PAW Patrol (TAF: The Anthro Files)
Pups Save a Gymnastics Meet
Chapter 1
“PAW Patrol…and Cat Pack…to the Lookout!” Ryder called after sliding out the mechanism on his pup-pad and pressing the special button.
“Ryder needs us!” the pups exclaimed in unison. Not much had happened since they had just woken up five minutes prior to the summoning, but the pups nevertheless were as prepared as the minutemen of Colonial America were, and they showed it when they ran into the lookout. As always seemed to be the case, though, Marshall didn’t make it without crashing into everybody. This time, though, he tripped over a rugby ball, and so his comment was, “Sorry, pups; I just need to try harder not to do that!” Everybody laughed as the elevator went upwards.
The fact the Cat Pack was present was because they had previously spent the night at the Lookout after a long day of assisting the dogs in chasing off the Ruff Ruff Pack, although now it was just Hubcap and Gasket. (Hubcap fired Dwayne, leaving the Great Dane on his own, but he wasn’t bothered by it because he wanted out of the gang anyway.) Ryder also wanted to see if the effects of the meteor had spread to the other members of the PAW Patrol, given the circumstances, and so he flashed the special green light, prompting the pups to bark, “Ruff! Anthro mode!” The Cat Pack meowed and said the same thing afterwards, and then activated their own special gear, with Wild (also known as Wild Cat) in his Cheetah gear, Leo in his Lion gear, Rory in her tiger gear, and Shade in her jaguar gear.
When they got to the top of the Lookout, they lined up in formation and snapped to attention, and Chase announced, “PAW Patrol and Cat Pack ready for action, Ryder, sir!” Then they looked at themselves. “And in anthro mode!”
“I see that it’s gotten to us, too,” said Leo. Rory and Shade confirmed it as well.
“Thanks for coming, pups, and sorry to wake you up so early,” Ryder replied. “I did want to test this because I had made Wild an official member of the PAW Patrol, and it looks like it’s gotten to the Cat Pack as well. If you’re in the PAW Patrol, you can be an anthro, it looks like.” Indeed, Ryder had done this test previously with Liberty, the dog from Adventure City, and Al, the trucker dog (no relation to Farmer Al, despite sharing a name with him), and both got the same results. “However, that’s not the reason I actually called you up here.”
The tech-savvy 10-year-old boy then brought down the screen and showed the pups a replay of what had happened. “You might remember that we had previously traveled to Kensington when we had to watch Mayor Goodway testify in court against Mayor Humdinger, and he is spending the rest of his life in jail.”
“What a day that was for all of us, no doubt,” Chase commented. “He was really starting to get on our nerves.”
“I know, and I’m proud of all you pups for being willing to act as witnesses when necessary. However, he’s gone now, so we know he’s not the problem. His Kitten Catastrophe Crew, however, has a history of breaking out of the jail that they were in, and the city called me to tell me that they broke into Kensington Arena, which is where we are going to have the latest gymnastics meet. And here’s the surprise I was alluding to earlier: it’s you pups that are going to compete!” (Ryder had previously told the pups to train hard on various exercises and tricks without telling them why, and they went along with the fact. Marshall, rather predictably, had the most problems with it due to his clumsiness, but he was still doing his best. “Too bad it isn’t a pup-fu competition,” he remarked, “because then I’d ace it. Oh, well. It’s fun to learn new things.”)
The pups howled with excitement, and the Cat Pack was just as happy for them. “Why us, though?” Rocky asked.
“The humans already had their competition, but the judges wanted to invite you pups to do this and see how you got on, since Kensington was so happy to meet you the day the judge sentenced Mayor Humdinger to life in prison. However, his kittens have sabotaged the arena, and we need to put it back together and get them back in jail before they cause any more damage to the city. The difference is that their doing this on their own without Mayor Humdinger giving them instructions. And because you pups get to compete in all the different events, I’ll need all pups on deck. Therefore, we’ll also get Everest, Tracker, Tuck and Ella to join us. Oh, and let’s not forget about Rex.” (Due to being a paraplegic, Rex declined to participate in the meet; however, he still found ways to stay healthy and exercise, and so he would attend the meet and support his fellow pups.)
“Do the cats get to compete?” Skye asked.
“I don’t know. I forgot to ask.”
“If not,” said Leo, “we’re not bothered by it. We’ll cheer our pup pals to victory!” The pups howled again.
Ryder then slid the pictures on his pup-pad until he found the pictures he wanted in order to give instructions. “I am going to need all paws on deck for this mission,” he said, “but to be specific, I’ll need you, Skye, to fly your helicopter around Kensington and search for the kittens in case they’re causing trouble somewhere else.”
“This puppy’s gotta fly!” Skye cheered, doing a backflip.
“Chase, I need you to drive your police car around town as backup.”
“Chase is on the case!”
“Rocky and Rubble, I need you two to help with the repairs, since the kittens damaged everything on the podium.”
“Green means go!” Rocky cheered.
“Rubble on the double!” Rubble echoed. “Uh, but where’s the podium? Isn’t that what you stand on after you win a medal?”
“It is, but I think the official word for that is the word ‘rostrum.’ In gymnastics, the podium is the area where all the events happen.”
“Oh, I see. I’m not familiar with the sport. I just know soccer, basketball, baseball, and then rugby since we were playing that the other day.” (Indeed, Ryder had taught the pups how to play rugby sevens since the players who made up the Foggy Bottom Boomers had all moved to Kensington. Although the pups did not win that game, it was played as a fair game because Humdinger wasn’t there to cheat or egg his players on into cheating as he did at the basketball game, when he told one of his players to intentionally trip Rocky and Zuma, putting them out of the game. Marshall got them the treatment they needed, and then participated himself, ultimately winning the game, even if he did so by accident.)
“That’s okay. The rest of you pups can help with the setup as well, and Cat Pack, you can come, too. I’ll give you further instructions as we go along, but for now, let’s get our vehicles and store them in the PAW Patroller.”
“We’re on it!” all the pups and cats announced.
“All right; PAW Patrol and the Cat Pack are on a roll!” Ryder announced as he ran to the pole and slid down it. The Cat Pack jumped and slid down the same pole since their vehicles were stored inside the garage at the bottom, while the pups took turns sliding down the slide and landing in their vehicles. Because they were appearing as anthro pups and not their regular versions where they would walk on all fours, the vehicles were already transformed into their modes necessary.
Ryder, meanwhile, got Robo-Dog to drive the Patroller into position so that they could drive their vehicles inside, and store them in the proper place. Then the robot dog drove the vehicle so that the pups could drive inside and store them as well, and Skye flew her copter down from the top. The group then drove off to pick up the other pups, but since they didn’t have the Dino Patroller with them, the Turbots had dropped Rex and his vehicle off at Jake’s chalet. (The Turbots texted Ryder to let him know they did this, so that nobody was surprised when the truck arrived at the chalet and saw that Rex was there talking to Everest. The two didn’t activate their anthro modes until the truck arrived, and the twins did likewise when the PAW Patrol found them at their home. The last to board the truck was Tracker, whom they found in the jungle with Carlos.)
After the whole PAW Patrol was on board, the Princess of Barkingburg gave them call. “Due to the fact she’s also able to turn herself into an anthro, and seeing how she has helped protect the Kingdom of Barkingburg, Sweetie is also participating in the gymnastics meet,” she announced. “We hope to see you there.”
“We’ll be glad to see you, too, Princess,” Ryder replied.
“And I promise I will not think about becoming queen, although I do still dream about it,” Sweetie added when she got herself in the picture. “Still, I want to do Barkingburg proud. I’m at a disadvantage, though; I’m their only representative, whereas all of you represent Adventure Bay. I think. I don’t know; I may be wrong.”
“Not sure about that; I think Liberty might represent Adventure City if she participates. That’s her primary home.”
“I see. Who are your new friends?”
“This is the Cat Pack.” Wild then introduced each of the cats to Sweetie, and in return, she explained her role as the royal pup (as well as what she was willing to confess about her schemes to become the Queen of Barkingburg instead of the Princess, who was really destined to become Queen).
“Wonderful to meet you all; we’ll look forward to meeting you in person,” the Earl of Barkingburg commented. “See you there.”
“You too; thank you, Your Earlness.” The link broke off, and everybody continued the drive to Kensington while enjoying each other’s company, and the occasional rerun of “Apollo the Super-Pup.”
