Chapter 6
When the light turned green to signal the start of the race, Chase, just for the fun of it, barked, “Ruff! Boost fire!” He’d actually have to press a button in his hovercar in order to actually use a Super Jet, but he wouldn’t get a Super Jet until he crossed the finish line, provided he was within the limits of each lap. However, he wasn’t having any issues getting the lead back after Codi took it away from him, because the girl was struggling to get used to her hovercar, and it didn’t help that they had the AI-opponent cars causing trouble for them as well. “AUGH! I wish I had my Relocator!” she sneered to herself. “Is this normal?”
Since Bradley could talk to her and Harold as part of keeping everything fair and square, he said, “Yes, it is, but you’ll notice they’re not just doing it to you and the pups. They’re doing it to one another as well.” Indeed, the cars were bumping each other around, trying to knock one another out of the race, and one AI-controller car landed out of bounds, having mistimed the jump in Mute City I. That was an instant disqualification, and the car exploded as a result. Other cars were flashing, indicating that one more hit meant they were going to explode. Harold managed to bump into one such car, and he lost a good chunk of power as a result. However, he did use the pit stop on his next time around.
“Why did I even suggest this?” he lamented. “I knew I should’ve just teleported Adventure Bay back to Foggy Bottom and made it Haroldville!”
Chase made sure to stay focused and not get cocky, but once he got the lead back from Codi, he never lost it. He wasn’t able to finish, however, without a few trips to the pit stop, considering he did the wall a few times. Nathan assured him, “Don’t worry about it, Chase. In my experiences playing the original video game we’re recreating here, I never was able to finish a race without bumping the wall myself.”
“I can understand that,” said Chase as he crossed the finish line in first place, and scoring 15 points for the Mighty Pups. “I figured they were going to get harder as we go along. Doing this first one, though, turned out to be a cake walk!”
“I don’t know why I was even worried,” Amy smiled as the crowds broke into thunderous applause.
As for the other two, Harold managed to score 5 points for third place in the end, but Codi did not score, as she was in eighth place at the end of the fourth lap, and since one had to be fifth or better to continue, that was a disqualification. She was angry, of course, but it was her own fault, because she did not take the race very seriously as the others did.
Upon exiting his hovercar, Chase cheered, “Super speed beats the greed!” (“Greed” was referencing Harold’s and Codi’s greedy desires to control Adventure Bay for themselves.”)
Note that as each race progressed, the audience could audibly hear the song for each game’s track playing in the background. When the race was over, it changed to the song that played afterwards and eventually faded out. “I wonder if our band could play some of these tunes?” Marshall thought aloud, since the PAW Patrol had their own band. “It would be fun music to play.”
“I was thinking the same thing,” Vector replied, hearing the remark. “The fact you guys have a band of your own is amazing; it’s giving us plenty of competition.” (Sonic and his friends also formed their own band, and Vector was its keyboardist, just as Marshall played keyboards for the PAW Patrol.)
Next, it was Zuma’s turn to race Big Blue. “Let’s dive in!” he cheered as he entered his hovercar to race.
“Big Blue,” Nathan explained to the audience, “is a planet in this universe that is 99% covered by water. That’s not an exaggeration; I’m talking literally. Its circuits are built over and/or through its vast ocean. In most F-Zero games, Big Blue has the appearance of a wide, open sea, with numerous rocks protruding out of the water, and very few buildings above its oceans.”
“The planet was strictly protected by the nature conservation group over a long time,” Bradley added, “but it was rumored that a new energy source laid down at the bottom of the seabed; investigation started right away, although no discoveries have yet been found.”
“Is the planet still mostly water?” Skye asked.
“It is. It continues to survive thanks to its nature conservation efforts, and its cooperative people.”
The race began, and Zuma was almost immediately getting bumped by his opponents. “Whoa, dude!” he exclaimed. “A little bit bumpy!” He struggled on the first lap, but he soon found his stride and managed to make a comeback, wisely using the energy pit stop and his Super Jets, and he made a spectacular comeback, just barely taking first place away from Harold at the last second. “No fair!” Harold complained. “I had the lead the whole time!”
“Sorry, but that’s the way it is,” Bradley spoke over the intercom. “It’s like they say in other motorsports: rubbing’s racing. Or something like that.”
This race was a sweep for the main racers, meaning Zuma won, Harold got second, and Codi got third, scoring 15, 10, and 5 points, respectively. This put the Mighty Pups at 30 points total, Harold at 15, and Codi at 5.
Upon exiting his hovercar, Zuma cheered, “Zuma’s riding the wave to make the save!”
Codi’s parents were in the audience, and Hailey decided to interview them, asking them why they disowned her and wrote her out of the wills. “We did not raise that girl to be an evil genius,” her dad said. “Plus, we felt being that smart wasn’t a good quality for a girl. All we wanted was a normal girl. Was that so much to ask?”
“Sounds like something out of a book I read,” Carlos thought to himself.
“Where did we go wrong?” her mother lamented. “Where did we go wrong? The damage is already done.”
“You are stuck without her,” Ryder commented afterwards, “because she was put in jail for the rest of her life, and now she’s got more charges on her record since it is against the law to break out of jail. But I don’t understand is why you were so quick to disown her. You couldn’t give her a second chance?”
“Nothing worked, no matter what we tried,” the dad replied. “She’s rotten to the core. In any case, we came here to help the police take her back into prison, but will that violate anything here?”
“Yes. The contract everybody signed says the competition has to be done in full. If you were to take her out of it and make her forfeit, making the whole thing null and void, then we have to pay the penalty as well. Then Adventure Bay would still cease to exist.” (The contract had indeed stated that the winner got to keep Adventure Bay, and a violation of it meant it would be a ghost town, forcing everybody to move out. So the authorities and judges agreed to let the competition go to its end, although they also would make notes that Harold and Codi, by forcing Mayor Goodway to do this, were in violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As a result, both would be put on trial afterwards, and both would be sentenced to appropriate amounts of years in prison.)
Next, it was time for Rubble to race Sand Ocean. “Mighty Rubble on the double!” he announced as he entered his hovercar.
“Sand Ocean,” Nathan and Bradley explained to the audience, “is a desolate planet whose entire surface is covered in sand dunes. This planet’s extremely arid frontier planet was thought to have been completely void of human life for many years. However, a fearless adventurer discovered that there was actually a 30,000-year-old civilization deep under the dunes in addition to a monstrous alien life form. It subsequently became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the galaxy.”
The race began, and Rubble commented, “This is kind of creepy, though. Why is there a giant snail there?” In the background, everyone could see a structure that resembles a giant snail.
“I don’t know why that is, but don’t let it distract you, Rubble,” Nathan advised over the intercom.
“Okay. Oh, no; look out!” Rubble’s last remark was directed towards the fact he had to watch out for a flashing hovercar, which was about to explode. “Whew; that was a close one!” He then crossed the finish line and went to the pit area. “Sorry; I couldn’t get any closer without blowing up myself!”
“That’s okay; you did exactly as you should have done. I should point out,” Nathan continued, “that if you are unfortunate enough to have the car blow up on you, you’re not actually going to die. You’ll just disappear and reappear back here with me.”
Bradley made sure to tell Harold and Codi the same thing, and indeed, the race got to be a bit too much for Codi. It was almost as if karma was punishing her for her original efforts to make Adventure Bay her own town, Codi Cove, because she tried to take the turns of the course too fast, and she kept hitting the walls. In the end, her car blew up, but soon, she found herself in the control room next to Bradley. “Huh? What happened?” she exclaimed. “I’m not dead! Oh, wait a minute.” Then she realized what Bradley had said was true.
“Your hovercar will be good as new for the next race,” the dog assured her. “However, do you now see what you got yourself into?”
“I do,” she replied. She walked out of the control room and back to her home base (since each team had a home base) to gather her thoughts.
Rubble and Harold, meanwhile, kept going back and forth, but just as Zuma had done before, Rubble was smart to use his Super Jets when he did, whereas Harold had used his at the start of the final lap to try to get ahead, which did give him a big lead at that point. As a result, Rubble won the race, making it 45 points for the Mighty Pups. Harold did take second place again, so he was at 25 points, and Codi was still at just 5.
“Even if I don’t pull this off, at least I know one thing,” Harold said to himself. “I’m better than she is. She doesn’t get it.”
“How do you feel now, Mayor?” Ryder asked Goodway.
“Starting to feel better about the whole thing, but we still have a long way to go,” said Goodway. “Besides, I don’t know if Harold or Codi is planning to cheat or not.”
“They won’t be cheating. We’re holding them to a very high standard,” said Bradley. “If they do something rash, or if an outside interference occurs, we’ll know about it.”
“That’s a relief.” The mayor then took some corn from her purse and fed it to Chickaletta. All the while, everybody else was getting really excited for the Mighty Pups. They knew it wasn’t in the big, but so far, so good, as the pups had a perfect score so far. Could they keep it up? Or would Harold or Codi figure it out and get their revenge?
