Not Dead Yet: Front Line Assembly - Denver, 5-12-2023
Ever since the fucking pandemic came along to throw a big handful of shit into the world and shake it up, I hadn't been getting out too much. A big surprise I know, but I've started to emerge and see the sun every now and then. About a week ago I could be found in the Denver area-- not really as recreation, but I did manage to enjoy some of the time casually while I was there.
I have a cousin that lives in the area and he's always been great about letting me stay at his place, which is a great help in keeping costs down. I love my cousin, but this time he said he was sick, and that his girlfriend had just gotten over being sick. "Is it covid?" I asked. "Nope, just some upper respiratory thing." Me: *blink, blink*. I held my tongue as he described all the symptoms of *EXACTLY* what covid embodies. So anyway, not able to stay over at his place this time.
However, we still hung out: he in his kerchief and I in my mask (not really, no kerchief was worn) over several evenings. One night his girlfriend asked me if I was busy that coming Friday and if I liked techno music. I said "Sure, I like techno."
"We're going to see Front Line Assembly on Friday if you want to go."
"Absolutely," I said excitedly, "However, Front Line Assembly ain't exactly techno, it's industrial. A bit harder than most techno. Anyway, fuck the details, I'd love to go!"
So by some xmas miracle, we found a parking spot within less than 2 blocks from the venue (seriously, a fucking miracle!) and I got to see FLA for the first time in about 20 years, which was awesome. I had no idea they were in the area and I really don't watch for shows much because no one ever plays anywhere near Iowa. You have to go to the Twit Cities to find any good shows and that's a LOT of driving from here.
There were 3 DJs before the opener, and they were rattling the windows nicely in the old warehouse the venue now occupied. The opening band was Whorticulture, a Denver local group, and they were pretty good, and an appropriate lead-in to FLA though I'm not real keen on the name.
Was a good show, and while I'm not inclined to dance anymore, I did tap my foot and nod along while the younger crowd kept things suitably energized and a bit weird. Perfect. =3
I stood back and enjoyed my buzz while the show and the LOUD electronic mayhem pushed all the troubles from my head for a bit. Delightful...
To the boy in the blue knit cap: Thanks for giving me something nice to watch during the show. ^^
