He was relieved when he finally found her. She was walking down an empty, small strip, every store in the flanking area closed, the street lights lined down the middle of the walkway being the only light source.
His breathing heavy, Louis gazed at the female gray wolf as she walked away from him, her back straight and her chin high, despite how hurt she’d sounded not long ago.
Louis couldn’t help but admire her beauty, her gracefulness as she walked. She was such a beautiful creature, yet the claws on her fingertips and the fangs within her mouth were made to kill, to hunt—to hunt him. It made him feel so inferior to her, still, it also made him want her more.
He truly was a freak of nature.
Juno must’ve caught his scent, because she stopped walking, her head lowering, her tail going still and limp. She turned around and faced him, revealing the mistiness of her eyes, the multiple, black tear stains on her cheeks and the hurt on her expression.
A weight of guilt and self-hatred pressed down on his chest, making him clench his teeth. And in that moment, Louis wished he had claws, so he could rank them down his thin, pathetic skin.
Juno said, quietly, “I can walk myself back.” Slowly, she turned away from him—
“I’m not trying to push you away.” Louis blurted out, snapping from his trance, taking a step forward. “But you know, as well as I do, that a relationship between a deer and a wolf would destroy both of our lives. It would destroy your life, Juno.”
He heard the sound of her claws piercing leather. “You still think I don’t know anything, do you?” She turned back around, furious, blue eyes meeting a soft hazel, her muzzle curling in anger. “Did you really think I wasn’t aware of that? I know how much damage an interspecies relationship would cause in our lives, but I was willing to endure it all, for you.”
Louis took another step forward. “I don’t want you to become an outcast of society, Juno.”
“I don’t care what society thinks,” Juno snarled, in a tone that Louis was sure would’ve made some of the lions of the Shishigumi back away from her. “Society can throw all the persecution it wants at us for being in a relationship, but in the end, we’ll be great, we’ll be beyond its expectations. And I could care less about how much we’ll have to suffer to get to that point, as long as we’re together, as long as you stay with me.”
Louis gazed at her in awe, shock. How could he have been so blind to her ambition. The way she walked down the street with him, arm-in-arm, displaying interspecies intimacy to the public without a care in the world, with her chin held high. He truly believed that she didn’t have a clue what an interspecies relationship meant.
Louis lowered his head, looking away from her, silent, ashamed.
The female gray wolf finally broke the silence. “But you don’t view are relationship that way, do you? You say that you don’t want to push me away but I don’t believe you.”
Louis snapped up, dread coiling in his chest. “Juno—”
“If I actually had any value in your life, you wouldn’t care what society thinks, either. But since you do,” another tear streamed down her cheek, “I don’t want anything to do with you anymore. I’ll become great on my own.” She turned from him for the final time, walking away.
No… Please.
The words were a death sentence.
He truly wished Juno could lock her jaw around his throat and end his life, he’d at least die happier that way.
Louis felt tears staining his cheeks.
He heard a muffle sob come from Juno and he knew she could smell them, though she continued to walk away from him.
“Can I prove it to you.” He said, his voice cracking. “Can I prove how much I value you.”
She stopped walking.
“Let me show you where I was born.”
Slowly, she looked back at him, the agony on her face making his heart ache.
“The Black Market isn’t too far from here.”
Confusion gleamed in her blues, but she said, quietly, “okay.”
...
In the darkest hours of the night, the small spaces in the black market were filled with carnivores of every species, their maws gaped with hunger.
Louis breathed in deeply, calming himself as he led Juno down one of the slim ally ways that lead directly into the black market. He had to walk into the black-market stern, emotionless, like he was there for an important reason, or else he would be snatched up and most likely devoured on the spot.
And if I’m devoured, then I’ll never be able to show Juno how much I value her.
The thought had him glancing back at her, and he wasn’t surprised to see how tensed she was, walking. She kept her arms within safe distance of her stomach, to protect her vitals. And her shoulders were arched high, to protect her neck. She didn’t feel safe here at all.
Maybe a year ago, he would’ve thought Juno to feel right at home in the black market, but the time he spent as the boss of the Shishigumi had completely changed his perspective. Even carnivores could be preyed on at the black market, Ibuki had made that clear to him that night, when they conversated on the rooftop.
A part of him warmed at the memory of the male lion, a carnivore who was more of a father to him to then anyone in his life.
He cast the warm memories aside, for now.
Louis’s back straightened the moment they entered the large crowd of carnivores, his breathing becoming clumsy, unnatural. Though, his expression remained blank, he only unconsciously flinched whenever a carnivore brought their nose within inches of his neck.
Then, Louis’s ears suddenly perked up at a particular conversation.
“Hey, look at that pretty she-wolf over there, all dressed up. I wonder how much she’s going for?” A carnivore—a male wolf with black fur—said, a disgusting, lustful smile spreading on his lips.
The carnivore standing next to him, a gray wolf, gave the male a stern look. “Hey, cut it out, you got a wife at home.”
The wolf shrugged, his eyes following Juno’s every movement, looking over her ever curve. He said, lowly, as if he were talking more to himself than his friend, “She’ll never know.”
Juno clasped his hand in hers with a painfully tight grip, her claws slightly piercing his skin. He clenched his jaw and bared with the pain. She was scared, and he wasn’t surprised. Even a female as strong and as ambitious as her was made prey here.
He shouldn’t have brought her here; he was such a fool. Still, he knew if she didn’t want to be here, she wouldn’t have come with him to begin with.
Louis glanced back at her again. “Juno—“
“I’m fine.” She said, a small tremble in her voice. “Let’s keep going.”
He nodded and continued to lead her through the crowds.
