Well, This was a bit of an experiment. An exercise, really.
I went back through an older story of mine a couple days ago. This one was done for a Thursday Writing Prompt many moons ago. I've left the original in my gallery if you really want to go back and compare that one to this one, though I'd be a little embarrassed if you did.
I hope I've improved a few things compared to my last effort. I'm really concentrating on clarifying the protagonist's improvement and the conflict within these stories. I also hope I've made some of the scenery descriptions a bit better, though I'm back and forth on that.
Please, enjoy. And If you have any critiques or criticism, please give them to me. Thank you, everyone!

“I don't even understand why they're here.” 982 grumbled. Every single time.

I'll show you a 'routine' 698, you smug metallic," ? I'll show you a 'routine' 698, you smug metallic..."
Far better conflict through character. let to clearer resolution too.

A few things mainly about reality of space
"There was no problems as long as you stuck to the designated routes"
Space lanes don't really make sense, if in a star system your more just speeding up your orbit around the star to move outwards or slowing down to get closer, and similar if interstellar just instead your now orbiting the galatic core. If theoritically at FTL speeds then the curvature of the orbit just gets more and more straight. So having "lanes" in the 3D environment of space is not really practical or even needed.
"Space was extremely cold/fifteen minutes and he was done for"
This is much more a technicality as Space is a near vaccum, so there's nothing to really be cold while just in space, it's like "water isn't wet but has to ability to make things wet". Because it's a near vaccum the transfer and disappation of heat is extremely slow, as there's nothing for the heat to escape into except to go away in the form of black body radiation, basically heat throwing out the energy in the form of infrared wave length photons which can take extremely long. So if 982 had a starting temperature of let's say room temp 72°F and some power source that produced heat that was whisked away in a ship through things like cooling fans, there's a possibility that his temperature could reach equilibrium well above the -455°F of space and maintain operation.
But still a very enjoyable little read, few characters to get tangled up in drama and no deep dive into backstroy to clog time or ruin pacing

Good to know.
I was mainly thinking about how airports do flightpaths when I mentioned lanes, for the sake of keeping things organized in busier sectors, I figured they'd do something similar to keep things organized and prevent incidents.
That is a good point about the heat though, I'll keep that in mind for next time I do a space faring story.
Thanks again.

NP, another big reason why they prolky won't ever do "shipping lanes" in the sorts for Space travel is the fact that space is, quite literally, astronomically big. When astronomers and astrophysicists say things like "dense asteroid belt" it's a very relative term, as they can still be MILLIONS of miles apart where you can be in the middle of it and not know about it.
Well, it is and you are absolutely correct about space being huge. It's something to think about.
