Letters to Levon the Christian Lion: #11
Hey Levon,
I work in a scrubs factory that caters to private clinical workers. Scrubs are comfortable, efficient, yet professional. Certain brands of scrubs have extra pockets for certain equipment, especially tablets, due to technology being prevalent in healthcare. Scrubs are extremely functional for clinical workers as well, allowing them to work with patients without worrying about their clothing getting in the way of their jobs.
I'm also a Christian and I saw this passage from Deuteronomy 22:5, which says this.
"A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this."
The thing with scrubs, and some other work uniforms, such as those who work in the factories, is that they are unisex in design so that they are easily mass-produced for anyone and helps keeps the cost for them as equal and low as possible for everybody. Now with casualwear, especially streetwear, the clothes are more defined for males and females. There are some clothes that are of course more unisex in design, especially for those who identify as non-binary. But the topic of this letter focuses on scrubs and unisex work uniforms than modern casual clothing.
Something to note that today's female nurses, including those in your country, wear scrubs instead of those old nursing dress uniforms, because not only does that help to make their jobs easier, but also a common practice accepted and encouraged by the international healthcare community. There are more male nurses around the world than before as well, even though females remain dominant in the nursing field.
So what do you think about the fact that most modern work uniforms, especially scrubs, are designed to be unisex for ease of production and cost control to help fulfill demands of rapidly growing occupations, such as healthcare?

Levon's reply:
Dear Francisco:
Thank you for writing to me, first of all. One thing you have to note about that verse is that parts of the Bible are refering to what was common back then, but do not necessarily apply to cultures today. I had another person write to me asking, "If Sunday (or Saturday to some people) is to be set apart as the Lord's Day, why is everything still open?" There is also a YouTube video that once claimed the Bible is repulsive for this reason. It's not. Yes; it's true that certain days are to be set apart as the Lord's Day, but the Lord does not judge it as a sin if certain businesses are open. People still need to eat and buy groceries.
I'm pretty sure God does detest certain parts of cross-dressing, such as when a man dresses in drag, for example, but He does not have problems with most modern work uniforms being unisex, because the main focus, I think, of those uniforms, is to represent what your job is and what you do in it; it's the same with police, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and the military. So I don't have any issues with it either. I'm just as thankful there are both men and women who do that; the world cannot function without them, and to serve in those manners should be nothing less than a divine privilege.
Hope that helps, and may the Lord bless you, your family, and your co-workers.

Chuong: Good response there! Note that some shoe companies, like Hoka, make unisex shoes as they're easier to produce efficiently and sell. They also make shoes for males and females too.
Zax: Our Christians would find that acceptable as well. It's usually things like drag queens that bother many Christians. Drag queens are more about performance than LGBTQ+ stuff yet somehow, people get the two mixed up.
Marshall: Oooh I got this one from here! People also confuse transgenderism with drag queens. Most transgenders do not do that stuff. There was a reason why people on the left decried Drag Queen Story Time too. That right there caused further confusion in the LGBTQ+ community. Most people who do the drag queen stuff are not transgenders.
Chuong and Zax: Okay that makes sense.

Leo: That's interesting.
Super Claw: Why people do the drag stuff in the first place is beyond my comprehension. Just dress as the gender you were born with, for crying out loud!

Some food for thought there. And I wasn't going to say you were arguing against it; I had the same idea. God puts people in authority positions for a reason.
Glad you did. I think I had intended to address that, but missed it.
