Even after ending his engagement with Azuki—a decision that probably had his now-deceased father rolling in his grave—Louis remained unsure on whether he wanted to call off his date with Juno or not.
He drove through the city streets, his eyes focused on the road but his mind in a different world. He didn’t bother taking a limo, he didn’t feel like receiving strange looks from the driver when his date stepped into the vehicle. So, he decided driving her in a nice, expensive car would make a good second choice.
Still, he really wished he could have taken a limo, so he could spend the whole night gazing at her, taking in every one of her breath-taking expressions.
Louis lightly pressed down on the break, stopping at a red light, surrounded by heavy, weekend traffic. And in the corner of his eye, he could already see other mammals ogling his car. He ignored them. He was too deep in thought to give them his attention.
He found his thoughts circling back to his cancelled engagement with Azuki... and it made him nervous. It made him more nervous than he’d like to admit, because he could no longer use his fiancée as an escape, as an excuse, to detach himself from a relationship he was slowly attaching himself to.
No, wasn’t attaching himself to her, he’d realized that since his first kiss with her.
He was slowly falling in love with her, Juno, a beautiful female gray wolf who wore her heart on her sleeve and treated every mammal she met with kindness. It was a fact he could never deny, and yet, he hated himself for loving her. He knew the suffering and the rejection she would receive from society for being with him. He didn’t want her to be subjected to that, especially for him.
The traffic light flicked green and every car surrounding his began to budge forward, slowly accelerating. Louis lightly pressed on the gas pedal, his eyes remaining on the car in front of him.
Still, he remembered the words Juno had spoken to him, all those months ago, when they had first danced together that night.
How you live your life isn’t up to society, it’s up to you!
The words she had spoken to him that night lingered in the back of his mind, only resurfacing every time he saw her.
He wanted to believe that he could fall in love with her, he wanted to believe that they could be together and live happy. But ever since their first kiss, he had cast the thought aside as a fantasy, a lie he was telling himself.
It’s why he asked her out while they were in the café, because he wanted to believe in his fantasy, just this once.
But not tonight. He thought to himself. Tonight, he was going to take the first steps in starting a relationship with Juno. Tonight, he was going to turn his fantasy into something real.
...Still, uncertainty loomed over his mind.
...
Standing at the front entrance of Cherryton High, the spot where Louis agreed to pick her up, Juno was filled with excitement at the thought of her first date tonight.
Although, she felt a wave nervousness weighing down on her, making every limb on her body feel weak and flimsy—a very unwanted feeling for any carnivore. She thought back to when Louis first asked her out, in the little café they always had tea in, talking about their daily lives.
The offer had come out of nowhere—he had simply set down his iced tea, going silent for a moment, his hazel eyes staring out to nothing. When she gave him a look of concern, he looked her directly in the eyes and asked her on a date.
Juno had clasped her paws over her mouth, nearly spilling her iced tea, her tail wagging sporadically. Tears began to swell in her eyes as she replied, “yes! Yes, of course!” She was sure every onlooker in the café had thought the deer had asked her paw in marriage, but she could hardly care.
And Louis hadn’t seemed to care either as he gave her a genuinely warm smile, nodding his head.
Still, even with all of the excitement swirling within her at that moment, she noticed a shadow of sadness washing over his eyes but vanishing as fast as it appeared.
Seeing that bothered her, even now. It made her wonder why he asked her out to begin with, it made her wonder if Louis would truly be happy being with her?
She remembered all of those months ago, when he had dropped out of school and began intermixing with the black market, the true, deep unhappiness that shown in his eyes. She had seen it then, when they first danced together that night, she saw how every action, every smile he gave her, was faked, acted, as if he were on a stage, playing as a character that wasn’t even real.
It broke her heart, and she had silently cried herself to sleep in her dorm room.
She never wanted to see him fake a smile again, even if that meant not being with him. She cared for him and… she was prepared to accept the fact that a relationship between them would never work. It was why she was so nervous tonight. She wanted to be with Louis, but she also wanted him to be happy as well.
Juno heard her phone’s notification ring out from her small red purse, signaling a text had come in. She pulled her phone from her purse, her blue eyes going directly to Louis’s text.
I’m almost there, it read.
A smiled curved on Juno’s muzzle at the text, her tail beginning to wag. She was so excited.
But her smile slowly faded, her tail going still. She looked up to the beautiful night sky. “I want you to be happy, too, Louis.”
...
Two minutes later, and she was able to smell Louis’s car before the blinding headlights even became visible. Her tail began wagging again, her heart rate increasing and her stomach feeling jumpy. Calm down, Juno, she thought to herself, taking in a breath. It’s just Louis, you go out for tea with him all the time. No, this wasn’t just another occasional meeting at the café, she knew that. Tonight, they were taking the first steps in building a real relationship.
She did one last check on her appearance, straightening her brown, conditioned fur and red, flowing dress as the car neared, slowing to a halt by the sidewalk. And when the headlights were mostly out of her view, she was able to see the vehicle itself. Her eyes widened at the unique design of the black car. She wasn’t familiar enough with cars to know exactly what type it was, though, the brand on the bumper of it looked very familiar: Toyota.
The car came to a full stop before her. Juno breathed in and breathed out, calming herself; straightening her back and rolling her shoulders, she walked up to the car, her heels clicking against the concrete.
The door on the driver side clicked opened and Juno perked up as she heard him step out the car. And as he stood to his full height, it was his magnificent, strangely attractive pair of antlers that came into her view first. Then, she saw his hazel eyes and she couldn’t stop the smile that spread on her muzzle or the wagging of her tail as their gazes met. She was happy to see him.
He gave her a smile that mirrored the one at the café only a few days ago, but his eyes held something different this time: uncertainty.
Uncertainty for what?
Though, she didn’t have time to let the word sink in as he said, teasingly, “canines really can’t help but wear their emotions on their sleeves, can they? I can hear your tail wagging from here.”
Juno gave him a look of disbelief. “Is that how you greet your date!? You’re so mean.”
“I wasn’t trying to be,” he said. “But you can take what I said however you like.” He walked around the front of the car and to the passenger side, bending down slightly as he grabbed the door by the handle, opening it for her. “I’ve come to like canine’s open honesty of emotions through their tails, it’s an amazing quality.”
Juno blinked. Did Louis just give her an indirect complement? She always remembered the red deer to be cold and unfeeling at times, not caring how hurtful his words sounded. Something must’ve happened during those few weeks they were apart. It must’ve changed him, his mindset. First, he had asked her out on a date and now he was actually trying to give her complements. And he wasn’t trying to push her away either.
She smiled, a happy feeling warming her chest. “Thank you, Louis.”
I’m happy he’s trying to embrace change—even if it’s just a little.
Though her dress perfectly hugged every curve on her body, she was careful it didn’t get caught on anything as she stepped into the car. Once she was seated, impressed by how comfortable the leather seats were, Louis gently closed the passenger door for her.
The moment the door clicked closed, Juno inhaled deeply, trying to calm her racing heart. That feeling of nervousness suddenly returning to her mind. What if Louis didn’t love her for who she was. Just be yourself, Juno, she thought, reassuring herself. If Louis actually loves you, then he’ll love you for who you are.
That’s right, she just had to be herself tonight and let everything else play itself out.
The driver side door suddenly opened, and Juno stiffened as Louis gracefully stepped into the car, closing the door. “The restaurant I’m taking you to probably isn’t one you’re familiar with, but I think you’ll like it.”
Juno met his gaze at that. “Really!? Where!?” She asked, her canine curiosity already having her tail wagging.
He gave her a teasing smile—a smile. Louis was really smiling.
And then, “you’ll see.”
Juno gave him that same look of disbelief. “I don’t like to wait for surprises!” No canine liked to wait for a surprise, for that matter.
She continued to look at him, silently begging him to tell her. But when his smile grew and he reached for the transmission, setting the car to Drive and pulling off, she sat back in her seat, pouting. “You’re so mean, Louis.” The warm feeling of happiness remained in her chest, though.
Louis’s… his smiles, his movements, his expressions didn’t look tainted with despair or faked, they looked calm, at peace. He didn’t look exactly happy, though, as if there were still parts of himself, he hadn’t come to terms with. Whatever the case, she was glad.
Then, dread suddenly coiled in her stomach. A memory flashed through her mind—a memory of a cold, harsh face and a small, dark dungeon. Why am I remembering that now?
Juno blinked, pushing that memory into the deepest parts of her mind, ignoring it. She wanted to focus on only her date tonight and hope for the best.
