The car ride, to Louis’s surprise, hadn’t been as awkward as he had expected it to be. As always when they met up, Juno did most of the talking, telling him about anything new that was going on in Drama Club—or what was left of it after the segregation policy. She mostly talked about the daily activities of the club members, one of the subjects being on how everyone was impressed by Bill’s phenomenal leadership, some even comparing the bengal tiger’s technique to his own.
Louis raised a brow at that, a smile spreading on his lips. “Really? I’ll have to see Bill’s new leadership skills for myself, then.”
Juno’s expression lit up at the idea. She shifted positions in the seat, leaning towards him, her forearm meeting his on the small armrest between them. “Perfect! Maybe one day you can show up to one of our meetings and watch.”
Louis lifted his forearm from the arm rest, clutching the steering wheel in both hands.“Maybe, though managing my father’s company keeps me busy, so, I most likely won’t.” Why are you still talking to her like you want to push her away, idiot? He didn’t have to push her away anymore, he could finally embrace love and let it transform his life. He’d already told himself that he would try to build a relationship with her.
So, why… why was every word he spoke to her so cold and sharp, why couldn’t he show any affection?
“I hope you do make time for it,” she said, in that same cheerful tone she always used. Despite how cold he had just spoken to her, despite how uncaring—
“I’d be happy if you did, Louis.” She leaned away from him, placing both arms in her lap. “I’m sure everyone in the drama club would as well.”
I’d be happy if you did.
He tried to open his mouth and voice a single word to her, but he couldn’t. His expression remained blank and cold.
“I’ll see if I have the time for it,” were the only words he could force out of himself.
Perhaps it’d been another curse he was born with: to always push the people he loved away, to spend his life alone and miserable. If that were the case, he knew that it would take more than Legosi’s fangs to remove it this time.
Juno continued to talk to him about events in the drama club. This time, it’d been some gossip going around in the drama club, particularly about Bill and Ellen supposedly being former lovers in their middle school years.
“Really? I can’t say I was expecting that.” Louis said. “There was never a time where I didn’t see Bill and Ellen arguing like old some married couple. Guess that explains why.”
To his pleasure, Juno laughed.
And he placed his forearm back on the armrest.
...
If Juno’s back wasn’t pressed up against her tail—since the car wasn’t made for mammals with long tails—it would be wagging with excitement. There were nearly to the mystery restaurant that Louis wanted to take her to. She couldn’t wait to see it, canines loved going to new places and taking in all of the different smells.
Louis slowed the car, parking it in a tight spot on the side of the road as he announced, “the restaurant is only a few minutes from here. We’re going to walk the rest of the way.” He reached for the door handle, then paused like he had forgotten something, quickly looking back at her. “If—if that’s fine with you?”
He’s really trying not to make every word he says to me demanding and rude. Juno strapped her small red purse over her shoulder, her expression bright. “Of course, Louis.”
“I just wanted to let you know what we were doing,” he said, awkwardly, as if he were a high school kid talking to a girl for the first time. “I didn’t want your feet to hurt from walking too much in your heels.”
She chuckled. “I’m used to walking in heels, I’ll be fine.” There he goes, acting his age again.
Louis didn’t respond as he gazed at her, his expression lightening. A moment of silence passed between them. His hazel eyes traced her body, examining with admiration. Juno blushed, looking away from him.
“You seemed to have matured a little bit, Juno,” he said calmly, pulling the door handle and stepping out of the car.
Her muzzle gaped, surprised by what he said. “A-a little bit!”
“You don’t voice your thoughts as much as you used to, you’re more observant and contemplative now.” He shut the door, walking around the front of the car.
As he opened the passenger door for her, she mumbled, “I don’t know if I should take the fact that I talk less as a compliment or not, you’re so mean all the time.”
Louis closed the door, locking the car and looping her arm in his, his expression calm and soft as they walked down the sidewalk. “You become more attractive the more you mature.” He looked to her. “Is that a quality of female canines?”
Juno blushed heavily. “I’m… I’m not sure.” She stuttered. “Let’s get to the restaurant.”
Louis’s only response was a smile as they continued to walk to down the sidewalk, arm and arm.
...
As expected on a weekend night, the sidewalks were full of animals from every species walking past them. The animals that walked past didn’t even bother giving them a first glance, and those that did quickly snatched their attention away when Juno met their nosy stares.
A carnivore and an herbivore walking down the sidewalk together wasn’t uncommon, but walking arm-in-arm, displaying publicly that they were going out on a date, was different.
Juno had heard the stories of carnivore and herbivore couples being outcasted for simply wanting to be together. She had to admit, a part of her was frightened of wanting to start a relationship with a red deer, thinking of the harshness society would show them, the abuse they would suffer. She would most likely lose a lot of her friends and a lot of her status, but… if she got to be with Louis, she would bare it, for him.
Juno walked by Louis’s side with her chin high and her back straight, her vision focused in front of her. She did her best to mimic Louis’s poker face, though she had a feeling she was failing miserably.
If she had a mirror right now, she probably looked like a young pup standing on stage in front of an audience for the first time. Pathetic, Juno.
A tiger couple walked in their direction, the male dressed in a fine suit and the female in a void-black dress that exposed her breast and a little bit of her thighs. The female glanced directly at Juno multiple times, the tigress’s feline smile growing.
As they walked past them, Juno heard the female whisper, “I wonder when she’ll devour him?”
The male laughed. “Probably the moment they’re alone.”
The words were like a brand on her bare skin. It was a truth she always tried to keep imprisoned in the back of her mind: the reality that her body was built to hunt down and devour red deer, not fall in love with them. The reality that her hunting her instincts made her crave for his blood, his flesh, and if she lost control for one second—
No, don’t think about that.
Juno’s claws suddenly felt heavy at her fingertips, the sharpness of them no longer making her feel proud to be a wolf, but fearful of what she could do to the one she loved.
Maybe a year ago, she wouldn’t have even worried about losing control of herself, but the closer she grew to adulthood, the stronger that that voice in her head became—a voice she’d spent years trying to seal away, ignore. A voice that whispered for her to take Louis into an alley and devour him. Her carnivorous instincts.
“You know, I wouldn’t mind if you devoured me.” Louis said, plainly. He must’ve heard the female tiger’s whispering.
Juno snapped up. “What!?”
His eyes met hers and he didn’t smile. “If you were to pin me down right here and devour me, I’d only admire how beautiful your fangs looked, painted in my own blood.” He said to her, his memorizing eyes gazing out, in a daze. “I’d die a happy deer.”
Did he just say he would die happy if I devoured him? And why is he talking to me so genuinely? She shook off the thoughts as she said, “you can’t say stuff like that out loud! What if someone heard you?”
“I know,” he said, his hazel eyes warming, his expression softening. “But I wanted to tell you how I feel about you as a carnivore. I don’t fear you and I never will, Juno.”
I don’t fear you and I never will, Juno. The words warmed her chest, making a smile curl on her muzzle. It assured her, somehow, that there could be a bright future for them. The small fears and doubtful thoughts still lingered in the back of her mind but… she wanted to enjoy her date with Louis. And she decided that she wasn’t going to let the opinions of other stop her.
“Louis,” she said, her smile widening. “You’ve changed a lot, in a good way. I’m really happy for you.”
He smiled. “Me too.”
