MHR: Braxton and Duke
Pt. 2: Annoying Arzuros
Arminus can digitize himself into his game systems and render his entire self into any game on his systems. He did so with Chance and morphed themselves into the video game Monster Hunter Rise and renamed themselves Duke and Braxton. Duke is an arrogant hunter vetern who is using the Bow. And Braxton is the newcomer adapting to the Switch Axe. And they are off to complete the storyline of Monster Hunter Rise.
Duke and Braxton are practicing through their weapon’s attributes. Duke’s Bow is a light yet rapid weapon, making him a somewhat glass canon fighter. However, he has more agility, a charging Dragon Piercer Arrow to cut through monsters, and Dodgebolt to simultaneously evade and counterattack any monster that attacks him.
Braxton’s choice is a 6ft Switch Axe, and it has two forms. An agile axe form and a larger heavy sword form, all in one weapon. He is the damage dealer, but at the cost of mobility and defense. In axe form he has Forward Overhead Slash. A long wind-up animation that deals heavy damage on set target. In the sword form, he has a Finishing Discharge. Successive strikes fill the sword’s damaging gauge. Once filled, the sword can explode an elemental discharge on the ground or attached to the monster.
The two hunters are currently training against a large makeshift monster dummy. “How does it feel Braxton?” Duke questions as he dodgebolts an attack from the dummy and follows up with Power Shots. “A little clunky…” Braxton answers while Forward Overhead Slashing into sword mode. “…but I think I got it.” He thrust the sword into the dummy, attaching himself to it. Then rev charges his sword until it explodes for a Finishing Discharge. Launching him backwards on his foot and knee with his sword mode turning back into axe mode.
“Nice one, but time to take it up a notch.” Duke compliments and hangs his bow on his back. “Yeah, the attacks are hitting…” Chance adds as he folds his weapon in half and sheathes it on his back too. “…but monsters won’t stays in place. What’s next for training?” Chance asks to see Duke walk away from the test dummy. “The real deal. Let’s go to the Gathering Hub.” Duke responds and waves Chance over. While in the game, Duke shows Braxton how to fast travel on his map settings.
Both hunters transport into the Gathering Hub, a social space for eating, organizing loadouts, crafting weapons/armor, and acquiring quests. “Sweet, this place is giving me MMO vibes.” Braxton admires aloud. “Well, ‘Gathinging Hub’ is in the name. Now time for the quest counter.” Duke requests a mission from Minoto the hub maiden. “I’ll let you pick Braxton. You wanna face a ferocious fire flamingo or a big burly bear?” Duke asks Braxton, who scratches his head a little bit between the two choices. “How about… the bear. Bigger target means easier target.” Duke nods at Braxton’s choice and acquires the quest from Minoto.
“Alright, let’s go!!” Braxton marches his way to the gates. “Hold up…” Duke puts a hand on Braxton’s shoulder. “…we can’t fight on an empty stomach.” Duke points to the Dango Dinner. “Eating dangos fills up our health, stamina, attack, and defense. Or else you’re vulnerable against any monster.” Duke walks Braxton to the table for a seat and raises two fingers to the palico chefs. “Two orders here please.” He requests and within a matter of seconds the dangos are served.
Braxton picks up and inspects the food. “So, these are a type of kabob?” Braxton guesses after examining one stick with three fried circles balls on it. “Sorta, they are mashed up rice that are fried afterwards…” Arminus explains while eating. “…mmm they’re good too. You can mix whatever you want into them, but that’s for later. Come on, dig in.” Braxton joins Arminus and eats his plate too. Both Hunter’s feel energy coursing through their bodies.
“I feel like cutting a tree in half with my bare hands.” Braxton hypes himself up after finishing his meal. “Every little bit counts when it comes to hunting. You can say it now.” Duke incites to Braxton, but he is confused by Duke’s comment. “Say what?” Braxton inquires. Duke points to the quest gate, then Braxton puts two-and-two together. “Oh yeah. Alright, Let’s Go!!!” And the two hunters leave the gate, and the game starts its loading screen to face the Big Burly Bear, Arzuros.
The map is called the Shining Ruins, a temperate grassland of rocky hills, trees, and rivers. Small villages boomed here in the past, but no longer. Homes with torn walls and roofs, gates were split or dismantled, and the stone roads and bridges crumbled to debris or dust. Natural disasters had no claim to the damages created by monsters. Now they roam and live in what little structures hold up. As hunters do what they can to drive the beasts out and rebuild the ghost towns.
Duke and Braxton arrive at Campsite 1, with Braxton surveying the area. “Hey, wait. Don’t we get a dog and cat with us?” He asks Duke. “Palamute and Palico, and yes. But I guess we forgot to request them to come with us. Sorta weird, but I’m not too worried. I know I can kill it.” Braxton corrects Duke. “We… We can kill it.” Duke chuckles a bit. “Yea, yea, sure. Now let’s find this thing.” Leaving Braxton, a little mocked, he follows Duke sliding down a hill to a high edge.
They both jump off a cliff and land in a shallow river, unfazed from the fall. “Huh, I was expecting a little pain from that.” Braxton comments. “Plus side of Monster Hunter Rise, no fall damage. The expression ‘if your friend jumps off a cliff would you join them’ doesn’t apply here.” Duke confirms to Braxton. “Actually, it would, since I jumped off with you and didn’t take damage.” Braxton corrects him but receives a low brow from Duke.
“Anyways… where do we go from here?” Braston redirects the conversation. Duke pulls up his game settings and a hologram map appears. “Woah, wait can I do that?” Braxton asks. “You should, extend your left arm out and flick your hand up.” Duke instructs Braxton. He struggles one time, or six, but manages to get it open.
“Ok, this map is a big circle with three horizontal midway paths, we are here at the bottom in the Southern Area. I’ll circle left and you’ll circle right.” Duke commands Braxton. “We don’t have headsets to communicate. So, if we don’t meet up top that means one of us found Arzuros. And the other hunter zig zags through the midways until they find the other hunter and Arzuros. Got it?” Duke stares at Braxton for an answer. “Got it. Happy hunting Duke.” “You too.”
Both separate to follow the path Duke brought up, though he purposely chose to go left for a reason. “Arzuros is in the lower midway path, he usually goes there to eat honey. Sorry Braxton, but I’m gonna clear this up quickly so we don’t take too long.” Duke concurs to himself with ego. After completing the game three times through, his cockiness is annoying.
He travels left-to-right on the lower horizontal pathway and runs into a group of small Izuchi’s raptors. They screech at him as he walks to them unfazed. “You’re in the way.” He doesn’t give a warning; he draws his bow and fires three arrows at the three raptors. Three blunt arrows striking each head, toppling them to the ground and squirming from the pain. Duke doesn’t even bother watching them, as he walks past their cries.
RRAAAHHH Duke immediately hides in a bush. Not for fear, but for the bonus damage if he attacks while stealth. He peeks up from the bush and sees Arzuros. Duke can only see the big bear’s boorish backside bounce from side to side as it walks away from Duke towards a honey hive. “That’s it, go towards your snack.” Duke reiterates and walks behind the brute. While standing 6ft, Arminus can reach his elbows to the bear’s butt. But for width, the Arzuros’s ass could cover him from head to knees. “Ugh, even three feet behind em’ this thing reeks.” Duke ruffles his nose, but still tails the beast.
Arzuros makes its way to the honey unbeknownst of Duke tracking him closely behind its, behind. “Ok, lvl 3 Charging Dragon Piercer should knock it to the ground easy.” Duke grabs his bow, slings an arrow from his quiver, and readies the bow. A red aura emits lightly around him in levels. “Lvl 1” Duke takes aim as he draws his bow. “Lvl 2” He pulls the string back more, increasing the charging damage as the aura glows a dark red color. “Lvl 3” He is fully charged. “Eat this you oblivious blockhe-uggffff.”**
-Braxton is halfway to the top of his circle path but runs into spirabirds that boost his health, armor, damage, and stamina. “Oh, so each color does its own thing. Might as well grab some more if I see em’.”-
**Duke falls forward on his stomach and loses all his concentration and charging damage because a softball sized spitball nailed him in the back. Apparently the ‘dumb Izuchi raptors’ decided to take a shot at him while he stood still and unaware of them. Duke rotates to his back and spites the annoying raptors. “You devious little-” BWUMPF.
The Arzuros takes a seat right on Duke, covering him from head to waist. The potbelly burly booty bear had him trapped right under its crack, and it didn’t even know of Duke’s presence because of the honey hive it took from the low hanging tree. The bear leans into its hands holding the natural golden liquid and begins its feast. Meanwhile Duke is feeling the furry force of the grizzly’s glutes on his chest.**
-Braxton reaches the top of the map and remembers what Duke said. “I guess Duke found the Arzuros. I just hope he’s not done with it when I arrive.” He explains in an annoying sigh. He knows Duke wouldn’t wait for him if he spots Arzuros first. Which Braxton is right about.-
**Duke’s bow is to the right of the hungry monster, but he can only move his legs with limited body movement. He swings his legs side to side to shimmy himself out, with no progress. Then duke tries to lift himself up, which was also an utter failure. He feels the crusty coarse hair poke his skin and can’t escape the atrocious aura of Arzuros ass either. He can barely shake himself under the bulging beast if he was lucky. And somehow the Arzuros still didn’t notice him as it engorges itself with honey. The thought of being trapped under this bonehead bear by idiotic Izuchis has Duke furious. He frantically curls his knees back and kicks the bear’s butt, only causing the blubber to bounce.**
-Braxton makes his way through the first horizontal path and discovers a Blast Toad. An orange toad that when faced with a monster, will release volatile air fumes from its back. When those fumes mix with the air, they combust. “Huh, this is cool.”-
**While eating halfway through its honey hive, the Arzuros stops feasting as he feels something rubbing its bottom the wrong way. It didn’t bother to look back as it begins waddling its wagon backwards a couple inches. SQUIMCH SQUAMCH SQUIMCH SQUAMCH as it indirectly smothers Duke and begins to cover his legs and knees. Once finding itself in a better position, and not feeling the annoyance on its butt, the Arzuros continues to chow down on his honey.
Duke’s health was cut in half from the bears previous impact, but its seat shuffling brought his health down even further. If he attempts to kick or disturb the beast he might feint, and on a lvl 1 monster too. That would be embarrassing defeat upon himself.**
-Braxton clears the second trail and runs into an extra wirebug. “Well, this will help, but where is Duke? And the Arzuros?” Continuing his search, he notices Duke’s health bar in his upper left of his vision. It was low. “What the… Crap. Duke!” Braxton used a wirebug to fling himself up the mountain wall. He begins parkour running up the rock and uses another wirebug to reach over a cliff edge. “Where are you Duke? Where are you?” Braxton visors his hand over his eyes to try and find Duke on top of the mountain…-
**The Arzuros completely finishes its honey, still unsuspectingly sitting and squashing Duke beneath itself. The honeycomb may be done, but its claws had some remaining honey dripping from it. The beefy bear bounces slightly realizing it can enjoy the honey’s taste even more, while it also GRUMPF GRUMPF GRUMPF GRUMPF squishes Duke further into the ground. Duke didn’t know what to do, he was certain he was stuck under the Arzuros’s ass for a solid 15 minutes. And he was going to feint from its fat ferocious fanny. A truly terrible way to go.
“Duke! Duke come on!” Braxton is running on his third horizontal path trying to locate Duke and the Arzuros. “Damnit where could he be. For all I know he could have taken out the… Arzuros!” He freezes a couple yards away from the Fanged Beast. “Guess I’ll be the one who strik- what the?” Running up behind the perpetually oblivious bear, Braxton spots a pair of legs sticking out from under its rear. “Damn, that’s gotta hurt (sniff) (sniff) Aww, that and its odor have gotta be awful.” Braxton covers his nose from the natural stench of the bear. He didn’t know how Duke is surviving, but he doesn’t have long unless Braxton thinks of something. He observes the mountain a foot in front of the bear, he grabs his Blast Toad, and counts his wire bugs. “Well, might as well try.”
Braxton wirebugs above the bear and climbs the mountain. He reaches a low cliff edge, but its high enough where the bear doesn’t see him. “Ok…” Braxton speaks as he gets out his switch axe in axe-mode. “…here it goes.” He rolls forward to do a Forward Overhead Slash, but rolls off the cliff. Instead, he is now doing an Arial Forward Overhead Slash. Aiming straight for the blockhead bear. WWHHAAMMM Braxton successfully strikes the bear’s noggin, causing it to topple to the side and fall over. “Oh Sick! It worked.” Braxton victors to himself but redirects his attention to Duke pressed some inches into the ground from a grizzly’s gross globes.
“You good Duke?” Braxton asks while pulling Duke up. He grabs Duke’s arms and yanks them out first along with the rest of Duke. “Man, any longer and you could have been a sticker.” Braxton adds, Duke stretches his body out of any crinks and cracks and grabs his bow. “I got double teamed, but I’m glad you came by.” Duke thanks Braxton. “By what?” Braxton asks. “Doesn’t matter, it’s is coming.” Duke interjects, still embarrassed about his situation.
Gettig back to its feet, the Arzuros stands on his hind legs to angerly roar from its head contusion. “Duke dodge!” Braxton yells as he plants a Blast Toad, and Duke responds quickly by jumping away. The bear blinded with ire charged at the hunters headfirst. But instead runs into a small amphibian bomb, knocking itself out and falling over again.
“Nice Braxton, now let em’ have it.” Duke fires his Charging Shots and Power Shots at the bears face, while Braxton maneuvered his was to the Arzuros’s back and starts his Forward Slashing Series on it in sword mode. Both hunters rack up the damage onto the bear, but it gets back up again. “Braxton, distract it.” “Uh, ok.” Duke holsters his bow and prepares to set a trap to Braxton’s right, who keeps Arzuros occupied.
Braxton notices his sword mode is heating up and is illuminating an orange tint to the blade. The Arzuros does a charging bear hug, but Braxton dodges low and left from it in time. “Eat this!” In sword-mode, Braxton has his gauge charged. He pierces the Arzuors’s side and starts flickering his weapon’s ignition trigger in his hilt. The sword starts crackling small fireworks, growing each spark brighter and with the CRACKLING CRAACCKKLINNGG CCRRAAACCKKLLLIINNNGGG becoming louder, until KA-BOOOOMMM Braxton blasts the beast back with his Finishing Discharge.
The Arzuros repels backwards from the blast right into Duke’s trap. Duke then plants two tranquilizer bombs to sleep the Arzuros. Both of their vision screens lights up:
CAPTURE QUEST COMPLETE.
“Good thinking on the trap Duke.” “Yea, and nice dodge n’ counter on your end. That bear didn’t see it coming.” Both hunters complement each other, but Braxton interrogates Duke. “So, how did you end up under the Arzuros?” Duke responded confidently. “I was doubled teamed by another monster, three monsters actually. I couldn’t escape them, and they knocked me under Arzuros.”
Braxton continues, “You fought three other monsters, including Arzuros?...” Duke is holding his brave frame strong, hoping Braxton doesn’t see through his, white lie. Braxton speaks, “…You may have done this before, but can we stick together for the next hunt? This one could have gone a lot worse.” “Sure, it’s more fun with others anyways.” Duke replies to Braxton and holsters his bow.
“Come on, I’ll pay for the round of Dangos again for you helping me.” Duke offers, which Braxton revels, “Helping you? You mean ‘saving’ you.” “Don’t push it.” Braxton sheathes his Switch Axe and both hunters make their way back to camp. Though Braxton didn’t stand too close to Duke, mostly due to him smelling like an Arzuros’s literal ass. First thing Duke is doing is going to is bathe for an hour before they hunt again. Or maybe a whole day.
