Chapter 8
So far, Chase conquered Mute City I, Zuma did likewise with Big Blue, and Rubble did so with Sand Ocean. Skye didn’t do so well with Death Wind I, but because there was a Death Wind II, she knew what to expect for next time. Ella, however, made it 4 out of 5 when she conquered Silence.
Everybody took a break for a bit, and then the next morning, they returned to the arena for the next set of races, the Queen League. The races were Mute City II, Port Town I, Red Canyon I, White Land I, and White Land II, which meant Everest was going to do two races back-to-back after Chase led off again, followed by the first time that Tracker and Rocky would race. All the pups got themselves hyped up for the big races after stretching and exercising so that they would decrease the risk of injury. Codi and Harold, on the other hand, just held a grudge against the dogs for kicking their butts on the Knight League, not willing to have learned a hard lesson about biting off more than one could chew.
Since each league began with a track on Mute City, Nathan and Bradley didn’t have to explain to the audience what was expected. Instead, they cut to the chase (pun not intended), and the police dog once again shouted, “Mighty Chase is ready to race!” As he boarded his hovercar, the hosts reminded everybody of the scores so far:
PAW Patrol: 65
Harold Humdinger: 30
Codi Gizmody: 20
“What the racers score here will be added to these scores,” Bradley commented, “and we’ll do the same with the King League. However, we don’t the grand totals until the end, so reset the scores to zero.” Nathan pressed a button, and the scoreboards now showed a zero (0) for each team. The audience present heard a traditional game show ding when he did this.
Then the race began. This time, Harold and Codi put up a much better fight against Chase and the other AI opponents, although Codi wanted to do nothing but complain, it seemed. Why? Well, the AI-controlled version of the main character from the game, Captain Falcon, had made the promise he’d especially keep an eye on Codi, and because she tried to trip up Chase with her dirty tactics, he felt it was his duty to give her a taste of her own medicine. There was no way to stop the race because once it started, it didn’t stop until all the racers had finished and/or were eliminated from an exploding car. (In the “F-Zero” storyline, the sport was outlawed and suspended for seven years after a horrible race known as the “Horrific Grand Finale,” which burnt a whopping 14 drivers to death, with only one person surviving the whole thing. However, the Mighty Pups and villains were playing by the rules of the sport that were in place before the Horrific Grand Finale; the rules and regulations were revised after that tragedy.) As a result, Codi got really ticked off, and began focusing on keeping ahead of the Blue Falcon, pushing it as necessary, until it exploded.
“Good riddance!” she huffed.
“Was that supposed to happen?” Knuckles asked Nathan. “I realize this is just AI at work, but your rendition of Captain Falcon really wants to go after the girl.”
“Brad, is that a glitch?” Nathan asked his co-host and producer.
“I believe so,” said Bradley. “I let my brothers know about the problem, and they’re working on it as we speak. Now that Captain Falcon is out of the race, they can get to that.”
The result was another sweep, with Codi overtaking Harold at the last second, but not Chase. The Mighty Pups had their first 15 points of the Queen League, while Codi had 10, and Harold had 5.
Then it was Tracker’s turn to race, and his track/arena of choice was Port Town. “Well, ladies and gentlemen, this is it!” Bradley began. “This is Port Town, famously known as an intergalactic trades center and is the home of the bounty hunter and F-Zero racer himself, Captain Falcon! Port Town’s architecture is marked by towering skyscrapers and pyramid-shaped office buildings, and the town is bordered by mountains.”
“The 26th Century,” Nathan added, “in the context of our story here we are recreating with the virtual reality, is dominated by intense competition between planets for profitable interstellar trade. Due to this competition, other planets have invested huge fortunes in the creation of massive space harbors to increase traffic; Earth’s answer to this resulted in the creation of the Port Town space harbor. The Port Town space harbor has been built with the newest technological and aesthetic refinements in mind. This multi-layered structure is centered around a massive structure towering three miles above the ground and is the largest space harbor in the universe.”
“And it’s your turn, Tracker!” Bradley concluded.
“I’ll race to the rescue!” Tracker announced, boarding his hovercar. “¡Correré al rescate!”
As the race began, Sonic and his team got to know some of the other pups they hadn’t met yet, and it threw Tails off to discover one of the pups was named Al. “I think the Al that we met the last time we came to that town would have been that Al,” he said, motioning to Farmer Al.
“It’s a great name,” Farmer Al chimed in.
“It sure is,” said Al (the pup), “and I love what I do as a truck driver, helping out folks on the open road, and making the important deliveries. I even help Ryder look after the truck stop as needed.”
“Your team has a truck stop?” Charmy asked Ryder.
“Yes, we do,” said Ryder. “It mainly starts with our Lookout, but we have the truck stop, too. We have our PAW Patroller, the Air Patroller, a Sea Patroller, all sorts of things.”
“What doesn’t he have?” Charmy wondered to himself.
“How, when, and where does he find time to build all those things?” Vector wondered.
“How does he get the money to pay for it?” Espio thought to himself.
“How do the other two kids get the money to pay for their stuff?” Silver thought to himself. “Assuming they don’t steal everything, of course. I don’t know the girl; just the boy, based on the things I have read.”
Meanwhile, Amy and the girls talked to Sweetie. “So why did you want to be queen so bad?” Cream asked.
“Why not?” Sweetie replied, hiding what she wanted to hide. “If a human can do it, so can a pup.”
Tracker, meanwhile, struggled on the course. “Oy-oy-oy!” he winced. “This is harder than I thought. I cannot let my team down. Yikes!” (It didn’t help his cause that the AI opponents were going after him, but it didn’t help Harold’s or Codi’s causes either, because they were going after them. It was mind-boggling to see Harold still have the lead the entire time, given the circumstances.)
“Tracker,” Nathan called over the intercom. “Just calm down!”
“I’m trying, but I think I overshot this! Whoa!”
It was a hard-fought battle, and Harold’s dominance led him to grow quite arrogant over it. Still, Tracker fought the hard fight, and unexpectedly got a boost from one of the AI opponents, which shot him back into third place at the last second. Codi ended up in second place, and again, it was a photo finish.
“Of course I’d win that race, because I’m a genius!” Harold began to gloat.
“If you think you’re so good, just wait until I kick your butt at the next track!” Codi sneered. “Adventure Bay is MINE!”
“No, it’s mine! It shall soon be renamed Haroldville!”
“Haroldville? What a stupid name!”
The two kids argued with one another as Bradley’s brothers stepped in to break them up and get them back to their hovercars. “If you two keep having these heated discussions, we’re going to start subtracting points from your score,” they warned. “Yes; it’s true that there are those clauses in the contract that was signed, but we still show no tolerance for such behavior. Plus, if you cheat, you’re disqualified; you know this.”
“Thank you; I was about to tell him the same thing,” came a voice from behind.
“Wait, what?” Harold exclaimed in shock. “Grandma? Why are you here?”
“To watch you race,” she said. “But you shouldn’t have done this to the pups.”
“Who are you?” Sonic asked in confusion.
“I’m Helga Humdinger,” the woman said, introducing herself. “I don’t cheat, steal, or do bad things, unlike my offspring. So you had Mayor Humdinger, who is now in prison forever, and so he should be; he was my son, and yet, because he disobeyed me so many times, he got what was coming to him. To tell you the truth, I just didn’t know what to do with him anymore. What I am doing here is to see how Harold finishes, and to ensure he does this without cheating. Not forgetting the fact that there was no reason for him and that girl to propose this Grand Prix in the first place. I think this whole thing has been a waste of time. Of course, there’s nothing I can do about it now, because of that contract.”
“Well, I’ll let you in a little secret here,” Bradley told her softly. “They have all sworn to secrecy, and so should you, but the fact of the matter is, your grandson didn’t write that contract. It was a joint idea of his and Codi’s to do this Championship Series so that whoever wins gets to keep the town of Adventure Bay, but the contract itself was entirely Codi’s doing. However, all contracts that are signed and agreed to first have to be approved before we can use our virtual reality arena for events like this. And we didn’t approve the contract she wrote, because she was trying to make it so that she’d have a victory in the bag. She clearly didn’t read the rules of the original competition.”
“Well, your secret is safe with me,” said Helga. “I know how dangerous Gizmody can be; I continue to see news reports about her all the time. I thought she went to the moon, though.”
“Originally, she did,” Ryder chimed in, “but she made it back to Earth. However, she was arrested and sentenced; I forgot how long the term was. Now it’s even longer, because she broke out of jail, and it is illegal to break out of jail.”
“Why didn’t your town ever have a jail?” Helga paused to clear her throat.
“There was no need for one, I guess,” Mayor Goodway replied. “Nothing Mayor Humdinger did was worth of jail time. At least, I don’t think it was. We just made him do community service project after community service project. In the end, he was given prison time for all his crimes, so it did all add up in the end. Wait. Were you there?”
“No; I was not at the trial when my son got 540 years in prison. It didn’t surprise me, though.”
“I see.”
“BA-BUCK, BA-GERK!” Chickaletta clucked.
“Oh, yes, Chickaletta. You can have a snack.” The mayor set her purse chicken down and set some corn on the cob down so the chicken could eat it. “She loves corn, you realize.”
“I see that.”
The scores now were 20 for the Mighty Pups, 20 for Codi, and 20 for Harold. “Oh, it is a three-way tie!” Nathan commented. “Somebody is going to come out ahead on the next race! Who is it going to be? Stay tuned!”
