by her… real form?”
“Oh, you dunno about hatterene I take it? We-“
“I’M IN THE CORNER YOU CAN’T TELL HIM!!”
Petie’s ear rung from Angelica’s shriek as Mimi just laughed “You can look it up yourself later~” as the slowking shrugged. “Sorry about that.” Too busy rubbing his ears to jump in surprise Petie found Hazel had snuck up next to him and was kneeling down to talk “We did tell her not to do that but…” the fox trailed off, gesturing in the air futile for a moment for something more to say “Well… I promise you she’s not as bad as she comes across as and you learn to love her.” she finally finished with a smile… that got noticeably awkward when Petie just gave her a flat look in reply.
“Ahem.” the delphox coughed into her paws as she stood back up “A-anyway we’ll have her go back to the drawing board on that one. T-this is why we’re doing a dress rehearsal after all…” Waiting for her to finish Petie put his paw up into the air “Question.” he checked to make sure everybody’s attention was on him before continuing “Are you telling me you set up all of this and are making me sit through these stories… without knowing what stories the others are telling?”
There wasn’t even a moments of pause before Mimi gave a cheerful “Yup. We really planned this out well didn’t we?” as she chuckled and rubbed the back of her head awkwardly. Petie just groaned and put his head in his paws. “Cheer up~” the slowking chimed “Two down, two to go and I’m sure the next two won’t be near as bad… correction. I hope the next two won’t be near as bad. Whose next?”
“Thaaaaaaat’s meeeeeeee!”
“GAH! PERSONAL SPACE!!”
Petie once again found a mismagius in his face as he furiously scooted back. If Winnie actually heard what he’d shouted at her though she didn’t acknowledge it as she cooed and rubbed his head “Buuuuuuut don’t you worry your fluffy lil head~” ghost type immunity to normal blows meant his attempts to make her stop just made her giggle as she continued “My story’s not gory like Angelica’s, thaaaankfully, but it IS spooky, spooooky, spooooooo-“
“Please just get on with it.” he groaned, glad when she finally pulled her hand away. He was already getting the feeling this was gonna be another train wreck of a tale. Ignoring his tone Winnie just giggled. A giggle that built into a cackle as she tossed the third handful of powder into the cauldron as purple smoke billowed out this time. Bobbling in the air over the smoke and lights the mismagius just grinned broad enough Petie shuddered a little.
“Okey-dokey-pokey… er… Petie~ My super spooky story is called…”

After several seconds of silence and noticing the… well… lack of a reaction the mismagius blinked a few times and gave a nervous giggle.
“Aaaaand that’s my story~”
“Seriously.” Petie said dryly. “Seriously.” Mimi followed up, sounding just as skeptical while Hazel was busy massaging the bridge of her nose in frustration. “Yeah, seriously!?” Angelica echoed… before huffing and pouting as Mimi pointed back to the corner where the hatterene was supposed to be.
Ignoring the grumpy fairy stomping her way back to the corner Winnie just bobbled in the air and kept giggling nervously “W-well… what did you think?” she asked as if their reception had been a touch too subtle for her. “I think I wasn’t anymore impressed with it than when I heard it word for word from my pre-school teacher back when I was little… er!” Petie quickly added to cut off any smart remarks “If you’re doing this for 5 to 7 year olds I think 2/3rds of your audience is probably gonna be too mature for that story. “I was gonna~”
“You were gonna?”
“Yup~”
“Well okay then.”
“… why are you sticking out your paw?”
“For the candy you just promised me.”
There was a snort of barely contained laughter from the delphox and the hatterene back in the corner, and a lot of unrestrained laughter from the slowking, as Winnie looked like a deerling in the headlights. “… the candy I promised you?” she repeated back in bewilderment as Petie just nodded, making sure his grin was as big, sweet, and innocent as possible. Make it perfectly clear he knew [i]exactly what he was doing. It wasn’t often he found himself in positions of power… and he was enjoying getting to spook the ghost.
“C-can we just say I owe you on that then?”
“Sure. I say you owe me this candy and half extra.”
“What!?”
“Interest on me having to wait~”
“Miiiiiimiiiiiii! The teddy’s being meeeeeeean!”
The slowking replied by laughing so hard she almost knocked the cauldron over~

“Strangers in the Dark”
It was a dark and stormy night… little Lilian hated dark and stormy nights, but this night was worse the any she could remember~
You see all day the radio and TV had been blaring the same thing… “Warning! Dangerous Maniac on the Loose! Dangerously Disturbed Individual still at Large!” And this warning hadn’t stopped even as the storm rolled in. Her parents were away you see leaving her with only her big sister and her doggy all by their lonesome in the big, empty house…
The big, empty house that creeeeaked and moooooaned and rattled and SHOOK in the wind and rain~ As if someone was doing their best to batter it down and break in. Even with her big sis telling her to go to sleep and being in the room next door Lilian just couldn’t. Every little noise sounded like something horrible to poor little Lilian, too scared to get out of bed. Something horrible creeping around. Something horrible coming to get her. To do terrible things…
Her only comfort was her faithful doggy King~ King had taken up position under her bed. Every time she thought she heard something she’d just reach her hand down and King would lick it like the good boy he was. It was a small measure of comfort for Lilian… small enough she felt herself drifting off to sleep even as the storm raged outside…
Till she woke with a start, sure she had heard something! Something in the house!
Dazed and still half asleep despite her terror Lilian staggered out of the bed and into the dark hallway, pushing open the slightly ajar door to her sister’s room. In the darkness she could see… her sister was still asleep. This gave her pause as she stopped mid reach for the light switch. She could clearly see her sister’s form curled up under the covers even in the dark… was she sure she heard something? Did she wanna risk getting a scolding for waking her sister up? Maybe she’d just dreamed it…
After lingering for a long minute Lilian put her hand down and toddled back to her room. Still shivering in fear as she climbed back into her bed. Tugging the covers up around her she suddenly remembered King. Reaching down under the bed she felt the familiar sensation of her doggy licking her hand which helped calm her down as she cuddled back into the covers and tried to get to sleep despite the storm still pounding outside.
When she woke up later the storm had passed leaving only the quiet of the darkness… save for one sound. A steady drip, drip, drip, drip, drip. Still half asleep little Lilian wondered if there roof was leaking as she climbed out of bed, too groggy to be scared, to find the source of the noise. She wasn’t surprised when her search led her to the bathroom. Her sister must have left the sink dripping or something…
Flicking on the lights in the bathroom though? That was a surprise.
Red. Red everywhere. Oozy, drippy red on the walls and floors. Especially on good old King, lifelessly hung up in the shower and slowly drip, drip, dripping red down bellow him. A message was scrawled for her, next to her dear dogs body, in big, jagged letters with red that had long since dried…
“People can lick too”
Screaming poor little Lilian fled through the house to her sister’s room, through on the lights as she entered… and stopping dead in her tracks.
She’d had no way to see in the dark after all, the red soaked through the covers over her sisters body. Too much red long since set in. Another message left for her on the walls in the dripping, dripping red…
“Aren’t you glad you didn’t turn on the lig-“

“Stop that Coffin”
Billy Thompson was in big, big trouble and he knew it~
You see, the sun was starting to go down and he’d promised his parents he’d get home before dark… buuuut he’d ben having too much fun on the playground and hadn’t been watching the clock~ He was gonna be in for a scolding when he got home for sure…
But that wasn’t the trouble~
The playground was a long ways away from his house after all. Even if he ran the whole way home he’d never get their before it was dark… and he’d never get past Potsfield hill before it was dark. You see his house was on the other side of Potsfield hill and the only way to get home was to go over the hill…
And past what was at the top~
The stone walls of Potsfield cemetery lined one side of the road you see… and the gate sat right at the top of the hill. Big, broad, and menacing~ Billy never liked walking past it even in the daylight… he just never had a choice.
Just like he didn’t have a choice now as he pulled his jacket tight around him and got to walking~
He’d been right… the full moon was rising in the sky and the street lamps, the very very few street lamps, that lined the road of Potsfield hill had long since come on by the time he started making his way up it. The cold wind blowing and moaning around him as he heard the sound of his sneakers on the pavement. The top of the hill and the gate was in sight now…
Doing everything he could not to look at the twisted iron of the gate Billy instead look past the hill where he could see the light of his house a ways off… he felt a little bit better now. He was almost home… then he heard the creeeeeeeak of metal moving next to him.
No longer able to ignore it Billy looked at the gate and told himself that the cold wind had blown it open. It’d blown it open cause somebody had forgotten to lock it. That was all it was. He need to get walking again. He was almost home…
And then the coffin appeared~
Sleek black and shining in the moonlight it burst through the open gate, somehow moving under it’s own power with a deep wooden thump, thump, thump sound and heading. right. for. Billy~
The moaning wind helped hide Billy’s screams as he took off running down the hill, eyes locked forward on the light of home. The slap of his sneakers pounding the pavement below doing nothing to drown out the thump, thump, thump sound behind him that was getting closer and closer.
He just needed to make it to his house, he just needed to make it to his house and he’d be safe. He told himself again and again… as the thump, thump, thump of the coffin just got closer and closer behind him as he reached the bottom of the hill.
It was just a little ways more… but Billy could hear the creeeeeak of the hinges of the coffin open to swallow him up. The thump, thump, thump was right in his ear now. He wasn’t going to make it…!
So he reached into his jacket pocket…
And he pulled out a cough drop…
And he TOOK it…
And it Stopped. That. Coffin!

In the silence that followed Winnie’s “dramatic” finish to her story (complete with jazz hands) Petie could swear he heard kricketot in the distance. He was too busy giving Winnie the flattest look he possibly could to acknowledge that though.
Even if it wasn’t a blatant rip off.” Rubbing his face with his paws in annoyance Petie continued “The only[/i[ way I can see that anti-climax working is if you did something like hand out candy to make-“
“I was gonna~”
