It's a calm, seemingly peaceful night in the valley below, the silence disturbed only by the musical drone of crickets and the occasional rustle of leaves on tree and brush alike as the cool wind breezes by. It's quite clear out tonight too, no clouds in the sky to obscure the brightness of the moon and the stars, the silvery light spilling down into the forest from above providing the only illumination for miles around aside from the occasional flicker of fireflies that gathered and flitted about in small clusters between the darkened shadows of tree trunks. Every so often the hurried pattering of small animal feet could be heard as the woodlands' nocturnal denizens stirred on the forest floor, occasionally punctuated by the distant sounds of hooting owls and croaking frogs calling out to their kin. It was, by all means, a tranquil night just like any other, as per usual in a woodland like this. And yet... for a certain individual, perched there upon one of the low rock outcrops near the base of the great mountains surrounding the area, that was most definitely not the case.
Sir Gault Tremont hunched down just a touch lower in his already crouched position, keeping himself relatively hidden among the stones and shade as to maintain the element of surprise when it would come most in handy. His vigilant gaze, well accustomed to being able to see incredibly well even in complete darkness and attuned to picking up on what most could easily overlook without paying especially close attention, carefully combs over every bit of visible detail he can make out from his elevated perch. The wolf's ears are perked and on high alert, swiveling and twitching every so often as they listened out attentively for a sign of anything that could be taken as being out of the ordinary. His fingers reflexively clench a little tighter around the haft of Tempest's Edge as it rests in its usual place upon his shoulder, feeling the minute yet noticeable hum of the glaive's innate magic under his touch, likely having sensed that a fight would soon be at hand.
It had started when he had received a summons to a small, relatively remote town out here on the other side of the nearby mountains, desperately seeking aid to get to the bottom of the cause behind a string of disappearances that had occurred over the span of the past few weeks. Apparently something huge and predatory had settled in and established residence somewhere about in the area, and had taken to raiding the nearby village on a near constant nightly basis upon finding it to be what it seemed to consider an easy source of food. Curfews had been put in place to try to keep the townsfolk safe as the incidents notably seemed to occur sometime during the late hours of the night, though apparently it had only caused whatever beast or creature that was behind the kidnappings to become increasingly frustrated and emboldened in its efforts. When the Night Hunter had initially arrived in town and began questioning the locals for what information they could offer on the case, the first thing they'd shown to him had been the torn open, splintered, gutted remains of a house near the outskirts of the village where a family of three had lived up until the night before.
The people in the neighboring homes spoke of hearing a loud crash sometime past midnight, followed by the horrific sounds of screams and the telltale thumping of heavy, fast-moving feet as the unfortunate victims were unceremoniously ripped from within their ruined house and stolen away to be eaten. Being far out of the jurisdiction of any nearby cities or kingdoms meant the townsfolk couldn't necessarily reach out for help from authorities, and they barely had much as it stood to serve as guards or a local militia of some kind to combat against it... Yet they refused to let this continue on for any longer, not wanting to have to spend their nights living in constant fear that they themselves or their families could end up being targeted next by this strange yet dangerous predator that lurked about. That was where hunters like Sir Tremont came in, and knowing that it would give the locals some peace of mind to ensure that this mysterious threat wouldn't ever come back to terrorize them again was all he needed to fully devote himself to the task at hand.
Tracking the creature back to this valley it had recently taken to calling its home hadn't been a particularly difficult task. It clearly had little to no sense of tact or subtlety if the trail of wanton destruction throughout parts of the town and the obvious tracks of enormous footprints, disturbed earth, trampled grass, and haphazardly broken branches leading into the woods beyond were of any sign. Knowing that it seemed to prefer coming out to hunt during the late hours, Gault made sure to set out close to sunset, following along closely with the traces of its most recent activity until it lead him down the other side of the mountains to this place. Even now, as he took in every bit of the area around him, he made sure to note anything that seemed out of place or looked similar to the tracks he'd been following before... The thick tree coverage on the ground below here made it much more difficult to detect any immediate signs that it had come through here, but he had seen noticeable furrows along the cliffsides leading to and from the valley when he'd climbed down them himself beforehand. Long, trailing gashes laying side-by-side in sets of four carved out from the stone by what were most assuredly large, tough claws, some clearly fresher than others... Based on the shape of the footprints he'd found earlier and the placement of the claw marks, the creature didn't seem like any being he could name and identify off the top of his head. It certainly wasn't a lycanthrope of any kind, nor a troll, giant, or ghoul. It could very well be a beast that he hadn't ever encountered, much less fought against before up until tonight, but, well... there was hardly any bad opportunity to be able to learn something new as far as Sir Tremont was concerned.
The first sign that alerted him to its coming was the cacophonous cawing of crows in the distance, their dark shapes silhouetted against the night sky as flocks of them seemed to rapidly take flight from among the trees all at once. It was an omen that he had learned about quickly during his earlier ventures and always made sure to especially look out for during his hunts... if crows were cawing at night, then that was a surefire indication that something dangerous or evil was on the approach. The second sign, which followed only moments later after, was the sudden dead silence that fell over the entirety of the forest in a matter of an instant. No more crickets chirping, no hoots or croaks from the owls or the frogs, even the clusters of fireflies had seemingly dispersed and disappeared entirely as if they had also sensed the impending threat. Everything just stood completely and utterly still, gravely quiet, not even daring to disturb the tension that had seized the atmosphere around them. Gault's ears pricked to attention upon sensing something else in the air that cut through the hush of the darkness, the sustained noise of massive, lumbering footsteps that shook the trees and made even the ground shudder with every hammering 'thump' that struck the soil. It was really far off right now, making its way towards his general direction from the north side of the valley. But already it was starting to close what distance still remained between them, and very quickly.
The creature, even without having actually seen what it exactly was, he could sense was clearly very strong yet also quite fleet of foot judging from how rapidly it was moving as it was incoming closer and closer to his position. Though if there was any sense of trepidation that the Night Hunter felt about facing this new, as of yet unknown threat, not once did it show on his face or in his body language. Narrowing his eyes, the warrior's muscles grow tense as he lowers himself down further, bracing against the stone beneath his feet as he brings Tempest's Edge into attack-ready position, prepared to leap in and lunge blade-first at the exact moment that the beast would finally make its presence fully known. The lightning magic within the glaive seemed to thrum in tandem with the growing sense of anticipation and excitement that rushed through Gault's veins in the moment... the thrill of the hunt, the brimming eagerness at the prospect of facing against and potentially even overcoming a new challenge.
Two apex predators would clash against each other tonight, and at the end of it all there might only be one still left alive... And needless to say, Gault had every intention of making sure that he would complete his task regardless of what may end up happening, and ensuring that he would fulfill the promise he had taken his vow to when he had chosen to devote his life to pursuing this path. As a hero, as a warrior, and more importantly, as a protector.
Hey hey everyone!! I'm still very much alive and well here! Again, apologies for the somewhat drastic drop in activity over the past several months, honestly it's just been a lot of other things going on in life, work, friends, out of town trips, and such. I just haven't had as much time and energy as I used to for doing as much with writing, and of course there is still quite a big backlog of stories and artworks that I need to get around to working on so I can post up and share them with everyone who enjoys the stuff I do. This one is perhaps the most that I've written for something like this in quite a long while, but I do hope that you all will like it all the same! And again, I really can't say in just words alone how utterly grateful I am to all of y'all for your support and for all of the wonderfully kind words that you leave in your shouts and comments as well! I never could have imagined anything like this happening when I had first made my FA account and started sharing commissioned artworks here about a year ago, that people would actually see and enjoy these short little stories that I write just as a small hobby and follow along with the adventures of all these different characters that I make too. Still, the fact that there's already 300+ of you guys watching is very unreal to me... Of course the numbers and being popular is absolutely not at all what this is about, I could really care less about any of that as I really just wanted a place to be able to share what I like. And it really means a lot to hear that a number of people enjoy it too... There will definitely be plenty more to come, and I hope that all of the stories I'd like to share with you all will be able to see the light of day, eventually at least x3
Also, as a couple of fun facts for a bit of context to some parts of this little story, it is actually a notable sign out in nature whenever there's a large animal or predator in the area that all of the other noises made by smaller wildlife nearby will go completely silent so that they don't draw its attention to themselves. So if you're ever out in the forest and all of a sudden it goes dead quiet out of the blue, definitely take caution as it is most likely a sign that there's something big and dangerous nearby. And crows are actually not nocturnal animals, contrary to popular belief, they are diurnal and are typically most active during the daytime. The only occasions that you'd ever hear them cawing during the night is either if there's something threatening near their nest or if their babies are calling, and it's said that hearing the sound of a crow when it's dark out is considered to be a sign of incoming death or danger.
That all aside, though, I absolutely just adore everything about this art piece featuring my lovely fantasy warrior, Sir Gault Tremont the Night Hunter, and how it shows a bit more of him while he's out in the field! I might have mentioned it previously, or maybe not, but it's certainly not so often that I get more traditional media type commissions done just in general, though they absolutely deserve much more appreciation! And there really is just something so special about what this particular artist does with their traditional artworks and being able to capture so much with using a more limited palette... I just love the look and the feel of the movement in this piece, the way Gault is crouched down atop the rock, how focused and attentive his eyes look as he's taking in the details of his surroundings, the way his long mane, tail, and cape flow behind him, how he holds his weapon in a way so that he can shift it into a more combat-ready position whenever needed is just so spot on and very well done! And as always, the way this artist makes good use of differing tonal values in tandem with harder, blockier cel-shading to show where the light and shadows would fall, god it's just so fantastic! And I feel like the use of values to really highlight and differentiate all of the textures present here too is just great, like it's quite easy to be able to make out the look of the leather and metal that constitutes most of Gault's armor suit, to see the smoothness of the hard, carapace-like material around his arms and hands, the roughness of the rock he's perched on, and how light and wispy-looking his hair is. Everything just pops out so nicely, and to be able to see this kind of effect done so well with typical traditional media like pencils, pen, and markers is absolutely remarkable and so satisfying to look at, especially when taking into account how much more limited this kind of art is in general compared to drawing on a digital canvas. But as always, the artist really did an incredible job with executing the idea and with making such an awesome and gorgeous art piece, that much is for certain~ <3333
This amazing, lovely, and super magnificent art piece was courtesy of the equally as amazing, lovely, wonderful, and supremely talented artist AndyD!! Definitely took me quite some time to finally post this one up after it's been sitting in my files for at least a few months, but again, thank you so very much as always for both the beautifully done art piece and for the opportunity to be able to work with you once again on something like this! It's really such an honor and an absolute pleasure to have you draw my characters for this and to breathe life into these scenes and ideas, and your traditional media illustrations are really unlike any other that I've seen during my time thus far here on FA. Honestly, your works definitely deserve to be featured in some kind of published material, like as splash art for some kind of RPG game or in fantasy novels because they would fit in so well for those! But regardless, you're truly a one of a kind type of artist, and though I know things haven't been the best due to ongoing world events and such, I do hope that you'll continue to create and share your incredible craft! I hope we can work together again sometime soon, definitely keep up the amazing work, and I will certainly be wishing you the best for all that you hope to achieve in your artistic career and in life as well~ <3333
And hey, if you aren't already doing so, then please do consider hopping over to AndyD's page, giving him a watch, leaving a fave or two on the original post of this piece in his gallery and on any of his other artworks there that catch your eye, and if you like what all he has to offer then definitely consider shooting a commission his way as well! I don't know for sure if he is still offering his usual commission types like his watercolor and gouache works, you can most certainly inquire further with him if you'd like to know more or ask for something like that from him. He was previously in a very difficult situation as he is a refugee who fled from his home country and is currently living internationally, and while I don't know exactly how things have been since then as this was many months ago (he hasn't given any exact updates on it), I'm sure that he would really appreciate any and all support just to be able to live relatively comfortably and provide for himself on a daily basis. Artists need to eat and sleep just like the rest of us, after all! If you're interested in ordering something from AndyD, though, he is currently offering both traditional sketch type 'YCH' pieces for practically almost dirt cheap prices ($5 for portrait, $12 for full body, plus small additional fees for any extra bits like backgrounds, complex props, etc.) as well as pixel-type commissions that are also very nice and quite finely detailed as well! Regardless of whatever it is that you're interested in, you can surely bet that you'll be getting some super lovely art no matter the price! And even if you're not particularly looking to get any art for yourself or can't afford to order anything, I still highly implore and encourage you all to at least give this fantastic artist the attention and support he deserves by watching him as well as faving and sharing his stuff around with others!
Links to the info and prices for AndyD's current ongoing 'YCH' traditional sketch commissions as well as his pixel commissions will be provided below, as per usual! Please do consider having a look and grabbing a slot if you'd be interested in ordering something from him, and if you're not particularly interested in commissioning then at least faving and sharing his artworks around with your friends, followers, acquaintances, and anyone else who might like to check it out themselves would be greatly appreciated!

A welcome insight into Tremont's hunting life, especially the portrayal of how he was summoned. The original character introduction mainly focused on Sir Gault being an unforgiving stalker and nemesis to the wrongdoers, but that could have been interpreted as a noble settling personal grudges, but this story conveyed very clearly that the dark knight is, above all, a defender of those in peril, especially when the normal protections don't apply to them, or the villain is uncannily powerful.
He has become a lot more respectable in my eyes after reading this fragment of his dangerous life. It also reminded me of the situation described in "Clash Against the Horde!", with the adventurers protecting the innocents and eliminating powerful otherworldly threats.
A fantastic description of the bustling wilderness surrounding the wolf as he's waiting in ambush, and a chillingly conveyed muting of that merry din at the approach of the Night Hunter's quarry.
I also loved the touch of making Tempest's Edge hum with magical potency -- fantasy writers so often neglect to make powerful magical weapons and artifacts behave in an appropriately magical way.

Hey ;)
Your story is again so beautiful and really well fitting to the image. And the image itself is stunning!
I just saw you celebrated your big round birthday ^^
Two weeks ago, but well-... Better now than never:
Happy birthday! I hope the first weeks were amazing and you haven't had much stress in your real life. ;)
I just finished my big request project. It took way longer than I expected but I am now finally on my way to draw some private projects. And well... If your offer is still standing I would love to pm you.
I currently have not much time so the project will start very slowly but maybe it is okay for you since you also have so many things to do ^^°

Hey hey Moonfin!! Ah, thank you so very much for the kind words! I'm very glad to hear that you enjoyed this art piece and the little story as well! AndyD always does such amazing work, his traditional style illustrations are simply fantastic and so beautiful and he's simply great to work with! Would definitely recommend him, for sure~ I'm still trying to get back into the feel of writing more longer form stories like this one, though finding the time and the energy for it has... admittedly not been so easy. But if anything, I'm at least happy to hear that I haven't gotten so rusty yet with my stories and such, haha~ And I'm glad to hear that you and others still enjoy them too, even though it'll definitely take a lot more time in between these sorts of longer short stories... x3
Ahhhhh thank you so much again!! I really appreciate the birthday wishes, and it doesn't matter so much to me if it's late or not... It's the thought that counts the most, and I'm very pleased to receive such kind congratulations from you either way! It's very greatly appreciated~ Things have been quite busy for me as of lately with work and life stuff in general, so I apologize that it's taken me so long to get back to you on this, but it hasn't been super stressful at least so I certainly can't complain otherwise! 😊
Oh nice! Glad to hear that you were able to get things finished, I'm sure a change of pace and being able to draw some more stuff for yourself would be good! And yes! Absolutely I'd still be down for that story-writing collab that we'd mentioned wanting to do! Of course it still remains to discuss some things like a general idea of what we'd like, what characters would be involved, and such, though we can certainly do that over PMs. So you're more than welcome to drop me a Note whenever you have the time and it's most convenient for you! 💜💜💜
No worries!! I'm honestly quite busy too, so if it comes along quite slowly then that's no problem to me! We're both busy people with our own schedules and such, and of course I imagine that with the holidays coming up too there'll be a lot of other things going on in life that would take precedence. I completely understand, and of course I don't want to stress too much over strict deadlines and such so we can do it at our own pace and whenever we have the time. As long as you're fine with it, then it'd be all good with me too!
