The morning sky had become heavy with gray clouds, the cold, howling winds a warning of an oncoming storm.
After hours of tracking Juno’s scent through multiple alleyways—avoiding any meat-addicts scrounging through the trash—Legosi found himself standing before an interspecies love hotel, recognizing it as the same one him and Haru had stayed in that night. A part of himself wanted to reminisce on that first night he’d spent with her, replaying each precious moment in his head, repeatedly. But he knew, with the situation he was in, every second counted, and he needed to focus entirely on Juno’s scent. Though, the fact that her scent had suddenly became so strong and trailed into the love hotel worried him. He remembered Gohin mentioning sex traffickers operating inside the love hotels, sometimes paying off the staff members to stay silent. There was a chance that he’d walk into a room full of males, with Juno strapped down to a bed, drugged and numb. The thought alone had his body tensing and his fur standing on end.
I need to be careful, then. He thought. If I charge in there recklessly, it could cost Juno’s life. And Louis’s happiness. He’d never forgive himself if that happened.
Entering the love hotel, Legosi made his way through the foyer, the zebra at the front desk too distracted by her phone to notice him. Slowly, he walked down the hall, blissful moans and deep grunts sounding from behind each flanking door, a heavy, arousing musk filling the space. He occasionally sniffed at the air, making sure he wasn’t wandering away from Juno’s scent. Though, as he moved further and further down the hall, her scent grew stronger, to the point that he didn’t even need to sniff intently at the air.
He was close.
Legosi stopped before one of the doors, sniffing at the air one last time, confirming to himself. The source of Juno’s scent was inside this room, but when he pressed his ear against the door, he didn’t hear anything. It was quiet. Too quiet. Had whoever kidnapped Juno discard her in this room. Dread crushed his stomach and a part of himself wanted to break into the room. But he breathed, calming himself.
Don’t rush in. Be thoughtful of every action—like Louis would.
Legosi examined the rickety door, noticing it was left ajar. He peeked into the room, looking for anybody who might be inside.
The room was empty, a queen-sized bed and a few chairs being the only object filling the space.
He pushed the door open, stepping inside, his head turning left and right as he scanned every corner—
His attention snapped towards the queen-sized bed, his eyes going wide at the bloodstain crusted into the sheets. It was then that Legosi realized the bed smelled heavily of Juno and Louis. Dear Rex, he thought, walking towards the bed, his gaze never leaving that bloodstain. He placed a hand against it, the blood cracking beneath his claws. Juno and Louis had used this bed, he thought, most likely as a way to end their date. Was Juno a virgin, then? I’ve heard about females bleeding on their first time, but… There was too much blood on the bed for it to have simply been from a female being deflowered. So, does that mean someone broke in and attacked them? The door was left open. Or… maybe…
He kneeled, balancing on one hand as he leaned in to smell the dried blood. Herbivore blood… No… Louis’s blood…
The realization that dawned on him, it was like a puzzle piece clicking into place.
Legosi slowly lifted his head away from the bloodstain, his expression one of shock. “Juno… Dear Rex…”
The more I think about him, the bigger my appetite…
I think I have an unconscious desire to eat him.
He stood to his feet; his eyes lingering on that bloodstain as guilt pierced his heart. His face tightened with pain. Juno, I’m sorry. I should’ve done more to help you; I should’ve given you better advice. He lowered his head, a frown on his lips. This is all my fault. I—…If he hadn’t been so reckless with Melon, then he wouldn’t have to be hiding out at the school. He could’ve made it to the black market quicker and possibly save Juno and Louis. And if he’d taken Juno’s love for Louis more seriously, maybe he could’ve taught her to have more control over her carnivorous instincts. Dammit. He wanted to use his strength to protect the mammals he loved, yet he continued to throw them in harm’s way, continued to fail them through his reckless actions. Legosi clenched his fist at his side, slowly lifting his head as he glared forward, a fire igniting within him. Juno… Louis… I’ll make it up to both of you, no matter the cost. I promise.
He branded that promise into his heart and soul, cutting off the guilt weighing on his heart. He needed to focus. Based on his own experience, he guessed that Juno had somehow stopped herself from eating Louis. Then, she must’ve ran back to the black market, he thought, to satisfy her newly awakened hunger—her newly awakened instincts. That must have been why she had a piece of meat in her hands; that must have been why she ran away from Bill before he could help her. She was experiencing the same emotions I felt, in that moment, when I first discovered my own instincts: guilt, shame… and fear. Legosi looked down at Juno’s dress, which was still folded over his forearm. I need to backtrack her scent to the black market and find a new trail, fast. He raised his forearm to his nose and sniffed at the dress, locking onto her scent. There’s still a chance I can find her and save her.
Quickly, he turned to leave the room, but before he could take a second step, he kicked something light and small. He paused abruptly, looking down at his foot for whatever he kicked. He perked up at the sight of the small purse—small by large-breed carnivore terms—the color of it a matching set to Juno’s dress. And laying alongside of the purse was a pair of panties and high heels. He reached down for the purse, ignoring the panties that smelled strongly of female arousal. He doubted he’d find anything useful inside her purse, still, he had to be sure. Sorry about this, Juno, he thought, before searching through her purse. Lipstick… perfume… a pack of gum… extra panties… a toothbrush… birth control pills… her phone. Her phone. Perfect. He slipped her phone from the purse and tapped on the screen.
The phone came to life, displaying a wallpaper of Juno and the other females in the drama club taking a group selfie.
With one swipe up, the phone unlocked itself, all her apps appearing at once. It did not come as a surprise to him that Juno didn’t have a password on her phone. Most canines didn’t bother having one, since their sociable nature made them very trusting of others. Still, he couldn’t ignore how wrong it felt searching through a girl’s phone.
He looked to straight to her iMessage’s, opening the app. The most recent one had been from Louis, about eight hours ago.
Louis: I’m almost there
All the other text messages were from friends or the drama club’s group chat. Legosi sighed, lightly tapping on the power button, putting the phone to rest. He slipped the phone into his pocket. Okay, I need to leave. I’m wasting time.
Though, his attention was drawn towards the bed and the bloodstain on it. Just in case. He snatched the sheet off the bed, bunching it up in his hand. I wouldn’t want Juno being arrested the moment we bring her back.
Bloody sheets in hand, Legosi left the love hotel.
….
Legosi stepped outside, his body perking up at the small droplets of rain trickling down from the caliginous clouds and the heavy rumble of thunder in the distance. The rains going to make it harder to track her scent. I need to hurry.
But his train of thought was broken when a broad body shoved past him. He blinked at the shove, his eyes flicking towards the mammal moving past him.
“Watch where you’re going, buddy.” A black wolf said as he sauntered into the foyer of the love hotel, his arm slung around a female okapi.
Legosi said, “ah, sorry about that—” Then he stopped, his nose twitching as a very familiar scent wafted into his nose. He closed his eyes, sniffing loudly, his body unconsciously walking towards the scent, tracking it. That scent… is that…
The black wolf, who’d just entered the foyer, paused at the sound of Legosi’s loud sniffing. He looked back towards the towering gray wolf, raising a brow. “Wolf.” He called out, but Legosi continued to walk towards him, his eyes closed and his nose twitching. “Hey, wolf, what the hell’s wrong with you—”
Legosi dashed forward, pressing his nose against the black wolf’s neck, lips, and chest, his canine brain slowly identifying the scent. The female okapi jumped away with a yelp; her hazel eyes wide with instinctual fear.
“WHAT THE FUCK! GET OFF OF ME, YOU FUCKING CREEP!” The black wolf roared and pushed him away.
Legosi stumbled back, his back slouched and his head lowered. Slowly—so, so slowly—he stood upright, his lips curling into a snarl. “Old Wolf.” He said, after a long moment. “Do you know a female named Juno?”
Glaring, the black wolf answered, “I have no idea who you’re talking about.”
Legosi met the black wolf’s glare, suddenly noticing the eyepatch over his left eye and the claw marks scattered around his muzzle. “Her scent is on you.” He said and tossed Juno’s dress towards him. The black wolf instinctively caught it. “And your scent is on her dress. You recognize it, don’t you?”
The black wolf dared a glance down at the dress, his snarl softening as his nose twitched, taking in its scent.
Legosi’s fingers curled at his side, his muscles tensing. “You’re going to tell me where she is. Right now.” In the corner of his eye, he saw the female zebra at the front desk run down the hall—most likely exiting out the back door. The female okapi followed suit, exiting out the front entrance. A prostitute, he guessed.
But the black wolf’s lips stretched into a wicked grin, his eyes once again meeting Legosi’s. “Juno—I remember her now. That cute little grey wolf. Are you her older brother—or her lover? I’m assuming the former, since she spent the whole night fucking with that little deer.”
“You mean Louis,” Legosi said, taking a cautious step forward. “When I found him, he was being hunted down by a brown bear. Did that bear work for you?”
The black wolf shrugged, as if he were having a casual conversation. “Probably not, I only took the female. I left the deer unconscious in the alleyway for another carnivore to have. But it sounds like he survived—or, at least, barely.”
Legosi leveled a glare at the wolf. This was the male, he realized without a doubt. This was the male that kidnapped Juno. This was the male that left Louis to die, to be hunted down and devoured by the carnivores in the black market. I have to restrain him and question him. This might be my only chance to save Juno.
“You know,” the black wolf said, his hand slowly slipping behind his back. “Juno had a very beautiful body. Her breasts were so soft and whole, like freshly made dough. I had a very good time with her.”
Legosi began walking towards the black wolf, his snout curling in anger. He dropped the bloody sheets to the floor. “Tell me where she is.”
The black wolf’s grin turned into a smile, exposing his fangs. “How about I send you to her, instead.”
In a flash of movement, the black wolf threw the red dress in Legosi’s line of sight.
Legosi saw the trap before it was set and dodged to the left, charging at the wolf, his eyes locked onto him.
The black wolf went wide eyed at Legosi’s speed, his quick, graceful movements like that of a trained hitwolf—a hitwolf sent to pick him off. His heart hammered in his chest as he took two steps back and whipped out a pistol.
But Legosi was already there, disarming the wolf of his pistol in two swift movements—before a single shot could be fired.
Disarmed and in shock, the black wolf roared as he lunged forward with his jaw, aiming directly for Legosi’s neck—a desperate attempt to kill his opponent.
Legosi gave him his forearm instead, grunting in pain as the wolf’s fangs pierced into his skin.
The black wolf bit down harder and harder, meaning to rip through the muscle and crush the bone beneath—
Legosi ripped his forearm from the black wolf’s mouth, striking him directly in the nose. A loud crack sounded.
The black wolf cried out in agony, blood spraying from his broken nose—
Legosi didn’t give him time to recover as he punched the black wolf’s muzzle, again and again, splitting the skin on his own knuckles.
The black wolf threw a weak, aimless punch. A punch that wasn’t even worth dodging.
Legosi hardly felt the impact of it as he grabbed the black wolf by the neck and threw him across the foyer.
The black wolf crashed against the far wall, leaving a large dent on its pink surface. Like a thrown rag doll, he slumped to the floor, limp, blood oozing onto his shirt.
Legosi walked up to him, looking down at the wolf. “Tell me where she is, old wolf.”
The black wolf sat up with a groan, resting his head back against the wall. He grinned weakly. “You know I consider myself a lucky male being able to fuck a bitch that beautiful. Still, the whole time I had her, she kept sobbing and pleading for me to stop, saying that I was hurting her.” A chuckle. “Turns out she was a virgin.”
Legosi grabbed him by his neck. “I said tell me where she—"
The black wolf slit a knife across Legosi’s throat.
Legosi fell back on his tail, eyes wide in panic as he took in sharp, deep gulps of air. He waited for the blood to flood his lungs and cut off his air. But it never came. Legosi removed his hands from his throat, touching at the deep cut there. If that knife had cut any deeper, he’d be on the floor in a pool of his own blood.
He heard the sound of heavy, rushed movements and his eyes flicked up to the black wolf, who’d sprinted out the exit of the love hotel. Legosi stood to his feet, grabbed the bloodstained sheets beside him and followed after the wolf, sprinting out the exit.
He stepped outside, looking left and right, but the black wolf was already gone. He cursed silently. The rain’s going make it hard to track his scent—
He caught of glimpse of the black wolf disappearing down one of the alleyways. Legosi charged for him at full speed.
He raced down the alleyway, vaulting over any trash pins or trash piles in his way, his eyes locked onto the black wolf’s sprinting figure.
He tossed the bloody sheets into one of the garbage bins, only giving it a glance to make sure it had completely fallen in the trash.
He saw the black wolf push past a couple kissing passionately at the end of the alleyway—a cheetah and a labrador. The black wolf turned left, disappearing around the corner.
“Sorry,” Legosi said to the couple as he ran past them, not even bothering to give a glance.
Legosi chased him through alleyway after alleyway, gradually closing the distance between them with each rushed step, being careful not to slip on the rain-coated concrete. Suddenly, he caught the heavy scent of gasoline and heard the sound of rumbling engines.
The next second, Legosi was chasing the black wolf through city central, right into heavy, morning traffic. The cars were moving slower than usual due to traffic, but they were still traveling fast enough to cause injury.
Dammit. If the police spot me—
A loud horn sounded, along with the screeching of brakes, and Legosi saw the black wolf stumble out the way of a car, narrowly missing it. But when the black wolf continued running forward through the traffic, he did not get as lucky with the next vehicle. The large truck slammed on its brakes but still knocked the black wolf to the wet concrete. Legosi was sure if a regular herbivore had been in the black wolf’s position, it would’ve been an instant death. A carnivore’s body—especially one that regularly processes meat—tends to be more durable than an herbivore’s body. Gohin had once said to him.
Legosi increased his speed, entering into the heavy traffic. Now is my chance to get him. A loud horn sounded and Legosi jumped out the way of a car—a car that didn’t even bother slamming on the brakes and sped right past him.
Breathing heavily, Legosi looked up: the black wolf had already crossed the street, though there was a slight limp in his sprint, taking away some of his speed.
Perfect.
Legosi dodged and jumped his way through the traffic, stepping onto the sidewalk and continuing the chase. He spotted the black wolf entering into an aged apartment building.
Is that where he lives?
Legosi entered into the apartment building through the rusted, metal doors, following the black wolf down the narrow hall.
He and the black wolf shoved past mammal after mammal standing in the narrow hallway, receiving shocked looks or vulgar curses. Legosi followed him into the main stairwell, running up flight after flight, his eyes locked onto the black wolf, never losing him for a second. The black wolf was a whole staircase above him, but with the injury he’d received, it made it easier for Legosi to keep up with him.
“You know, there’s no point in you chasing me.” The black wolf shouted from above, his every word laced with heavy breathing. “She’s dead. I slit her throat with the same knife I almost killed you with.”
Legosi blocked out the words and continued to chase the black wolf. Don’t lose him.
He followed the black wolf, flight after flight, those words echoing in his head. Am I really too late to save Juno? Did he already kill her? Legosi focused on his breathing as he ran up the steps, taking his mind away from the dreadful thoughts.
Then, Legosi heard a metal door slamming open, on the floor right above him. He rushed up the staircase and slammed through that same metal door, marked with a number eight, before entering the hall.
His gaze snapped to the black wolf, who’d just entered one of the flanking doors at the end of the hall, closing it.
His apartment?
Legosi raced down the hall and grabbed at the metal handle of the door. The handle remained stuck in place. It was locked.
In two kicks, Legosi broke through the door and entered the apartment. It was dark, the only light source being the small streams of gray peeking in through the curtain-covered windows. He found himself being thankful for his night vision as he scanned over the space. The layout of the black wolf’s apartment was simple. To the left of the apartment was the living room, filled with a few small couches and a flat screen, and to the right was the kitchen, a pile of dishes remaining in the sink. But what really caught Legosi’s attention was the dining room right in the center of the apartment. There were four chairs placed around the small, fake-oakwood table, as if more than one person lived here. Legosi might’ve thought the black wolf had led him into an apartment filled with his “co-workers”, but then he saw the children’s toys scattered around the living room’s carpet floor.
Does… does this old wolf have a family? Then, why would he lead me here?
He shook off the thought. He’d contemplate it later.
He cautiously walked deeper into the apartment, the floor occasionally groaning and creaking beneath his feet.
From outside, a deep growl of thunder sounded, reverberating through the apartment. The plates and pots scattered throughout the small kitchen rattled with the vibrations, as a gale of wind pushed against the windows, the glass creaking.
Legosi’s ears remained perked high, his nose twitching as he tried to lock onto the black wolf’s scent—but his scent was everywhere, in the furniture, floors and walls, along with a few other unrecognizable scents. He wouldn’t be able to properly track the black wolf through his own home. hen
Then, Legosi heard a click from a hallway located right beside the kitchen, the sound emitting from the door at the very end.
Legosi raced down the small hallway, his every footstep a monstrous boom on the carpet floors.
He broke through the cheap, wooden bedroom door with ease, his predator eyes scanning—
Legosi spotted the black wolf climbing up a ladder, which lead into a trap door in the roof—most likely how the black wolf was going to get away.
The black wolf’s head snapped in his direction, fear and anger gleaming in his eyes—
Legosi sprinted across the room with vicious precision and speed, snatching the black wolf by his tail. His muzzle curled in feral anger as he ripped the black wolf from the ladder and threw him to the carpet floor, the surface covered the with clothes and trash. A messy room.
The black wolf stunned, Legosi kicked him in his side and mounted him. He clasped his hands around the black wolf’s throat and squeezed down with all his strength, meaning to knock him unconscious.
The black wolf gaped for air, his body squirming beneath Legosi’s weight—
He pulled out his knife, striking directly for Legosi’s neck.
Legosi caught the black wolf’s wrist at the last second, barely avoiding his neck getting slashed open.
The black wolf struggled against him; teeth bared. He slipped his other hand free and punched Legosi in the nose.
Legosi grunted in pain, his grip on the black wolf’s wrist loosening—
The black wolf freed his wrist and plunged the knife into Legosi’s shoulder.
Legosi cried out in pain, his eyes watering as the black wolf slowly twisted the knife, the blade sinking deeper into his shoulder. His flesh squelched and strained against the knife, blood dripping down his arm, staining his shirt, his white fur. He tried to grab the black wolf’s wrist, but his vision flashed white as he was punched in the nose.
A smile stretched on the black wolf’s lips as he shoved Legosi away and kicked him in his chest, knocking him on his back—leaving the knife longed in his shoulder.
He dashed into a sprint out of the room and said, mockingly, “Juno screamed the same way when I killed her. I guess you two really are related.”
The mocking words made Legosi’s fur stand on end, made his jaw clench down so hard that a part of him thought the retainers might snap. His claws pierced into the carpet, leaving tears in the surface. “I made you a promise, Louis… Juno.” He glared forward at the black wolf, who was grabbing at the front door’s handle, opening it. “And I’m not going to break it.”
The knife still stuck in his shoulder, he charged down the hallway, directly for the black wolf.
The black wolf was just about to step out of the apartment before Legosi punched him in the back of the head, once, twice, thrice—stunning him.
He pulled him back into the apartment, kicking the door closed with a slam. Legosi clasped his hands around the back of the black wolf’s neck and kneed him in the stomach.
The black wolf—
Legosi threw him to the ground, right on his belly, and mounted him once more. He grabbed his right arm—his dominant arm—and turned it in a horribly wrong direction.
There was a snap and the black wolf screamed in agony.
Legosi flipped him on his back and punched him in his already-broken nose, again and again and again and again—
One of the black wolf’s fangs flew from his mouth, skidding along the dining room’s tiled floor, a trail of blood behind it.
By the final punch, the black wolf was unconscious, blood sprayed over his muzzle, his mouth gaped open.
Breathing heavily, Legosi stood to his feet. He pulled the knife from his shoulder, his face tightening in pain as he yanked it from his flesh. The knife clattered to the floor, spraying specks of blood across the tile.
Legosi gazed down at the black wolf’s unconscious form, his vile words echoing through his head.
Did he really kill her… rape her? He discarded the thought, pulling out Juno’s phone from his pocket, unlocking it with a swipe and going straight to her contacts. I need to let Bill know that I caught the kidnapper; it’s going to be a while before the old wolf wakes up.
Legosi pressed on Bill’s contact and put the phone against his ear, grunting at the movement.
The phone only ringed once before it was answered.
….
Legosi, bring her back safe. Please.
Louis gazed out the gardening shed’s glass sliding door, watching as the dark, gloomy clouds drifted across the sky, his expression solemn.
His stomach grumbled with hunger and churned with dread, causing him the dullest, yet noticeable, amounts of pain. He placed a shaky hand over his abdomen.
He hadn’t eaten since before his date and he’d refused any food the nurses had offered him. He couldn’t bring himself to eat anything, not with that horrifying memory lingering in his mind. A memory of the black wolf strangling Juno in that small alleyway, her muzzle covered in blood and her dress in shreds. Every time that memory flashed across his vision, he felt shame and guilt and self-loathing weigh heavy on his mind, causing him more stress, more agony. And after Bill had finished explaining everything that’d happened while he was blacked out, it only became worse. Raped. Killed. Kidnapped. The three words echoed through his head—over and over and over—and it brought him to the verge of breaking down in that hospital bed, but Louis managed to calm himself. He eyed Bill, noting the bags under his eyes and the exhaustion emitting from his posture, before telling him to return to his dorm room—and rest. The tiger had immediately protested, but he said, matter-of-factly, “you look like shit, Bill.” The tiger opened his mouth then closed it, looking down at the floor. “If we return to the black market for Legosi, you won’t be able to help anybody half asleep. Get some rest and let me know if anything comes up. I’ll be staying in the gardening club’s shed; in case you need me.” It’d taken all his willpower to keep his voice strong and stable.
Bill had simply nodded and left the infirmary, his head hung low.
Louis lifted his small, pathetic hand from his stomach, gazing down at the scabbed skin on his knuckles. The memory of the black wolf strangling Juno flashed across his vision once more, and he clenched his fist, the scabs burning with the action. His head snapped up and he looked at his faded reflection in the glass, his eyes flicking to the large bruise on the side of his face and the bandages wrapped around his head—covering the stumps where his antlers had been. An image flashed before his vision again, but it was one of the black wolf raping her, forcing himself into her as she screamed and sobbed—
He closed the green curtains with trembling hands and turned on his heels, walking towards the small bed him and Haru had made love in countless times.
“Haru,” he mused and clenched his hand into a tight fist.
Why can’t I protect the ones I love?
He sat on the edge of the small bed and cupped his face in his hands. Was it his fate to live alone and unhappy, simply because he was too weak to protect the mammals he loved?
Louis’s eyes began to burn beneath his eyelids.
He loved her—he loved Juno. And he’d promised himself to protect her, for all the mammals he’d lost before her. His father. Tem. Ibuki. He’d promised them, and yet, he destroyed that promised just as quickly. He’d watched it be destroyed… because he’d been too weak to stop it. Again.
Suddenly, he was standing before the Lion Mayor, hearing the terrifying news of Haru being kidnapped, powerless to do anything about it.
That same image of Juno being strangled flashed before his vision.
Maybe it was truly his fate to be alone and unloved. Maybe he should accept that fate and forget Juno entirely—leave her to her own fate (Legosi would save her). He should return to The Horns Conglomerates and continue to build his father’s name. He should reestablish his engagement with Azuki and claim a higher standing in society.
He lifted his head from his hands, a deep frown on his lips. All the loved ones he’d lost in his life… that had to be fate’s way of telling him he didn’t need love… he didn’t deserve it. His purpose in life was to make The Horns Conglomerates great and bring success to his father’s name…
… A tear streamed down Louis’s bruised cheek.
That was his purpose in life… right?
Right?
How you live your life isn’t up to society, it’s up to you!
The sound of her beautiful voice… it was like a bolt through his chest. A bolt that spoke truth to him and vanquished the lies slowly consuming his mind, his heart.
He remembered the words he’d spoken to her inside that cold, dark cell. I want you to be apart of my life, Juno. No matter the consequences we face together, I only want you. He’d meant every word. He wanted to be with her. He wanted to be happy, with her by his side. He didn’t want to be alone, surrounded by mammals who didn’t care whether he was alive or no, whether he was happy or depressed.
He—
Louis clenched his jaw and hung his head low, a sob breaking through his throat. “I’m tired of being alone.” He whimpered. “I’m tired of being unhappy.” Another sob broke from him, and he leaned over, a hand clutching at his chest. “I don’t want to live like this anymore.” He began sobbing altogether, his tears slipping from between his hands and onto the wooden floor below. “I love you, Juno.” His breath hitched. “And I’m sorry.” Another sob. “I’m so sorry.” He’d almost chose to give up on her, he’d almost chose to abandon her—just like he’d done Haru. Louis’s fingers curled into his head, anger boiling within him. He wasn’t going to abandon another female he loved. Never again.
He wanted to truly fight for what he loved, for what he wanted. Not for society, not for a legacy, but for himself.
For Juno.
His sobs soon died down. And slowly—so, so slowly—Louis lifted his head from his hands and glared forward. A fire exploded within him. “And I’m tired of accepting that I’m weak.”
Louis stood to his feet; his fists clenched at his sides. “I’m tired of watching the mammals I love die.” And he didn’t care if he had to make a full sprint for the black market, he’d save her with his own strength.
He’d fight for her.
There was a loud knock from the glass-sliding door and Louis snapped up. Was it Bill—or Legosi?
Legosi holding Juno in his arms… it was a thought that crossed his mind and heart began to pounding in his chest.
He dried his eyes and cleared his throat before walking up to curtains. He slid them open, grunting in pain at the movement—
Louis blinked at the mammal that stood there, on the other side of the glass. He opened the glass sliding-door. “Ellen.” He immediately noticed her longer mane—which flowed down to the tip of her nose, making her look more attractive than she already was—and her small, newly developed breast. He quickly averted her eyes from them.
“Hey, Louis,” the zebra said, softly, grabbing at her other arm. “Long time no see.”
“You don’t look surprised to see me,” was Louis’s only response. He crossed his arms. “I’m guessing Bill’s the reason why.”
She chuckled, a small smile on her lips. “It wasn’t his fault, not entirely; I was the one who walked into the infirmary and saw you in that hospital bed. But…” Her smile vanished and her stone-gray eyes met Louis’s hazel. “Bill told me everything, Louis.”
Louis cursed under his breath, inwardly facepalming. Why did I assume that big cat would keep his mouth shut? He hadn’t wanted anyone else carrying the burden of Juno being missing, especially the females of the drama club. He knew how close they were and the bond they shared, in or out of the club. A large part of him wanted to go across Bill’s face for telling Ellen of Juno’s siltation. But he said, in a gentle tone, “Ellen, Juno’s going to be fine. Legosi stayed behind at the black market to search for her, and trust me, he’ll bring her back safe.”
Ellen nodded, a deep frown on her lips, her head lowered. “I know.”
“Who else in the drama club, or the school, knows about it.”
“Just… just me and Bill.”
Louis nodded, opening his mouth to say something but paused.
A stream of wind caught Ellen’s mane, blowing it across her face, covering her right eye. He found himself gazing at her, taking in her beautiful, black mane. She’d changed, he realized. He didn’t know how, but she had somehow changed. Strange, he thought. Throughout his years in drama club, he never gave any attention to Ellen in that regard. Maybe the way he viewed mammals—carnivores and herbivores—had changed as well. Legosi… Ibuki… Juno… carnivores that’d changed his life for the better, and he would forever be grateful to them.
“Louis,” Ellen said, after a moment. “I don’t think Legosi is going to be able to find Juno.”
Louis’s blood turned to ice in his veins. “What? What do you mean?”
Ellen’s expression hardened, the stripes on her face flexing. “I think I might know where Juno was taken.”
