Monster Hunter Rise: Braxton and Duke
After the Halloween mishap of Chance stink cratering Arminus in the ground, both have let bygones be bygones after giving each other a round of apologies and conversations, specifically about fun videogames. Simple as it sounds, both share their likes and dislikes of the games they’ve played, seen, and/or heard of. They even go far as to imagine their own game ideas too. Chance is more into syfy third person fighter games rather 2D platform or 3D platform. Arminus chills with Syfy but has taken a liking to medieval fantasy games with grinding, builds, and outfit fashion designs. Though the texture of each game is different, both gamers share their favorite feature… Cooperative game play. From funny chats to strategic comms, they always have a thrill when playing with other’s online. Through the good and bad game runs, talking everything out is a nice relief for each of them.
This gives Arminus an idea, he wants to give this 8ft colossal chubby kangaroo a grand coop time on a fighting game he likes, with a fantasy theme Arminus likes. And Chance doesn’t know about Arminus’s game rendering traitl either. Long story short, Arminus can render himself into any game of his choice. Taking the role of the main character, or side character of whatever game he goes into. He hasn’t tried rendering himself and a friend in, but what’s the worst that can happen. Right?
*Present*
While getting his game system set up in his living room, Arminus hears (and feels) a familiar hopping pattern getting closer to his front door. He stops what he does and rushes to open the front door. As Arminus opens it, the burly banana shade yellow kangaroo pauses himself baffled. Wearing a red hoody and grey sweatpants, Chance didn’t even knock on the door yet before Arminus opened it. Chance only moves his eyes down to see Arminus smiling like a chipper child. “Chance, perfect. Glad you’re here.” Arminus greets to Chance’s arrival, “Sup Arminus, I didn’t even knock yet. How did you…” Arminus finishes his sentence. “…know you were coming. I heard you hopping over, not hard to miss. But that doesn’t matter right now I need you to… tell me what’s on your head?"
Before Arminus explains his invitation, he realizes Chance has a headset over his ears blaring music. “Oh yeah, I’m listening to ‘Too Hot for TV’ on my cassette tape.” Chance answers as he pulls out his cassette walker from his hoodie pocket. Arminus notices the loud music, catchy bass line, slick electric rift, and drums that are a real head-banger. He catches himself nodding to the music, only to remember why he invited Chance. “I thought that was a gaming headset, that would have ruined my surprise.” Arminus said with relief crossing his arms. “What surprise?” Chance pries, while continuing to listen to his headset. “Right this way my good sir.” Arminus side steps and waves his arm towards the living room with exaggeration and energy to let Chance in.
Rasing an eyebrow at Arminus’s behavior, Chance walks in as Arminus closes the door behind him. Arriving in the living room, Chance pops a seat in Arminus’s normal sized recliner. But after a try, or three, Chance firmly fits his flank into the chair. Leaving his love handles draping over the sides and his tail sticking up to touch the back of his head. “Don’t make yourself to comfy Chance, my surprise will leave ya jumping.” Arminus jokes with Chance, who is paying half attention because of the music in his ears. “Wait, you want me to jump?” Chance questions. Arminus rolls his eyes and points to his head while looking at Chance. Chance gets the messages, pauses his Walkman, and takes the headset off. “No Chance you don’t need to jump. At least not yet.” Arminus chuckles at his excitement to finally reveal his surprise to Chance.
“Well then ‘Giggly Gonzales’, what’s gotcha so peppy?” Chance incites, seeing Arminus becoming more and more eager to reveal something. “Chance, we’ve talked about VR gaming before. With the headset, gloves, and ankle scanners so anyone can feel immersed in any gaming experience.” Arminus states to Chance, who replies, “Yeah, we’ve talked about it and it’s nice stuff too. But the minimal games, mild clunkiness, and SIZE portion…” He pauses his speech to WHAP his belly, causing it to dance even while he’s sitting. It sustains its jiggling as he continues. “…isn’t fully ready yet for the entire player base.” Arminus nods and builds off Chance. “So, what if I told you we could do that, but without VR?” Chance squints a bit trying to understand Arminus. “What do you… Arminus what game are you playing at?” Chance stipulates.
Arminus couldn’t be happier with Chance’s choice of words. “The game we will play is Monster Hunter Rise. A grinding cooperative campaign where hunters fight monsters to save their village and ecosystem.” Chance rolls his eyes at Arminus’s supposed joke. “Yeah, I’ve heard of it, but that doesn’t answer my question.” Chance restates, so Arminus reexplains himself. “We can play Monster Hunter Rise without any VR set and coop in game.”
Chance is somewhat intrigued sitting up higher in the recliner, but still has doubt in his mind. “So how does this work? Is this room a sensory space to detect our movement? Should we move furniture?” Chance spits out some ideas to see if he is getting close to Arminus’s reasoning.
Arminus side steps again with confidence of a door salesman and hand gestures to his console. “By using this.” Chance has the longest grimmest face of dissatisfaction. He hopped all the way over here for this joke. “Yea, I’m out.” Chance discouragingly speaks and with extra effort to exit the tight tiny recliner. SCHWUMP as Chance unclogs himself from the recliner. Arminus quickly stands between him and the door and holds his hands together. “Chance come on, don’t leave yet. Just trust me on this.” Arminus begs him, changing his announcer voice to his normal voice. Chance looks down at his begging demeanor, he swears Arminus’s eyes are about to water up too.
“Ok, ok. Just don’t cry on me.” Chance responds annoyed while walking backwards. Arminus didn’t say anything he just grabs Chance’s hand and brings him over to the console. While holding Chance’s hand, Arminus takes a knee to turn on his console, the TV, but doesn’t touch any controllers.
Not seeing a huge change, Chance throws an insult. “You proposing to me or something?” Arminus doesn’t look at him as he gives a sly response. “I ‘propose’ that you hang on.” Arminus harshly squeezes Chance’s wrist, places his fingers near the console’s disc drive, and his body begins to change. Chance notices Arminus becoming a translucent hologram. Chance begins to feel it too, static fuzz that leaves him weightless. He can hold his entire bouldering body up with his big toe alone.
“Woah, yo Arminus how di-” He stops questioning after observing Arminus. His translucent hologram is altering into a particle wave spiking and flatlining like a heartbeat monitor. Then Chance recognizes Arminus flowing into the console’s disk drive. Didn’t take Chance long to feel his entire body being stretched and broken into particles too. He didn’t know what to say, but he remembers what Arminus said and tightens his grip as he shapes into a wave line and joins Arminus as well.
The console begins to shake up and down as it renders the two gamers. A light green sparkle flows from the system, into the HDMI chord, and slithers all the way up the chord onto the TV, which also begins to illuminate too. As if put on rewind, the two particle wave gamers turn back into holograms, and then return to themselves with clothes and all.
Both are floating within a large green cube and touch foot onto the cube’s inner base platform. Slight buzzing reacts to their feet and shoes touching the platform. Chance has a lot of questions. “Bro, you a child of Neo or something?! How are you doing this?” Chance is now the eager one, as Arminus gives him a smirk as he rotates to face Chance. “Pretty cool right. Who needs VR when we can get the real experience.” A yellow portal doorway phases into existence behind Arminus with the title of Monster Hunter Rise above it.
Arminus points behind him with his thumb and speaks. “And this is our next stop, come on.” Chance grabs Arminus’s arm before they enter. “Dude hold on, are we actually in your gaming system?” The 8ft kangaroo isn’t budging until he gets his answer. Arminus complies and responds. “Yeah, more or less. But I must have the TV on as I do this. Otherwise, it’s pitch black if I only use the console. Now let’s get gaming.”
Arminus shakes off Chance’s grip and is now grabbing Chance’s wrist again. They both walk into the phasing doorway…ish. Chance’s hefty hips get him stuck a bit, but after some pulling and twisting, they both make it through. The game renders both of their bodies to match its data. “Whoa hey, what’s going on?” Chance demands feelings his body getting brushed by render scanners. “Oh yeah. The game is checking out our body’s before it…” A screen appears in front of each of them labeled ‘Character Customization’. “…well that.” Arminus finishes.
Chance is mildly disturbed by the particles swarming him but bares with it. “So, what? Am I gonna physically change or something?” He asks. “Yeah, this game has a set default height to 6ft tall and a built body. Since we’re gonna be fighting a lot. But if you wanna be a girl with no hair sounding like a male smoker in their teens, go for it.”
Chance can’t tell if Arminus is joking or not, but he retorts back. “I’m not gonna change anything, I wanna look like myself. Or close to it at least.” Arminus nods, “Got it, I’ll do the same. Also, don’t forget to choose a name.” Both adjust their character setting minimally and accept their creations. “This part might burn a bit.” Arminus warns. “Wait, what?” Chance appeals, but the particles around them begin to multiply and form an oval shell around each of them. Chance yelps from the pain, and Arminus just takes deep breaths until it’s over. The 10 seconds feel like 10 minutes for both as the shells around them dissipate and drop them both. Arminus lands on his feet, while Chance lands on his face.
“You good Chance?” Arminus asks lending him a hand to get up. Chance lifts his face up and takes Arminus gesture. “Thanks Duke… woah wait, Arminus?” Chance states as he sees Arminus with the name ‘Duke’ above his head. “Sure thing, Braxton. Where did ya find that name?” Arminus obliges while asking Chance a question. “I’ll tell ya later, but where are we now?” Chance reroutes the conversation. Both gamers have kept their facial features the same while their bodies are shaped into MMA fighters. They are currently wearing light undergarments over their torso and waists, and Chance checks if he still has his tail. “Please tell me I… (sighs) good. That’s a relief.” He gratifies feeling and shaking his roo tail.
They are now in a hut with an old fashion stone bath, layout bed mats, a fire kettle, and a chest near the entrance to the hut. Arminus speaks first, “Welcome, fellow hunter, to Kamura Village.” Chance views the scenery of the hut’s fine colors, he takes a guess at the period he is in. “So, is this like Medieval or something? Because it looks too pretty for that.” As Chance still observes the hut, Arminus slaps him on the back. “Yeah dude your close to it. This is the Azuchi-Momoyama period in Japan. Same time as the Medieval era in Europe. Here walk with me.”
Chance rubs his back and walks with Arminus over to a large chest near the hut’s exit. “This is our inventory chest. Weapons, armor, potions, alchemy, traps, and materials are shoved into this bottomless bad boy.” Arminus slaps his left hand on the lid, unhinges the lock with his other, and opens the lid with both hands. “Now, pick your weapon.” Arminus picks first and pulls out the Bow, an archers favorite companion.
Chance visualizes the fourteen different weapons. Melee/range, large/small, one part/2 parts, each weapon has its own unique feature. And with it, even more potential of different playstyles. “Uhhh… let’s see here…” Chance muddle through the weapons a bit. He can choose the Bow as well, but he didn’t find a particular liking to it. Which leaves him with 13 other choices. “If you want to, I can pick the easiest weapon for you. I have used every type of weapon in this game, and I’m a pro a-” “Oh yeah, this one.” Chance butts into Arminus’ speech and pulls out the Switch Axe, a massive morphing axe/sword.
“A Switch Axe, you sure? It has the damage, but no way do defend yourself.” Chance has a wide smile on his face. “This is the only thing that caught my eyes…” Chance stands tall with the body size Switch Axe over his right shoulder. The weapon morphs from axe form to sword form, extending itself longer behind Chance. “…And I got pretty good eyes too.” Chance finishes his reason, and Arminus stands to draw his bow next to Chance. “If you say so nooby. So, you ready to hunt?” Arminus challeges. Chance has never felt so much drive and connection with a weapon before. And it’s doubtful he would forget about a video game he is literally playing in too. With a toothy grin, and a firm grip on his handle he responds with the upmost determination and delight in his voice. “Let’s do this.”
