[2023] Lourylisa - Steef OC (Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath)
She's a steef!
Meet Lourylisa (a.k.a. Lori) product of a nostalgia-fueled burst of inspiration. I used to watch my dad play the first four Oddworld games all the time when I was a kid, and eventually played them all myself, with Stranger's Wrath becoming probably my favorite game of all time (right next to the Donkey Kong Country trilogy). More than anything when I was younger I wanted there to be more content involving the Stranger and steef in general, but Oddworld Inhabitants never returned to Stranger or his story, so I turned to fan content (which there wasn't a whole lot of back in the 00s, though what was there was held up by a small but aggressively passionate group of fans). Having recently rediscovered Stranger's Wrath fan content over a decade later, I decided to make a little contribution of my own, and so Lori was born!
Here's her story so far: When the group of Grubbs and land she once protected were destroyed by outlaws, Lori fled eastward, finding herself in the badlands between Necrum and RuptureFarms. No one knows what horrors she witnessed in those hellscapes (well, perhaps we have some idea), but her soul bears the scars, and she later returned to western Mudos a changed steef. After a difficult journey through Paramonia and the wastelands just outside RuptureFarms, Lori eventually ended up in Gizzard Gulch, where she was forced to hide her legs or end up as somebody's home decor. She wandered, aimless and penniless, from town to town until someone mistook her for the relative of a famous bounty hunter who had recently come through. Quickly realizing that this was another steef, Lori followed the bounty hunter's trail with a new vigor, hoping that they might form a team. She nearly caught up with him at the old shipwreck outside Buzzardton, arriving just following the decimation of the outlaw camp there. Before she could figure out where he went, however, she was distracted by the sound of sobs on the wind, and came upon a baby... a child of outlaws... wrapped up in the arms of one of his dying brothers. The brother, after first mistaking her for their assailant, all but begged her to take care of the baby. Unable to reject her guardian nature, Lori swears to take care of the child, who is named Izerro. Though Izerro should represent everything Lori despises, she learns to love him, and her love turns ferocious; anyone who so much as looks at that child funny finds themselves at the wrong end of a sharp or blunt object.
Lori has not fully given up on her quest to find the mysterious Stranger, but she treads carefully, unwilling to let her child face the hardships she did. She is confident that the world will destroy him, as her beloved Grubbs were once destroyed, if she even blinks.
On her design: In the finished game, it should be noted that the steef's full horns are almost ram-like as far as we're shown, but a lot of concept art for Stranger's Wrath depicted steef with a myriad of horn styles, some of which looked more like antlers. I decided to give Lori antlers, or a single antler, rather! She lost the other one and it never regrew. Her muzzle is also a bit longer than the steef in the game. The teal streaks in her hair weren't originally a part of the plan, but I think they work really well with the rest of the design regardless of how they fit the world.
Also please, I implore you, if you've never heard of or played Stranger's Wrath before (or any of the Oddworld games, for that matter) GO DO SO. They are visually stunning and delightfully bizarre, plus very dark and anti-big corporations/destruction of nature to fuel supply and demand. Believe me, they're a wild ride you won't regret.
