In these cold, winter days, thoughts always seem to run back to remember the gentle embrace of summer warmth, and the caress of sun rays against the skin. As much as Laura liked the stillness of winter season and its beautiful snowy veil, the silence and darkness that followed often proved too much for her.
Laura lived for interacting with people, going out with her friends whenever her busy schedule allowed her and sharing stories of the days gone by while enjoying a refreshing drink, or her personal favorite, walking through a forest and taking in the blessings of Mother Nature’s gifts that graced her surroundings. Of course, such occasions were limited in number, and Laura knew that well, so she always gave her all to fit well with the environment, and wore her simplistic, but elegant red dress.
Much like the nature itself, she appreciated the simplicity of such designs, allowing her dress to complement her orange and white fur, while the sharp brown stripes on her shoulders, thighs and tail break the monotony. Her warm color palette suddenly shifting in tone as her light blue eyes drew attention from everyone who graced her company, seemingly being in danger to lose themselves in their icy depths, only to be surprised by the warmth hidden behind its surface as they would be bathed in warmth as the conversation developed. Her long, silky brown hair fell elegantly from her shoulders, accompanied by curious ears, always at ready to hear woes of her friends, and her lips standing ready to offer a word of advice and compassion.
Laura wrapped her arms around her chest as she sat on the window and gazed outside, watching as snowflakes fell from the sky, some more graciously than others, and finally meeting each other on the ground, growing the layer of snow ever so thicker. A thought passed through her mind, as snowflakes, ever so different from each other upon their formation, all met each other at the ground. It reminded her of her friends, as her mind drifted again to the sunny shores of summer. She has met many friends in the past few years, each one of them coming from a different place. Some lived a town away, while others were continents apart. Yet their love and appreciation for same interests bounded them together, and no matter from which nation, what belief they held, or what culture they cherished, all of them found their way to the same place and bonded together, in a same way as the snowflakes formed their white veil.
Laura pulled herself from the land of dreams and headed towards the kitchen, preparing herself a cup of coffee to stay away the approaching sleep’s embrace. As she stirred the dark drink, Laura imagined herself sitting in a cafe, stirring the same cup but this time surrounded by her friends, sharing a laugh as they enjoyed each other’s company, conversations between each other flowing like a river as the sun bathed their fur in its warmth. Yet it paled in comparison to the warmth coming from her heart, as it was always there for her friends, reflected in the dreams she know stirred herself away from, as she swung to hard with her spoon and splashed some of the coffee on the table.
With a soft sigh, Laura cleaned the mess and headed towards the living room and making herself comfortable on the sofa, holding her cup of coffee close to her chest, mimicking the feeling of closeness of her friends. She felt isolated, her expression slowly growing more sad, when suddenly the stillness of silence was broken by a ring of her phone. As she pulled it from her pocket, she saw a message from her friend, asking how she was doing.
A faint smile found its way to her lips, and she engaged the conversation. As small messages turned larger, so did the seconds turned into minutes, and minutes into hours. Who knew that such a small, seemingly insignificant message could bring her so much joy in this cold, winter afternoon, coming from someone who lived miles and miles away…
No matter how small of a snowflake, it has potential to be a part of something bigger. No matter how insignificant our actions may be, they have potential to make someone’s day beautiful.
In the silent, cold days of winter, be someone’s summer sun.
